I am American and have doubted British Comedy for years thinking hardly any of it was funny but then I really tried getting into it from watching Bean every second of every day and thought if Bean was English and that funny other shows must be just as funny and that got me onto Keeping up Appearances and Whose Line is it Anyway. The Brit's have it GOOD when it comes to British Comedy. I LOVE it and would never watch anything else. I LOVE BBC
despite her exceptional manners this leading lady really does very little for me. other than the traditional british miscommunications and a rather humorous dog, this show is little more than a study in british lifestyle, idealized though it may be.
I LOVE this series. It's the only thing I've ever seen on TV that made me laugh hysterically & cry. That was the scene where Hyacinth is chasing Violet down the street & Hyacinth's neighbours remark that she's relentless in offering people lifts. I think the reason people wouldn't find it funny nowadays is that people are too rude & would shut Hyacinth down before she could do anything really ridiculous. Actually I've noticed TV in general is not as funny as it used to be, but a lot darker. =(
everytime I type in "keeping up" it fills in "kardashians" - who wants to watch a crap show like that? Why can't there be more wholesome and truly funny shows like "keeping up appearances" with amazing actors in America? We're 2 overrun with reality tv - make it stop!
The British are too proper. This show wouldn't make sense being shown in the U.S. because Americans are blunt and someone in each episode would tell Hyacinth off. Many Americans (including me) would just start cussing her out when she acts like she is better than everyone else and criticizes people. I wonder how she wold react to that. lol
@adamisabfab No one in England is actually like this. That's kind of the point of the comedy. The majority of Brits are down-to-earth like Onzlo and Daisy.
This show, Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Father Ted, AB FAB, Ripping Yarns........the Brits & Irish just have cleverer satire sometimes. And most Americans just don't get it. I'm glad I do.
Maybe Hyacinth notices people act funny around her, but maybe she feels its because of her so-called importance people get intimidated. How delusional but funny.
Poor Elizabeth. How can Hyacinth be so unaware that she's not liked? I can always tell when people don't want me around or want me to shut up. I guess she's so self-absorbed and narcissistic that she can't tell. I know a few like her. Hyacinth should know its bad manners to force yourself upon people. Maybe its a British thing where its rude to tell someone their not great or to tell them you don't want nothing to do with them. In America someone would have been told Hyacinth off.

This woman is the most anonoying person on TV since Frank Spencer. How can anyone watch it and laugh? It is quite simply, just not funny. But then again; it is Roy "Last of the Summer Wine" Clarke whose humour consists of his characters getting stuck in a wardrobe with the vicar - oh, how we laughed...
Hey, none taken :) Different sense of humour etc. Good luck with watching these - personally; I'd rather put my gonads put in a wasps nests than wait for inevitable coffee spills or Hyacinth to fall in to the hedge every time she goes round to Onslows and his dog barks at her. And for Goodnesss sake, someone tell her to shut up! xxxx;)
@Golfsplat1 of course every now and then it's a bit exaggerated but oh well... these kinds of series are supposed to be like that i guess :) you know what? my dog looks EXACTLY like the one in the car. i wouldn't be surprised if they were related somehow. it just amazes me... you know, that mixed breed isn't as common as let's say a german shepherd or a poodle xD
Oh she's so fantastic! Only an actor of this calibur could portray such a horrible, contemptable bitch. The series lacks a bit of credibility however, they wouldn't have gotten through the first few episodes without her character ending up in a wood chipper.
I think the whole thing is unrealistic with the minor character I mean. If you were that scared of her you would just ignore her and you wouldn't hide and constantly bitch. Its like Elizabeth, Emmet, Marjory and Phyllis have nothing better to do than to bitch about her and bully her.
its awesome that some people still appreciate the actual good shows. i dont have a tv anymore, so I can't watch this except on the computer. i wish i still had a tv... when we did it was all we watched. ddn't miss an episode.
Well Onslow is much more intelligent then Peter Griffin. He watches open university and reads physics and philosphy books. He can also be very philosphical when he wants to be.
The only things that Peter and Onslow have in common is their both fat and lazy.
LOL! I can't help but admire Hyacinth! How great would life be if we could all be like her? To have practically the entire town despise you in the very least do everything they can to avoid you, but all you see is a steady line of admirers and people who think everything you do is classy and supreme. There's got to be a drug out there for that!
@Shanniquitie, I will NOT have you insinuating Hyacinth would use drug that could leave such an unclassy looking white powder under her nose! How undignified! You should be ashamed! :->
everyone loooooves hyacinth!! if i grow old i want to be like her lmao, shes such a tragicomic character "richard i wont let you go out the house with your shirt half undone!" - hardly! haha thanks for uploading :) x
@twiwonder I agree with you. Today's show feel you have to be filthy, curse, and have sex in everything they do. I don't think anyone is talented if they have to resort to filth all the time. Sometimes it gets boring. Whatever happen to good humor, a story and plot, good characters, and good writing? We wonder why our kids are so messed up, even the cartoons are bad and nonsense..
@MusicandDancing4Ever oh wow. 41 likes. thought i'd get cussed out for saying that ^^ and yes, thank you. I'm glad you agree. And my friends wonder why I haven't watched TV in years.............
@MusicandDancing4Ever I agree. It's the writing. Every sitcom today is a "one-joke" sitcom:
The Office is just that guy (the boss) saying inappropriate things and making people uncomfortable. Every show, every scene. How in the world do people even find that remotely funny?
Two and a Half Men: It's just Charlie Sheen making cracks about his sexual exploits or him being a bad role model for the kid. Every scene in every show. it's the same bit. Mind-boggling.
Omg i love this show i use to watch it every saturday afternoon on channel 2 here in florida and i guess its off the air thank god for outlet like this i can now watch the shows i LOVE thanks for posting it...............do you have "Are you being serve?
