This is one of the most beautiful soulful ballads that I have ever heard by Stan Getz. I had the good fortune of seeing him live in Albuquerque back in the 80s. Buy the 2 CD set on Verve - it is fantastic ! And such a fitting tribute to a great jazz artist who died only 3 months after this performance in Copenhagen.
It is quite impossible to find the words necessary to describe/characterize such a wonderful piece of art. It went just to my soul, I never heard something like this.
Although a trumpet player, I have always listened to tenor players more than anything else. Of them all, Stan was my man. To me, his music was about love and beauty. I listened to this album before reading the liner notes. I was totally blown away by the transcendence (good word, KindOfBlueMan) of his playing. After reading the liner notes, I realized that this was Stan's goodbye to all of us, was so thankful for the gift, and so happy that his last work was in many ways, possibly his best.
I read somewhere that once Stan was diagnosed with cancer (liver and something else?) that he made an effort to make amends to those he felt he had done wrong or hurt. Having had a round of cancer myself, I know it does tend to get you to review your life. He always could play a beautiful melody, but this particular album IS special, perhaps for the reason you mention: that it was his goodbye to us. If anyone is new to Stan Getz, I highly recommend "People Time."
I watched "GATTACA" and I heard this haunting melody. I waited for the credits and tracked down the song and thus got to know about Stan Getz. When I listened to the song , a sense of sorrow came over me ; it was of an undefined nature, a heaviness which envelopes one's soul and actually, physically constricts the heart. Accompanied by this longing for beauty. A sorrow without a cause, or a name or a face attached to its origins, A need of desperate proportions for something or somebody.
Thank you so much. It is very beautifull music.
