Finally! I've been looking for this version. I had the PC version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and this was the music. I personally like this better than the "real" version.
@Adam060756 What have you got against Michael's original version of the song, when Sega did this Midi version of the song it just sounds horrible. And I wouldn't mind hearing this 16 bit version of yours.
@Adam060756 But in my opinion Michael and his sound team did prove one thing and that is, you don't need drums all the time make a good song. Too bad Michael didn't like it much though.
@Adam060756 what would launch base zone sound like without the HEY and the GO sounds and the mini boss theme with the COME ON sounds. Thats the only time I like the voice idea
I don't get why people think this doesn't "fit" Ice Cap. It still sounds like it belongs in a Winter Wonderland zone, but it's just more upbeat. Theo original Genesis track is an overall better piece, but I love hearing this one, too. :)
They had legal issues, because the originals sounded like MJ songs (as they were intended to) he PC version of things are WAY different from originals, but hey they still tried :/
Remember, back in 1997, two wave files could not play at the same time. Therefore, instead of using a CD soundtrack and thereby giving people the music to easily play in a CD player (a la Interstate 76) and because you couldn't easily put it on a loop, they used MIDI. MIDI follows a score, and therefore you can't have vocals, and so the music had to be changed. Scandal or no scandal.
TheClarinetThief is right. We shouldn't bash BOTH versions of the Sonic 3 soundtrack. The only reason why the original tracks were replaced in the S3&K Collection for Carnival Night, IceCap, Launch Base, the Sonic 3 Credits, and a few other themes is because of the Michael Jackson scandals that broke out. They're both great, and I could care less if M.J. made the Genesis music, because it is great music. So to the Sonic Fanboys, QUIT WHINING ABOUT WHICH MUSIC IS BETTER!!! Is that so hard to ask?
True dat. But who cares if they had voice samples, it still was great. And the whole Sonic music debate started since Sonic CD, which pisses me off. They're both great, and I wish people would just STOP ARGUING about music. Personally, I enjoy the Genesis music more, but the PC version has my favorite track, Launch Base Zone Act 1.
Ugh, quit bashing the PC music! I bet if this music was in the Genesis and the other music on the PC, I bet you would just bash the PC music because it's "different."
I like them both, but this is more nostalgiac because I grew up with the PC version. -_-
I am sure I am gonna get a lot of thumbs down from people, but at least look it up! This version IS the ORIGINAL JAPANESE version. The other version is NOT the original; the reason why Genesis had it was that it wasn't good enough to play the sounds in the music.
Please don't start getting pissed off, this is true- LOOK IT UP!!!
When I first heard the Genesis version, it made me move my hips and it still makes me move me hips. When I first heard the PC version it made me cringe, and it still makes me cringe.
Let's get this straight, the ORIGINAL (good) Ice Cap tune had too many similarities with a Michael Jackson (long controversial story) song, so it was removed and replaced with this song.
No, it really isn't. The PC version was released in 1997 while this was released in 1993 - 94. This music was created for the PC (in 97) when they found that they could not process some of the music from the ---original--- game onto PC and so made new tunes such as this one.
@greengreen31 Actually in the US the PC version was released in late 1996. If you have the Sonic and Knuckles collection on your computer check the help file.
@greengreen31 Well, this tune was specificaly made for the PC version, however, it's more of a remix. Listen to Crystal Egg Zone from S2 on the Game Gear and you'll see what I mean.
OK, well, technically it's the music that plays during Ice Cap Zone. But it's just not good. It doesn't capture the atmosphere that the Megadrive version does, it's completely different. All of the original Megadrive tunes are far better than the PC version's.
The original is much better, but this one isn't that bad! And I already know why they had to replace the original song, one it sounded like Michael Jackson's "Who Is It?" and at the time the sound cards in PC's couldn't properly play the right MIDI and WAV sounds they used for the original tune, so they had to replace it with an original piece.
Most of the tracks are the same barring new instruments though, I think there was some other reason for changing the tunes completely like they did with Ice Cap and Launch Base zone.
The ones on the Megadrive are NOT the original ones. This is the original Japanese version for this level, as are all the other tunes you reffered to.
I remember playing through the PC version, because I didn't have a Genesis, to find this song instead of the original Ice Cap music I loved. I was disappointed, and I actually called the manufacturer or whatever to ask what the deal was. I don't think I got a decent answer, but looking back, I guess this song is alright. I like both versions.
The answer has to do with issues with Michael Jackson. He worked on Sonic 3's music, but he was dropped from the project cause of molestation allegations. So they changed some of the music in other ports of the game.
Wrong. They changed the music because MIDI can't handle the the voice samples such as the "go" in Launch Base and other various voice sounds in Ice Cap and Carnival Night. There is no legitimate proof Michael Jackson had anything to do with Sonic 3, and I'm inclined to believe he didn't.
Just because a couple of songs are similar in style doesn't mean it was composed by the same person at all. That kind of music was extremely popular in the early 90s and Michael Jackson became a bit of a bandwagoner anyway. Also, Mr. credible-sounding-sophisticated-accent in the video doesn't know jack **** about music theory. He totally spat out BS about the chord progressions (aka lying).
Another thing - I am an admin at Sonic Fangames HQ, and we held an interview with Howard Drossin, one of the actual music composers listed in the credits. He said he has never heard of Michael Jackson having any involvement with Sonic 3.
Ice Cap and Who Is It really aren't that similar. Just because two songs share somewhat similar chord progressions does NOT mean they are composed by the same musician. There are millions and millions of songs that share similar chord progressions but were made by entirely different artists. If you don't know that, then you must not understand how music works.
Also, the "Jam" sound is just an orchestral hit. I've heard it in countless 90s pop songs. It does NOT belong to Michael Jackson.
If you're not talking about chord progressions, then how are Ice Cap and Who Is It similar? And if you've never heard an orchestral hit in music, especially 90s pop music, then you must really know nothing about music. Just check out the bucketheads.
Looking for similarities between video game songs and Michael Jackson songs is the complete wrong way to go about things anyway. Songs can be completely stylistically similar and be composed by different artists. I'm done with this conversation.
When did I say anything about Ice Cap and Who Is It? Again with the straw man arguments I see.
Which Bucketheads song has an orchestral hit with the word Jam in it? If you can't name one I'll just assume you made it up, but we both know you did anyway.
Yes, please be done with this conversation. You've only been putting words in my mouth and simply saying "you must really know nothing" as your 'proof'.
Michael Jackson's personal sound production team (Brad Buxer, Doug Grisby III, Bobby Brooks, Darryl Ross and Geoff Grace) are also composers for sonic 3's team. is that a coincidence too?
after the controversy of jackson's sound team, drossin and Jun Senoue finished the remaining tracks. so that may be why he never heard of it.
I actually heard both, and I lean a little more towards this version, because it has more variation in it. Just my opinion, but yeah. I also think I might like this one better because I heard this one before I heard the other one.

Wrong. They changed the music because MIDI can't handle the the voice samples such as the "go" in Launch Base and other various voice sounds in Ice Cap and Carnival Night. There is no legitimate proof Michael Jackson had anything to do with Sonic 3, and I'm inclined to believe he didn't.

Voice sounds in Ice Cap? When?
And no, they would have just left the voice sounds out when re-writing the song to MIDI instead of creating an entirely new song.
