@bassbone1785~ haha... u can get any combination u want. Straight cut with either syncro or dog engagement.... or helical cut with synchro or dog engagement.
ive got a GTIR gears 1-4 are straight cut and 5th is helical for hwy driving.. made 183awkw in 3rd gear on the dyno @ 13psi.. and straight cut is what made me fall in love with the car :) <3
Some say yes, Some say no. Helical gearset will have ore teeth in contact at anyone time, but only the ends and a bit the the middle of the tooth has contact, Therefore not speading the load evenly over the tooth, they also have a lot of side force's that do put strain on the bearings, Straight Cut spread have the entire face of the tooth in contact and are generally Bigger(thicker) in design.
Actually, all things equal, spur gears are in fact weaker than helical gears. However, with spur gears noise is a non-issue, and the gear pitch can be made coarse enough to suit the needs. With helical gears you would end up about as noisy as with spur gears, with the disadvantage of axial loads inherent to helical cut. Also it's quicker and cheaper to produce spur gears, which can be an issue when you need a lot of different gear ratios.
@DeathJr2006 that is a highly debateable topic, they both are strong straight cut is strong due to thicker and harder gears yet helical gears are strong because more mesh togather at same time, it is all personal preferance
they aint stronger. straight cut gears have less forces playing around with them so they allow for a lighter transmission casing. They are almost always used in sequential trannies.
They're a higher grade, more precision machined product. You can buy them in either straight cut, helical, or dog-engagement (I believe)
The dog-engagement gearset allows you to shift clutchless. I do it on my bike all the time. It's basically like a motorcycle transmission , but instead of a sequential actuator, it has an H-Gate lever.
It sounds like it's both turbo and super charged...

So if one were to put straight cut gears in, would the transmission still be synchronized (i.e. doesn't need to be double clutched)?

how much are we talking for a gearbox like that?, is it full straight box or do you keep 5th helical ? do you need to replace the selector forks too?

EVERYTHING minus ur gearbox casing is changed (but u can change that as well). all gears are helical, and they cost an arm and a leg

actually the choices are:
straight or helical cut.
and then you choose synchromesh or dog engagement.

Noshet. That's what PPG gearboxes are.
KuostA 4 years ago
no, they do have helical cuts, but they are much less common

They make both... dun dun dun

i love the dun dun dun part.
btw is it me or does it sound like hes reversing through all hears lol.
unluckykid256932 3 years ago
The gear wine sound is caused by the straight cut gears. Reverse gears are almost always straight cut, hence the same sound.
funkrider 3 years ago 31
@funkrider I used to think that ALL reverse gears were straight cut. But for some odd reason they are not in my 04' Tiburon GT.

@edratliff thats because Hyundai gearboxes suck.

@Feuerwaffen Tiburon GT transmission is essentially straight out of the Nissan Sentra SE-R
