Some of the scenes were highly offensive to Indians like you mentioned. However you need to look at the bigger picture. No Indian movie has made into the mainstream consciousness of the West thus far except this movie.

While it regurgitates some racist western stereotypes about India, it also shows a more human side as well. Slumdog is the thin edge of the wedge of Indian culture/actors becoming more accepted in the mainstream media. On balance this move does more good than harm in my view.
