  • I understand your point about visual phonic when we can use fingerspelling to teach phonic, but as for cued speech, do you think it's better to reading English books aloud? Most parents/teacher/interpreters have been using SEE to teach English order (its quicker than fingerspelling, I suppose) I felt since English is a spoken language, why not use cued speech, hopefully the students don't have to use hearing aids to assist cued speech and don't have to use it all the time to grasp it.

  • I would be interested in your comments about "visual phonics" and it's ability to help deaf children learn to read.

  • @art435 Visual Phonics.... in my opinion, totally unnecessary. Just another artificial thing for kids to learn. What's wrong with using fingerspelling to stress the sound you want to teach?

Also, it looks too much like Cued Speech to me. I know the authors say it is not for communication but just to help teach reading (and maybe speech), but past history has shown that these artificial, Hearing-based systems tend to get abused and made into yet another "communication system" for Deaf kids.

  • The main question here is, we need to find those hearing parents and discuss the success of BiBi Education for their Deaf children, how and where? I am one of anecdotal evidences as I first acquired ASL at age 5. My language development became delayed but caught up. Graduated from HS at age 19. So late, how embarrassing. Wish oralism didn't enter my 0-5 life. Great vid!

  • so my Deaf child mainstreamed in a public school with no other students using ASL, she has an interpreter, but that only gets her half of the bi/bi formula... Is there a course on Deaf culture that I can use to help round out her education?

  • This finding also applies to deaf education everywhere...

My main frustration is that educational establishments throughout the world are adverse to apply research to specific groupings within the Bi-Bi school or program - it is not seen as politically correct (even by Bi-Bi advocates within those schools) to do this.

I wonder what the results would be if we have a marker applied to deaf kids entering those schools fluent in ASL (or BSL etc), those semi or non fluent - could be frightening!!

  • It also applies to me. I had my language skill was delayed. I had to work so hard to catch up in years and years because I did not have a language in early in my childhood and I used SEE in early childhood. I learned actual ASL when I was 10. Now i can read books like everyone else do even college books, but my writing is still need some improvement. That all I want to share in here to prove that your vlog is right.
