@Catchafirefly hm.. not exaclty correct. the chances are not the same because only 1000 (dunno but lets say so) might visit the falls while 2.000.000 text and drive. so the percentage of would be 12/1000 and for the falls 5/1000. or anything like that. I'm pretty sure the people who text and drive are way more.
Eventually that rock ledge at the edge of the falls will erode and collapse and anyone in the pool is going to be swept over the falls. That will be really cool to see.
it's a pool. there is a wall preventing you from going over the side. simple physics. there is no risk, unless you intentionally stand up on the edge and jump off. calm down idiots
We all have to live and die, so the truth about life and death concerns and applies to us all. True or false? Search "TRUTH CONTEST" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the Truth. Let's get serious and honest about the truth of life.
If you would rather not be in the pool, but watch the falls plummet down into the Zambezi river from that side, during the dry season, you can find a dry rocky spot, lie on your tummy and watch the water plummet down from the smaller streams. There is more water towards the middle of the falls. I think by October it starts to rain again, usually, so September would be good if there are no freak rains. Watching the falls like that is one of the best memories of my 19 years in Africa.
I was there during the dry season but did not know about these pools then (it was drier even than in the clip). Some friends and I were guided by teenage boys who offered to lead us around and we were hopping over rocks with trickles and puddles of water in between - still it was scary (but oh so exhilarating!). It probably looks more daunting on this clip than what it really is, because ) the authorities would not allow it otherwise, and b) in other pictures I've even seen kids in it.
I wonder how the first person to discover this thought. If he just said, "Well, it might look safe... Fuck it," and then just jumped into a god damn waterfall. If there were any ladies there, you bet he got all of them.
First of all how can you actually believe anything that wiki says? its completely full of shit!! When I go home back to Zimbabwe, Im definitely going bunge jumping and swimming in devils pool! You only live once, so if not why not :)
@lindspiper Well that doesn't really make any sense does it? The ratio of deaths from people going outside is a lot lower than those who jump in Devils pool.
They probably pushed themselves to close to the edge. It's simple physics of buoyancy. Not enough water to lift you up and carry you over. But I'm sure they prob hung halfway over to show off and look, and ofcourse, their leg which they used as counter weight, was floating to but at some point like a scale they tipped more to one side and fell.. Really a shity way to die. But I hear people get a heart attack and all that stuff, but really they're dead so they can't tell you if true
@961kgb You should search more about the falls before saying such thing. In fact, it is known that only one person died and it was by trying to rescue an other person who slipped on a wet rock. So they used that single person to make these statistics, which should be considered as not true. Thank you.
I went to Devil's Pool in October 2007. It was hands-down one of the coolest things I did during my month in Africa. It's great to see videos like this showing what it's like. You just need to be a good swimmer and have a bit of guts. I would definitely do it again....
i did this 2 years ago, easily one if the sickest things i'v ever done , but swimming to the pool is way scarier than being in the pool itself coz you gotta swim through the current of the river right next to the edge of the falls, safer than it looks though, my little brother did it and he was 14
@zorilaz Are u trying to say that anyone who goes to Africa dies or what? Can u please elaborate why you say that "africa is the worst place on earth"? As a matter of interest what nationality are you? I hope your country is not one of those looking for "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq.
@TheWamambo This is a rather interesting video. It sparks a few thoughts about America and how many personal freedoms people have there and though Africa might have "bad governments", maybe there is a lot more freedom in those countries than in America. If that falls were on American soil, they would not allow anyone to swim there anytime.
See, this is what people have to remember; All of that fast water, and winds causes erosion. So after a while the rock that the people are using to protect them selves from falling, is going to give out. And falling to your death is one of the worst ways to go, because you know your going to die, but you cant do anything about it......
It would be funny if the black guy was just playing a nasty joke on the white guy and was tied down and the white guy went over the falls with the black laughing.
I went to Victoria Falls when I was 12 years old. My family was in Zambia for a vacation. People talk about how deadly and stupid this is. Clearly they are the stupid one's writeing about something they don't know. Theres a wall at the end of the falls that isn't man made and also it isn't a thin wall. As I remember it (Almost 20 years later) it is actually very thick and the current is hardly there.
Its a natural pool, if you watch the first 10 seconds of the clip, you can see the color difference in the water where the rock ledge is, the water flowing over the top of the ledge is about 5-10cm deep and fairly low current.
Ha ha, its not man made, ive done it, its a natural structure. The guy in the vid took our pics whilst we held each other over the edge by our feet, damn scary i can tell you.
It is completely real, I would know, Im the guy with the horrible tan-lines in the video :)
if you want to go and do this, you need to get a flight to Zambia (central Africa), and then get to a town called Livingstone. but you have to do it at around September to January when the Zambezi river is low.
And dont forget to go to your doctor before you goto africa! yellow fever, malaria etc ;) its not all fun and games on the dark continent! but totally worth it for those with adventurous spirit :) check out my cliffjump video!
Lindspiper, whatever that means you are just a disgrace to the forum. Which light continent do you come from? Why did u go to the falls in the first place if it was such a hazardous place. I was encouraging other people to be adventurous and travel outside of their comfort zones. But, you must be careful, Like going to your doctor, to avoid spreading disease.
@lindspiper@lindspiper??? So how much darkness did u see in Vic falls? Also remember that Wikipedia is not a credible academic source.
N-way, for the benefit of doubt, just know referring to Africa as a dark continent is not taken lightly by us Africans (whatever the interpretation) since i have been to all continents and none of them is any better. Its only typical fanatics who live in illusions that they are better off while in actual sense they aren't any better.
I understand your point, but I have never heard the term dark contintent used in a racial sense, If anything it illustrates the relatively poor education of the west about the rest of the world as little as century ago. to be quite honest, the darkness was one of the things I enjoyed most in Africa, especially in rural areas because there isnt as much street lighting or city glow, the nightime is so much darker, you can see the stars and really appreciate nature.
@lindspiper Ok now i get you and i appreciate that you were looking at the positive point of it. The term is mostly used to belittle Africans; thus the stereotype. Now have you been to Kenya? There is equally much fun like the Masai Mara, Mombasa and much more. I apologize for my earlier abusive remarks...
gettoking25 the current doesnt take thm over because the is a huge bit of rock stopping thm :) u can see one of the guys sitting oan the edge of it and itz pretty wide :) thtz y people jump in it because the rock is stopping them btw this rock will wear away in about 30000 years +
Like, a few times a year, the waters gets so low, that it's powerful enough to pull you ower the edge, plus what's great, is that there's a little 'hot tub' type crater in the falls..
Out of season it isnt even possible to get to Livingstone island :) the whole thing is covered in water, and the mist coming out of the gorge is so heavy its like torrential rain.
THAT IS NUCKING FUTS!!!!!!!

Texting while driving kills 6000 people a year, but people still do it, and think it's okay.
Victoria Falls claims 1 to 5 lives a year, yet people call you stupid, reckless, and "throwing your life away" for swimming there.

HeelsXOverXHead96 2 years ago
Like, a few times a year, the waters gets so low, that it's powerful enough to pull you ower the edge, plus what's great, is that there's a little 'hot tub' type crater in the falls..
MoyMcNinja 2 years ago
That sounds pretty tight. Have you been down there before?
RainMan34 2 years ago
I've never been there, I dont want to, 'cuz I will SHIT myself.
