@Hammeron2M no, he worked several years as a test pilot, then was a commander of an F-86 Sabrejet Squadron in Germany, then made C.O. of an F-100 Squadron, went back to Edwards as Commandant of the U.S. air force astronaut school, then was wing commander of a B-57 bomber unit that saw action in Vietnam, then served as air attache in Pakistan.
I doubt that you're this old, but if you are, I'm sure you have seen the old black-and-white TV sign-off where they used to show "High Flight" during the 1960's. I think I became interested in flight and space when I was a youngster from watching that. It makes me nostalgic in the same way that The Right Stuff does. America sure has changed a lot! Seems like we don't have true heroes like Yeagar anymore.
INCREDIBLE! This has always been one of my favorites of all time. I was working at MGM/UA (back in the early 80's). At the time TRS was up for the academy awards, and I couldn't believe it didn't win. When I delivered mail to the producers' office who made the film, I told them that they had been robbed of their Best Picture award. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I still believe it's true. What a great film!
Awesome! I love this movie - a true under-the-radar classic. Got to enjoy the "Mach 1 Tune" as I call it as well as the barrel roll at the end. Anyway, interesting story regarding your connection to The Right Stuff.
@Defender78 - According to Chuck himself; Had he actually done that barrel role going mach 1 you would of found bits and pieces of of the X-1 scattered about several states of the USA..
@scrubbypea I just totally love this movie ever since I was a kid in the 80s.This is my favorite scene from the movie.I love especially after Chuck breaks the sound barrier and the scene shifts back to him after they are celebrating at the base and Chuck is still climbing and appears to get a glimpse of outer space....the "Mach 1 Tune" during this little part you nailed right on!
Don´t know if anyone remembers, but a detail that always makes me laugh in this movie happens whenever a group of reporters approaches the astronauts...because a sound which seems a flock of locusts can be clearly heard...any analogies? ha, ha..
Yeager had no university degree and was thus not listed at all by NASA. The truth is they wanted astronauts not fighter jocks like Yeager who might have been the best pilot there was,but astronauts need to be able to understand engineering and advanced equipment too.
Yeager obtained his education through the USAF and is an engineer. As the movie (and book) depicts, Yeager had no interest in Project Mercury because the program did not require _pilots_.
Hall of Famer offensive lineman Anthony Munoz also makes a cameo in this movie as an orderly in the hospital. They dubbed his voice in for a more menacing voice.
The Right Stuff won over Return of the Jedi for best sound effects editing and best sound achievement all recorded and realised in six-track Dolby stereo A type. The sound is a real blast on region 2 DVD, the feel of it and Bill Conti score is perfect from beginning right though the end credits, this was kinder film that I didn't want to end.
I've strolled past the 'glamourous glennis' at the air and space many times and I always reflect upon the American ingenuity and basic human condition which allows us to strive for more-fantastic movie. Period.
music to get you hype!

Sorry about the late reply.
I concurr with your post.
I'm 60 now, I served my beautiful Australia for 2 years in the Army, then 21 in the R.A.A.F.
Apart from that, YES, 'The Right Stuff', I feel, was ignored.
Disgraceful.
