Eddie has a friend whose last name is Ledbetter. His friend got a letter informing him his brother had been killed in the gulf war. Eddie and his friend went for a walk and saw a house with an american flag on the porch. they stopped to acknowledge it but because of Eddie and his friend scruffy appearence, the people on the porch disregarded them.

Thats the story Eddie gave in an interview.

There are official lyrics, but they change every time Pearl Jam performs it.
