@michael19157 From what I've been reading, Iran's current defense doctrine is not centered toward "air superiority". They are very conscious that at their current level of combat air craft development, it would be very difficult to challenge any advanced air force "air to air", though they do have the F-14 Tomcat which is still a very capable fighter. They are strong in point defense, ballistic missile power projection, electronic war fare, and asymmetric combat techniques. They'll get there!

There is no doubt in my mind that they will soon possess (if not already) Russian S300s and S400s SAMs and they will construct viable ballistic missiles with long range and large payload capability. Their fighter aircraft are the least of the threat they pose. Asymmetric is the name of the game for terrorists and those who back them.

There were mock fights between the three and guess who won (it was not the aircraft that was funded) Yes; the aircraft is a copy of the old F-5 but if you put enough of them in the air, you're bound to get a hit and possibly a prisoner. A sad ripoff of the U.S. F-5 Tiger which was designed in the 1960's. Wouldn't three vertical stabilizers look more fierce? It's pure propaganda- hey look citizens, we created our own mean machine! They are very conscious that at their current level of combat air craft development, it would be very difficult to challenge any advanced air force "air to air", though they do have the F-14 Tomcat which is still a very capable fighter. They are strong in point defense, ballistic missile power projection, electronic war fare, and asymmetric combat techniques. They'll get there!

There is no doubt in my mind that they will soon possess (if not already) Russian S300s and S400s SAMs and they will construct viable ballistic missiles with long range and large payload capability. @michael19157 Well I don't know about Iranian/Russian military cooperation. Since Medvedev became president, Russia seems to have sided more with the West in regards to Iran's ambitions. Many scholars, and experts in foreign relations feel Russia will one day regret that. The West will surely betray them like it's done in the past. North Korea has nothing more to offer Iran in terms of military technology. The only thing North Korea has over Iran are nuclear weapons, and that's it!

@IAmOpenMinded Interesting that we are having this conversation now. The Russians just announced that they will not sell the popular S300 to Iran which seems to validate your point. I'll have to disagree with you on N Korea. So much of their natl budget is military, i.e. secret weapons R&D including nukes and ballistic missile tech. Unconventional weapons are one of their chief exports. Plus the N Korea govt needs the big bucks Iran pays them for this stuff.

@michael19157 Well I'm glad we're in agreement in respect to the reality of Russian/Iranian military cooperation. But the reason why I said North Korea has nothing more to offer Iran is because the Iranian scientists and engineers are more advanced in ballistic missile technology at this moment. Remember that NK has yet to put satellites in orbit, something Iran has already done. Plus Iranian missiles enjoy far greater accuracy than NK's. Maybe NK could sell other military hardware (Con't)

@michael19157 (Con't) such as patrol boats, artillery and such, but like I said earlier, other than nuclear weapons, the North Koreans have nothing over Iran's weapons development. And imagine NK trying to compare itself to Iran in medical, electronic, nano tech, robotics, and other related technologies. Not even close. But hey, every country has "pockets of excellence" in which they excel, and I'm certain NK does too. To me what matters is for peace to prevail, not who has the best weapons.

It is most certainly an F-5. The Iranians probably went with a larger engine that required changes to the aft airframe members requiring the tail(s) be moved outboard. I think this says more about the Northrop design than Iranian ingenuity...
