When I sing this aria, and let me tell you, it's so much fun to sing, I always think of this performance. The best part is the very last line- the emphasis she puts on that... Such beautifully powerful music, what intense orchestration, shakes you to your core...
It's funny, I have heard people put this performance down, but I find it riveting. Her voice is strong, bright, and angular...and there is a long tradition of casting Electra with a Wagnerian singer. She gets tried towards the end, and what soprano doesn't?
Nothing short of amazing. She even keeps her arms and fingers stiff in "rigormortis" as her body is carried off. The woman thought of EVERY aspect of her characters in a way very few ever have.
The most impressive Elettra on stage I have seen (on video, of course, because I couldn't - unfortunately - have heard her live). Behrens was certainly one of the great legends of the Post War period, though she wasn't as reknown as she deserved with that amazing voice (though not the most powerful), animal stage presence and a powerful sense of femininity and sensitivity even in the most dramatic and tragic roles. She'll be remembered as a great diva in a very broad range of repertoires.
Yes, apparently she has died of an aneurism at 72. I did not know her work, but since Paul Potts, I have been trying to familiarize myself with more opera. I regret not having known about this lady until reports of her death. What an amazing voice to be lost!
Gorgeous interpretation. One of the most gracious sopranos I have ever had the pleasure to meet! What a delightful video! Thank you so much for posting :)
You can love or hate her singing here, but she NAILS the acting like no other! I have always liked this aria for its rage and dramatics. I can certainly forgive the minor vocal flaws in favor of her acting. Brava!
Behrens's performance here is indescribably more sophisticated than I ever imagined it would be. Perhaps one of the only Italian roles that suited her unique talent; I was really impressed!!
It was a great operatic MOMENT -- as someone once said of Obrastsova's Amneris, "It was like being in a taxi crash with Jackie O - tremendously exciting, and you wanted to tell everyone all about it, but not exactly pleasant." Behrens voice and the Italian language never belonged on the same stage together.
It was mine too, until the Strauss Elektra in 1994, the greatest ovation in the history of the Met. WHat a night that was. Why is that sensational performance not out on DVD yet?????
Fantastic. Such drama and stage presence.
Would have loved to see Ancient Greek costumes here though...

Sutherland like diction, extremely usual interpretation, yet very impressive and memorable.

aparte de la voz, que gran actuación, si en todas las óperas todos/as actuaran así, sería más sublime aún este género

I love her face. It is as expressive as her singing, resp. shouting/moaning.
