The diesel engine also recharges the sub's main, and auxiliary batteries. They are a new design so "modernization" is not needed. Forget what they look like outside, it's what's inside that counts. As for the Kilos, they have been refurbishing them for the last 3-4 years. As a point of interest, some US naval commanders call the Kilo, "The Black Hole" because they are virtually undetectable.
