I really need to do this to my N4 paduak, but it means replacing both my pickups, and I cannot decide on what to get, thinking to go for a suhr set.
I have the original early 90's one, and either the bill lawerence has gradually gotten worse sounding, or it always sounded like a bag of cocks and I just didnt know any better.
Sounds cool, I have a relic which is going through complete strip and rebuild losing the shoddy washburn gear... May consider wiring it like that... It's been a while since I heard it play, you reckon it sounds better than the stock?
I've been thinking of getting an N4 paduak, preferably from the first generation. I'm just a little worried it is not as versatile as people pretend. Would you be able to make a video about the range of sounds you get with your N4?
when you say the first generatin o you mean the 1993 ones?
Padauk N4's are just plain awesome.
The neck pickup is really smooth and the bridge pickup is incredibly powerful. I think the coil tap is vital to add to the versatility. Fair enough it doesn't have a Tone pot so i guess thats its downfall.
If you can afford one, buy it, you won't lose money so if you don't get along with it just sell it on!
Yeh I meant one from 91 to 93. But they're tough to find, I fear I might have to settle.
I mos def wanna do your coil tap. Currently my main concern is that its quite a bit money and I don't just wanna play Nuno. Everything I hear online sounds like Nuno. I maybe hit up some classic rock (Page, Blackmore, Angus Young, etc). I know I can do some VH and Vai, but I don't play much of that. Do you feel you can get a classic rock sound out of ur N4?
if you dont want the nuno sound then just whip out the bill lawrence, as that pickup has a defying sound.changing that pickup to say a seymour duncan will give you a lot more (middle of the road) sound yr after/need. bare in mind padauk isnt a million miles away from the tonality of maple, very sharp/high pitched sounding, and the bill lawrence usa pup defo doesnt help matters here.
Give Tommey Emmanual a shot should sound classy if you can learn say classical gas but with an N4 tange to it. But depends how good you are at learning his stuff >.>
@BlueBuddha hi loved the tone you have. and nice playing dude.. i got an n4 paduak too and getting it coil tapped.. can i please ask, what amp are you using?? you got a nice smooth overdrive sound there! sounds like a boogie??? thanks
if you had a cheap N2 like me you wouldn't have had to do all that faffing around with coil tapping hahaha but seriously nice comparisons mate you can hear the difference
Great tones you are coaxing out of this axe!

The N4 does have a tone that is easily distinctive from all other guitars.Probably due to the cut away at the heel of the neck..

That's funny. I just sent my N4 off to have the coil tap push/pull installed. Sounds like it's going to be a good move! Thanks for posting.

the n4 is VERY versatile when it's coil tapped. the only thing it can't do is the full on 'jazz sound'.
