@imadrawer Through a lot of practice and experimentation. You can do it. It is really difficult to tell you exactly what to do when we cannot see what your problem is.
What is the best way to practice the habit of getting my footwork right for my left hand layups. I can make them, but I never get the right foot down. I have the habit of jumping off my left from my right hand layups.
@ShotScience if im driving towards the basket and i unintentionally step on (the foot of the) defender guarding me, is it a foul? my brother claims it is, but i dont. what do you say
@FranTicGamingX Just stepping on the other players foot inadvertently is not a foul. There is a lot of contact in games that is not considered a foul and it is usually referred to as "Inadvertent contact" meaning it is not contributing to one player gaining an advantage over the other.
@FranTicGamingX I have the same problem and Ive never started practicing left hand layups until now...Im 20 lol so its hard to get the footwork down. I can do left handers off my left leg but my right leg refuses to be the lauch leg.
@shotscience Hello! I've been watching all your videos recently and its really been helping me out! I suscribed to you guys and liked all your videos and I really wanted to say thankyou :)
But I also have a question. When I do an underhand layup, I can never get the ball high enough, unless I rotate my fingers and put a spin on it. But then it isn't as accurate. Do you know what I can do or what i might be doing wrong to start getting the ball higher and in?
Hey shotscience, me again, I don't quite understand how to come underhanded, on layups i pt the ball in the hoop pretty well, but even when i hit the sweetspot it comes off the glass too hard
Would it be okay if my wrist is on the side of the ball going up?
Shot science, do you recommend the under hand layup for a guard because my coach always said to do the overhand because its harder to block and when your driving in you would always prefer to score on rather than get blocked by the big guys.
@nathandouglas101 We do not agree with your coach! The underhand layup is much softer shot and easier to control. The idea that the Bigs can block this shot easier than the overhand is not real.
Hey dre does experience matter in basketball, See its that my JV team just finished the season i had a lot of assist but average like 2 or 0 points a game. Its my first time i play organized. I am a freshman, DO YOU BELIEVE EXPERIENCE plays a big part in bball
@bletma281 Experience is a big help in developing your game, but there are other aspects as well. Practicing at "game speed," working on your mechanics, having the mentality of "SCORE!" Check out our videos, especially the "12 Days of Tipmas" to get started.
Dear shot science when i go up for a lay up or i drive in i try to get past the bigger kids but there isnt enough room for dribble attack and i always end up throwing the ball somewhere random what can i do to get to the paint?
@basketballislife77 bro theres a whole variety of moves but my signiture is a hop step pump fake either make the shot or get fouled but practice your freethrow and you will be averaging at least 13 points a game or you can get into that gym and get stronger like lebron and tyreke evans and plow your way into the paint like a tank and also add speed and quickness by doing wind sprints goodluck bro!!!
@LOCOFASHOBRA We do not endorse this particular approach to playing the game. Develop your skills and learn to play the game and you will be successful.
@basketballislife77 Playing this game is all about developing your skills and learning how to react in a lot of situations. It takes time to do this. Experience is the greatest teacher and with it your game will get better and better.
@basketballislife77 Hey 77, go to our video "Finishes at the Rim" for a number of ways to aatach the Bigs at the Basket and score over and around them.
i have a question how do you add spin to the layup and also many nba players when they lay it up release it pretty low and spin it up to not get blocked as easily by the look on the way you guys are doing it it looks like youll get blocked easily
@ShotScience oo i c and on the underhand layup what do you suggest your arms to be like more horizontal or vertical and should you jump vertically or horizontally and lay it off glass? rondo seems to have more of a horizontal jump on his layups and never gets blocked
@TeamCommit Really, this is a personal thing that you should develop to fit your style. We feel that the vertical extension on execution of the layup is important, but make sure to hit the near upper corner of the target box for best results.
@drfreethrough On a left-handed layup, you want to jump off of your right foot. Doing it off the other foot is going to be awkward and you will generate much less upward power.
@drfreethrough Well if you do the shot will be very un-coordinated and more difficult to make the finish. Make sure you learn to use your right foot on the take-off for your left hand layups.
@PeaceRocker5 There is nothing wrong with shooting Set Shots instead of Jump Shots if you are open. The idea is to score, no matter how you get it done!
*Sorry for bad lng* I would love to know how to make a layup using not shooting arm(can use It normally for dribble only), mean any drills to increase its ability to do at least easy layup, or the shoot also.
@Beazelundefined if youre talking about using your left hand for lay ups its all ust pur practice, just keep up practicing and itll become natural eventually.
@GMoney3xMore No! It has to do with softening the ball as it goes to the rim or backboard. The run-up speed is not transfered to the back of the ball when when you use the underhand, whereas it is transfered to the ball with the overhand layup. That's why the ball is so active on break-away layups.

@TheAl3xcastillo How do you miss it? Does the ball hit the backboard and come off hard? If it does you probably need to use the underhand layup where you can soften the shot after running so hard toward the basket.
@TheAl3xcastillo The underhand is good! Place the ball on the upper near corner of the target box. (The square painted on the backboard) This should help.
Hey coach, when I go for a under hand layup, the ball doesnt seem to "roll" of my fingers. Its more of a under hand shot lay up. How do I make it roll off

ive been having trouble with finger rolls.... my coach said just to stick with shooting it off the backboard while you drive but its alot more natural to go with the finger roll. Any tips on how to work on the finger roll?
@m3v2p If you are coming straight down the lane be sure to "Take a side" to finish off the glass. A shot right over the front rim is a tough shot to finish because it takes so much touch.

@67beet We think you are asking about the raising of the knee'leg during the shot. It has two reasons. It allows for a bit of extra elevation and rhytmn on the shot.
@BazhoFromTheHood How old do you think I am!? Be careful ;-) Thanks so much for the wonderful comment on our videos. We work really hard to make them. New video is coming out within the next day or so. We started using a new editing software and it took a while to get used to it.
My coach says that we should ALWAYS shoot "palm up" (wrist cocked back, not underhand) on layups. However, I find that I make more layins when I shoot underhand. Is always shooting "palm up" really a good method?
Hey there, im having trouble with my pickup after a dribble. I always step with my right foot first and launch with my left regardless of which hand im trying to use or which side of the basket im on. How can i correct this?
@wtbwontons Use the information found in this and our other Layup videos. You can make the change if you spend the time. Too often we don't want to spend the time to make changes that will really help our game become more solid. Get going on it today.
Great Video, but I have a lot of trouble doing under hand lay-ups. I can do overhand fine, but the inertia of running often messes it up. I feel like i don't have enough vertical for the under hand. Is this the problem, or is vertical not important? thanks
@sk8t3rkyd Get busy working on those layups!! All skills are easy to develop if you just get yourself going. This video should offer some good help to get it done. Let's go!!!!!
Great video. I need to work on taking those 2 steps. Funny though, how I'm right handed but my left hand layups are better than my right .___. It's always that last step I take before I pick the ball up ! Throws the whole right-hand, right-leg thing off. (Always picking the ball up after my right step, not left. So my two steps for the right hand would be left-right instead of right-left)
I need help. I think I am a pretty good basketball player but when Im on a fast break and someone is chasing me down I usually trick the lay up. I either get a rim stuff or a straight off the backboard. I've noticed that I am very high up when I go for the lay up. Please tell me what I can do to avoid the rim stuffs or the backboard misses. I've lost games because of this.
@superflyhify Well, we suggest that you do two things. First shoot all of these hard breakaway layups "UNDERHAND" INSTEAD OF OVER HAND. THIS TAKES A LOT OF THE RUN-UP SPEED OFF THE BALL. Secondly, check out our video"FINISHES AT THE RIM." These videos should help with your problems.
thank you very much I used to be a bench warmer but I started watching your videos and training a lot and now the starting sg it took me one year but it is worth it thankss
@IPr0D3Z1R3 This please us so much! We are happy that we can offer you and other players videos to help you develop your game. Keep working on them and please, "Spread the Word."
@ZomegYdnas You can follow through, BUT IT MUST BE SOFTLY, so that the ball is not too live and kicks out of the basket. The follow through on your layups needs to be soft.
@venomviper11 Great question! We have no answer for you here. We DO COACH our guys on how to finish these breaks, because we have seen them missed so often.
Hey coach, I wantedw to know how to not get blocked from behind doing a lay up. Like if I beat my man off the dribble and he comes behind and swats me how to I counter that? And for any lay up in general? Thanks
@ShotScience Hey Coach I really need you help, When we are in Scrimmage I'm the only one who scores in Our team, But when it Comes to the actual game I'm So Nervous and have a "LOT" of turn overs and can't do the proper dribbling and sometimes I'm Shaking and my teammates said that when it Comes to the actual game I need to become hard, Because I look soft, I dribble soft catch soft and other. Please help me, THANKS! And my Coach said that I really need to Improve my Left hand & Dribbling skills

Hey coach I got a question what's the purpose of sticking your leg up when you go in for a layup?
67beet 3 months ago
@67beet We think you are asking about the raising of the knee'leg during the shot. It has two reasons. It allows for a bit of extra elevation and rhytmn on the shot.
ShotScience 3 months ago
@ShotScience Oh ok thanks. I've been wondering why I'm told to do that when I go in for a layup and now i know. :D

BazhoFromTheHood 3 months ago
@BazhoFromTheHood How old do you think I am!? Be careful ;-) Thanks so much for the wonderful comment on our videos. We work really hard to make them. New video is coming out within the next day or so. We started using a new editing software and it took a while to get used to it.

@BazhoFromTheHood I'm just kid! Thanks for your comment on our videos. We appreciate it very much. Next video is almost ready to post.

My coach says that we should ALWAYS shoot "palm up" (wrist cocked back, not underhand) on layups. However, I find that I make more layins when I shoot underhand. Is always shooting "palm up" really a good method?
SlenderWaffle 3 months ago
@SlenderWaffle Well, shooting underhand is "Palm Up." We don't feel that you need to cock the wrist way back. Continue to shoot underhand.

Question-the underhand layup is a finger-roll, correct?

@Wellihavebrownies Yes. That's how the ball is delivered.

Hey there, im having trouble with my pickup after a dribble. I always step with my right foot first and launch with my left regardless of which hand im trying to use or which side of the basket im on. How can i correct this?
wtbwontons 3 months ago in playlist How to Shoot a Basketball (Shooting Tips and Mechanics) 5
@wtbwontons Use the information found in this and our other Layup videos. You can make the change if you spend the time. Too often we don't want to spend the time to make changes that will really help our game become more solid. Get going on it today.

ShotScience 3 months ago
Great Video, but I have a lot of trouble doing under hand lay-ups. I can do overhand fine, but the inertia of running often messes it up. I feel like i don't have enough vertical for the under hand. Is this the problem, or is vertical not important? thanks
FrancoBros 3 months ago
@FrancoBros The vertical is no more important than if you were shooting over-hand.
ShotScience 3 months ago
@sk8t3rkyd Get busy working on those layups!! All skills are easy to develop if you just get yourself going. This video should offer some good help to get it done. Let's go!!!!!

Great video. I need to work on taking those 2 steps. Funny though, how I'm right handed but my left hand layups are better than my right .___. It's always that last step I take before I pick the ball up ! Throws the whole right-hand, right-leg thing off. (Always picking the ball up after my right step, not left. So my two steps for the right hand would be left-right instead of right-left)
diana15000000 4 months ago
@diana15000000 Check out our video "Lay-in Run-up drill" This will certainly help you along with continuing to practice.
ShotScience 4 months ago
I need help. I think I am a pretty good basketball player but when Im on a fast break and someone is chasing me down I usually trick the lay up. I either get a rim stuff or a straight off the backboard. I've noticed that I am very high up when I go for the lay up. Please tell me what I can do to avoid the rim stuffs or the backboard misses. I've lost games because of this.
superflyhify 4 months ago
@superflyhify Well, we suggest that you do two things. First shoot all of these hard breakaway layups "UNDERHAND" INSTEAD OF OVER HAND. THIS TAKES A LOT OF THE RUN-UP SPEED OFF THE BALL. Secondly, check out our video"FINISHES AT THE RIM." These videos should help with your problems.

thank you very much I used to be a bench warmer but I started watching your videos and training a lot and now the starting sg it took me one year but it is worth it thankss

@TheWewz123 Three pointers are shot the same as the shorter shots. If you check out our shooting videos it is all laid out there for you.
ShotScience 4 months ago
..
TheWewz123 4 months ago
@ZomegYdnas You can follow through, BUT IT MUST BE SOFTLY, so that the ball is not too live and kicks out of the basket. The follow through on your layups needs to be soft.
ShotScience 4 months ago
@ZomegYdnas Your layup strategy is good. No this will not "mess up" your regular shooting stroke.

Hey coach, I wantedw to know how to not get blocked from behind doing a lay up. Like if I beat my man off the dribble and he comes behind and swats me how to I counter that? And for any lay up in general? Thanks
onemogain23 4 months ago
@onemogain23 If you know they are there do not use a conventional layup. Use an inside hand, scoop or jump stop up-fake and finish. Be creative.
