After "Bazaar", "IT" is the novel I prefer by Stephen King, and this movie is very nice, respecting the story. And Tim Curry is very impressive (the first time I saw him, it was in "Cluedo").

he wasn't a spider either he was a godlike creature from a place called the macroverse which surrounds our universe. If a human sees his true form they will die or go insane because their mind can't comprehend it,thats why he would shapeshift. A spider is just the closest he can come to his true form without death/insanity happening. This is in the book, the movie version may have meant to portray It as a "boogeyman" rather than a creature from the macroverse, either way It's scary as hell.
