@TheQxY There are touch sensitive rollers on the back where the octave key normally is for left hand thumb, next to a long slim metal plate. touching one of the rollers decides the octave, sliding down the rollers whilst touching the metal plate pitch bends down the octaves
He's absolutely also using a loopstation. I'm looking for a good sax emulation. Are the patchman patches good? Or should I go the VST way? I'm thinking about getting the sample modeling Sax Brothers VST, but wanted to hear if anybody has had good experience with the three saxes.
I got my EWI about a year ago to help fill some voids in my band. I use it in conjunction with a Roland Sonic Cell (all with patchman patches on both the Sonic Cell and EWI 4000s) I've been playing sax for 30 years and the rollers took a little getting use to. I was told by others it would take about 3 months to get comfortable with it. They were right.
After hearing Jeff, I had to get a loop station. It took a few hours to figure out but I'm coming close to reproducing his exact solo :-)
Can someone tell me whether the EWI 4000s is meant 2 play through BOTH speakers. I am only able 2 play it through 1 speaker!!! I am using a brand new pair of Behringer MS 40 speakers. It doesn't matter how i try 2 route the cables i still only get sound through 1 speaker. EVERYTHING else such as internet, music mp3's + keyboard ALL work in stereo except the EWI 4000S!!! VERY FRUSTRATED not knowing what the problem is. APPRECIATE any help EWI 4000S users/owners can give me...THANKS...
@analogWeapon Jeff Kashiwa uses the patchman music EWI patches; the "delay" is simply one of their patches (#40). Then of course he uses a loop station for the latter part of the video
@xenadon $700 or so. Having one myself, I'd recommend getting one from Patchman Music, along with the soundbank from the same place. The factory sounds aren't great.
can this be played with earphones that only you can hear it, or put volume down, so it can be practised at evening in apartments, without disturbing neigbours?
i would really want to play saxophone alto or tenor (dont know diference), but i would like to learn something before going practise realone with other people.
I live in an apartment, too, and always finish practising by 9pm. I talked to my neighbours, told them what I was going to do, offered to let them let me know what time was best, but didn't offer not to do it. They appreciated being consulted, and no one complains. People have pianos and other instruments in apartments a lot. I recommend talking to your neighbours.
@equesfuscus its impossible to play saxophone or piano in Finnish apartments, no mater what time it is, i cant even play guitar hero drums with silenced sticks after 22,00, i did and got warning. and we even have very thick concrete walls.
@equesfuscus must be cultural, cause i hear that from all over the country.
well i have space in my parent garage, where i play drums, but it takes time to go there, so i go only 2 times a week to play drums, maybe before drumming i could practise saxophone, drums i can play like 3-4 hours, i dont know how much i would be able to practise with sax, must be hard at the beginning?, so what you think is it worth it if i can only practise twice a week, without teaching.
I think it's worth it. You can work on your tone and some scales, just to get the basics going. If you love it, then do it. It won't be easy or great at first, but if you work at it, then you'll be better able to really learn once you get a different place to practice.
Surely, people in Finland like playing music, so where do people generally go to practise?
@equesfuscus there are lot of places to learn wich i dont know :) band rehersal apartments, music schools, normal schools, im not sure, mainly in music schools, anyway you always haveto go somewhere else to train.
saxophone what i was looking was 655 euros, tenor, very nice looking, golden.
i actually might buy it, i never even played flute before :D but usually when im interested on something i train hard, im not that kind of, that got some "face" and then i forget it after 3 play times.
@JanneFlinck1981 The only difference is the size and the range of the instrument. Well, they do have slightly different sounds but that is due to the range they play in.
i like this instrument....i play a traditiona germanl honner recorder, how would the finger patterns of the honner match up with this instrument???...any idea????.....mahalo and aloha, keep the music alive....forest
you can't i think. the internal synth is analog and has a set of sounds you can't change. to use different sounds people use an external synth connected by a midi cable
Must to have a midi interface. Conect your ewi midi in + midi out to midi interface and interface to your pc. Instal VIZEX program from the ewi cd. Also you can buy Akai ewi 4000s soundbank from patchman music.
If you're asking how to change/switch from sound to sound, you have to hold the little screw above where your right thumb goes (the bend plate), then without touching any keys toggle the hold or octave buttons. The display should read from 00-99 indicating different sounds. As far as changing those sounds, thats a whole other story.
I am not interesting about drums i like the sound of ewi. I think he use or a midi interface and he changed the sounds or a Patchman Music sounds. Thank you.
I'm guessing the first piece he played was an original composition, maybe? if not, anyone know the title?
also, i still cant figure out how to get his looping effects to happen on the fly. im working on a patch that will do it, but until then, i'll just watch in awe.
ewi usb is only a midi controller, no tone generator at all. so you need a midi box or a pc running midi sampler software it comes with (or any midi sampler)
Yep, if you plan to start playing on stage and studio, the 4000s is worth every penny. It may be tough to get use to octave rollers and how precise the keys are, that's basically the only real learning curve if you play wind instruments as well. :-)
Do you know if Jeff was doing this all with the onboard syth module of the 4000s, or is he using a looper? I just recently got my own EWI and want to try of some stuff like this, but wondering if I can do with with my current capabilities . . . .
He could be using a looping pedal, but he would have to be doing mad foot work to get that first piece to sound correct.
What I think he is doing for his first duet, (someone correct me if I'm wrong,) is using Patchman Music's "Looper" voice from their EWI4000s Soundbank Volume 1. That particular voice resembles this exact synth sound, and everything played is reverberated heavily, exactly one second later, as in the first piece played here; this creates a nice duet with ones own playing.
i think he's using the onboard tone generator... look at the little box at the end of the instrument. thats a thing usually used for wireless guitar hookups and it'd plug into the audio out jack on the ewi
it sounds like both of you currently own a EWI and i was wondering if the fingerings and usage of it are anything like a clarinet. Because i have been playing the clarinet for six years now and im looking to branch out in my instrument usage and the EWI is where im headed so i just wanted to be sure and ask before i go as far as to order one. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the reply. Your right. I contacted Jeff's site and he emailed me within 2 days and told me he was using a Samson wireless system (AF1 bug with UR1 receiver). Your probably right about him using the stock sound set. I have the Patchman program loaded on my EWI but never use it. My wind rack uses the sound set in Logic studio as well as hardware synths. That's why I need the wireless midi. Any suggestions or is the Midi Jet the only available unit.
By the way, if you want to see a GREAT player on the EWI, search on Masato Honda here on the tube. There are many videos of him playing the EWI. I'd say he's the best I've heard on this instrument.
as far as depriving musicians of their job...music wouldn't be a "job" if everyone took the time to learn. We are too specialized as a society...everyone has the capacity to become a musician, but we have become too lazy...this instrument is amazing, and remember, great musicians are always going against the grain, everyone else is trying to copy them.
I got to hear Jeff a couple weeks ago in Cleveland and he did the same advertisement for it then. Same jokes and tunes. Kind of bummed to hear how rehearsed it must have been cus I thought it was all improv. But nonetheless it is still awesome to hear that EWI, and for only $650 I'll be picking one up soon as I have the money.
Wow. I've been playing the Yamaha WX5 for a few years now, using a MOTIF-ES RACK/PLG-150VL synth. Decided to take the plunge and get the EWI. It's cool that I can either stay with the internal sounds or use it along with my MOTIF... It comes Tuesday. :) :) :) Just in time to veg for a long weekend over Thanksgiving.
Strangely enough, I also just bought a BOSS RC-50 Loopstation (I think that's what he's stepping on down there)... You wanna talk about FUN!
Great video. I'm considering an EWI myself, though I don't know how to play a wind instrument (yet). This guy's performance rocks; very creative use of looping himself.
Akai should give this guy a commission. It helped to sell me. I had tried early versions back around 1988, but the self-contained synth in this sold me. Picked it up with the patchman music patches and love the sounds.

To my knowledge he might NOT be using MIDI data AT ALL!!
I think he just has a wireless jack output device.

I think he might have done this performance without the updated sound libraries from Patchaman which he seems to be using iwith his wind controllers.
Hope this helps

By the way, if you want to see a GREAT player on the EWI, search on Masato Honda here on the tube. There are many videos of him playing the EWI. I'd say he's the best I've heard on this instrument.

Great to hear such expression from an electronic instrument/

as far as depriving musicians of their job...music wouldn't be a "job" if everyone took the time to learn. We are too specialized as a society...everyone has the capacity to become a musician, but we have become too lazy...this instrument is amazing, and remember, great musicians are always going against the grain, everyone else is trying to copy them.

he's good though!! Ugh on the drums - no expression once again!

a load of toss. About as expressive as an electric drum kit playing BFD. Fine controller - but really - so unexpressive.

Listen to Micheal Brecker play it

I got to play one of these earlier.
Very nice, user friendly, and quick to pick up and play.
It's a lot of fun to play, and enjoyable to hear.

Not only does Jeff make the EWI sound realistic from Bass to Sopranino, but he gives a different character in each range! Quite some demo!!

Amazing Jeff; Yes, Akai should sponsor you. It IS the best demo of the Akai that I've heard!

Oh,this instrument will deprive musicians of their job .

How so? You still have to know how to play. There is no button you press to make beautiful music come out.

Just bought an EWI4000s from patchman. CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT! And I'm a freakin guitarist =)

Great Video.
I'm going to buy the EWI4000s too.
I tested it today and it sounds much more like a synthesizer then his does.
So i wonder how he configured his EWI that it sounds like this.
Would be great if anyone knows ;)

He has all the sounds from patchman. You can buy it directly from thier website with sounds already installed.

Wow! Incredible sound. Thanks to this guy I'm going to buy my own so I agree with many people here. Akai pay a commission to Mr. Kashiwa!

Can anyone tell me which EWI-sound/tone he is using....? Much appreciated!

Akai Pay Jeff a comission!
saxfraga 4 years ago
Akai should give this guy a commission. It helped to sell me. I had tried early versions back around 1988, but the self-contained synth in this sold me. Picked it up with the patchman music patches and love the sounds.
