"Not in this world," says the man with the butterfly face. Didn't he just say that human will and action kicks all ass or something? Ah, JRPGs. You never cease to amaze me.
Nyarlathotep is essentially a construct of the nihilistic aspects of human psychology. The other persona games seem to touch on this as well, from my understanding. I mention Jung because the only documents and refrences that the name "Philemon" refers to are in Jung's writings. According to him, Philemon was his wise, teaching, 'spirit' guide', which seems to fit the role he plays in his game. As for the parallels with lovecraft, as a lovecraft fan, I think you can see how perhaps
Man, the Japanese voice actor really put more work into that last moment for Tatsuya than the english one did. At least the voice acting has gotten better with the years -_-
@LovecraftianEntity01 No problem I can elaborate. Carl Jung is a psychologist who was around the same time as Freud. They were both sort of notable figures that was getting into what was a completely new field at the time, which naturally involved in a lot of dubious and potentially unscientific theories being thrown around. Carl Jung believed that all humans were connected in what he referred to as a "collective unconcsious". In principle, basically what exists from all of the repressed and
unacknowledged parts of our minds. This game, though I didn't play through it, seems to touch heavilly on this. Nyarlathotep is essentially the manifestation of the negative emotions that people harbor within themselves. An unnaccepted yearning for closure, for death, for the finality of existence. Nyarlathotep believes that he is merely fulfilling humanity's true desires that they don't have the courage to fulfill themselves. This is why he says he is all of you humans.
@Zellig That's strange, i only received the second part of your comment. That was some speech! You remind me of Lovecraft's writing-style; but to be honest i didn't even watch the video until now, so i didn't really know what was being discussed. Now i kinda get it, i guess they used Nyarlathotep to represent a collective human psychological pattern; the self-destructive feelings i guess, in the same way that Lovecraft conceived him as an amalgamation of the will of the ultimate tenebrous gods.
The fact that Nyar is the final boss is kind of cool, even though it isn't the "real" Nyarlathotep. Nyar has no relation to the darkness in the human heart or whatever, he just likes to troll them.
I personally feel that Persona 2 handled folklore & mythology (& in this case Lovecraft mythos.) with much more consistency and accuracy than the newer Persona games did.
P2's Nyar makes much more sense on a thematic level than P3's Nyx, & P4's Izanami.
Izanami & Nyx were completely random.
You could basically write in any mythical being in place of those two and the plots for P3 & P4 would still read exactly the same.
Nyar kidnapped Tatsuyas hairdresser and forced him/her/it to do his hair! >:O
Also, is it only me or doesn't Maya look a bit like the Heroine in Shin Megami Tensei? Sure she has a bit longer face, but the rest of the features are practically the same ...
For some reason I felt this was a little better but then again, the whole "Well I guess I'l have fun playing as your fathers" Was actually kind of creepy.
Nyarlathotep had the best lines ever.

the horrific cosmic abominations in the universe are a projection of our fears and worst thoughts, or that we are a projection of theirs.

That's just the way Atlus chose to adapt Nyar into their story.
Besides you also got to fight Cthulhu in SMT IF, & Shoggoths as random encounters in P2.
They're manifested as avatars of anxiety in the Persona universe
Nyar's M.O. in P2 is to drive people to self destruction through insanity.
That's good enough for me.

Well, Philemon is a secret boss in the game, and he is very hard cause he has a move that heals him for how much damage he does to your party.
