The multiple stider battle I'd try in invicible mode three more times, it really hard!
Through the video you provide, I got to know take down the hunters first by woods, then it would be simple to bring strider down by magnetic mines than general three rocket launcher. And I also found that you can three took more more magnetic mines aside to preparation while you throw it failed to get immediately support not to wait for a long time to get new one.
i used to own the orange box, but sold it to a mate for a very good price, and forgot to play episode 2 unfortunately, now i really want to buy the orange box again, i just need cash! gutted
That's too bad really, but I think Episode 3 might actually be quite good. It could easily generate the dark tone that was absent from episodes 1 and 2. Speaking of which, I do think that part of the problem is the episodic gameplay itself. It's the difference between say, X-Men cartoons every Saturday versus X-Men the Movie in theaters. One you watch, forget, and wait for the next one. The latter is a cinematic experience that you can return to again and again.
Finally finished the article. Yes, I do agree with pretty much everything. I remember the frustration I felt with the end battle was precisely how scripted it was. I remember that the Striders would even WAIT for the player to drive up to the building before destroying it... not to mention that regardless of where the striders came from they all eventually ended up on one path right outside the base. It's easy enough just to destroy them all right there.
Thanks for reading... I think it would have been much cooler if they had just had the striders blow all the shit up - with the player wondering wtf if they hadn't been there to see it. For them they would get a kick out of going back through and replaying the scene. It's like valve doesn't think it's worth putting in if a player doesn't see it the first time. No doubt they are motivated by statistics which suggest players don't replay games.
You're also right about the "focus groups." I afraid that fan feedback is going to kill Starcraft2 too. Anyway, the artist should trust his own vision and let the audience take it or leave it. Game designers are becoming too afraid of failure and are losing confidence in their own creativity.
I guess it's starting to cost too much to make a game to risk failure. Focus grouping a product becomes part of the best practice to ensure the success of a game. However, I would argue that it hurts the long term value the game will have to a player.
Sorry to spam but to continue, it's so easy to know when hunters are going to appear because all of a sudden there is all sorts of crap to KILL them with EVERYWHERE... They went overboard in that respect really.
I agree with much of what you say - I complained extensively about this in my blog entry which you can read - if you're interested - in the link in the text box to the right of the video.
Good article. The difference I feel between the revolutionary nature of Half-Life versus 2 is that Half-Life asked a question and answered it decisively, whereas Half-Life 2 the developers asked a lot of questions about what was possible and then left that potential largely untapped. Good article -- you don't let Valve off the hook as too many critics do. In a way it's hard to blame them though; they raised the bar so high with 1 that they can't top it. Sort of like The Dark Knight.
Don't get me wrong I love Half-Life and I loved Half-Life 2, but the realism of the episodes is starting to fail in my eyes. The gravity gun is cool, but they go too out of their way to give you plentiful ammunition. Whenenever you walk into a room in ep 2 full of CRAP all over the place it's like a big sign that says "use gravity gun here" -- instead of feeling improvised it feels more like a playground... I mean in the last battle for example there are "logs" ALL OVER. No creativity needed.
The first time is hard because you don't know what to expect but seriously, this could have been a LOT harder and more realistic.
When your allies are so useless that they might as well not even be there it sort of ruins the realism. Not to mention that Magnussen devices are retarded... the bomb can stick to Striders and is advanced enough to drain their own power to destroy them, but it needs help to DETONATE ITSELF? And I love how they can't make more than one gravity gun...
This level is WAAAAAAAAY too hard... seriously guys i can't think of any practical way to do this, because as GF, you are of course the ONLY one that can kill the striders. And of course the Mag devices are the only things that can kill them. Maybe its just my current strategy, or maybe i saved at a bad moment but this is getting stupid...
i hated this lvl. it took me forever to beat and it sucked having to go back between striders, and i also had a lot of trouble just getting those round things on.
I remember when I first did this I was so utterly stupid, I was so ashamed, then after a few more times of pure shame, I found out by taking out 3 or 4 of the striders that run(the ones who have the large penis canon beam to fire) and using the logs to take out the hunters, it was no longer a menace and it was alot more awesome(mainly because I saved the nieghbor hood in the process without even knowing) God I love half life.

Buy the episodic pack, or if you don't have HL2, buy HL2 complete, it's the same but cheaper and it doesn't include Portal or TF2.

the hunters were so annoying they just kept shooting my magnussons and their were like 500 of them.

A trick I used was just run them over with my car. Usually one good hit and BAM they were dead. Made it a LOT easier. =]

That last one was REALLY REALLY close. One more second and the base would have been destroyed.

I love that the hunters are so vulnerable to logs as it saves ammo and is a quick way to bing them down. Running them down with the car is good too.
