  • IS good as other german movies such the lives of others, europa europa, downfall, stalingrad, das boot?????

  • @folladordeprostis better than all, arguably the greatest film of the last decade

  • Just saw this movie. I understand it's a movie about evil but I don't think it's that simple. A repressed society does not create evil. Let me repeat that a repressed society does not create evil. A repressed economy will. People didn't follow Hitler because they're repressed they follow him because the economy sucks.

  • @hcronos

It does not necessarily create evil, but it tolerates evil and hails authority above all standards.

    That's what the movie shows.

The economy breakdown in other states did not lead to leaden times ina ll societies, so why in Germany after 1930? Or Italy? Or Spain?

This movie does not show, but rather indicates why it hapnned in a highly repressive and authoritative society.

  • Surprisingly good movie, watch when bored & in a lazy mood though.

  • preaty interesting film, worthy the watch! Watched the whole Film found at

watch !!! last !!! movies. com (delete !!!'s)

  • This film gripped me from the opening Bach notes to the very end. Wow!

  • So far, I did not find any person who had seen this movy while nearly all of them had seen AVATAR. Why should we be estonished. 99% of people who pass a painting by Franz Halz and some rubbish by Andy Wahrol, will ignore the former and pay attention to the later.

  • @BERSSIT Sad isn't it? Oh to behold the outright degeneracy of modern youth.

  • This movie should also have been nominated in other oscars categories

I recommend you to see the argentinian movie "the secret of his eyes"

  • Have i got the answer for you, Hulust! Just go to MYMOVIEPARADISE (dot) INFO and watch that great movie!

  • This film is pure perfection. I loved every minute of it.

  • Is a WWI movie,right???

  • What is the plot?

  • The picnic that didn't happened.

The way she looks to him... stops looking to him... and say: "bitte"

The eyes that go from his eyes to her lap and come back to his eyes again... and beg: "bitte"

Her anxious face waiting his attitude. The expression of relaxation of her face after his decision.

Finally, her hand on his hand acquiescing the necessity of offering her love to him.

All mixed in an ingenuous, chaste and pure face, that is worthy of a Strong White Ribbon.

    Sublime!

  • one of the best scenes of this great movie.i really loved her reactions and how she was looking at him...a trully masterpiece...go all and watch this movie

  • I've always found it odd, when someone frequently sees a movie like The Dark Knight or Avatar and leaves the theatre claiming it to be the greatest movie of all time. I mean every single year isn't going to top the last! However I must say that two weeks after seeing this film, I decided to add it to my ever growing list of favorite films (now at 38!). This really is a masterpiece. I can't wait to see it again.

  • Both are overrated, but avatar is more overrated than TDK

  • The Magic of great storytelling & B& W is still alive, Cameron. Your Avaturd will make you rich, but movie history will reward this gem of a classic Back to the Future classic well above Avaturd. Is excellent, I expected this scene to be magical & it was. The fact that the relationship is never fulfilled makes the scene as sad as those of Doctor Zhivago. I hope that at least foreign film makers keep alive good classic filmaking until the wave of over the top "Digital Blockbusters"

    dies.

  • no.

  • @peoplewhomatter, No? to what part of the comment?.

  • Those were two excellent scenes, but they didn't show the best part of either of them.

  • great movie, great description of the germans..

  • Hey thanks a lot! Do you happen to know who performed this particular recording?

  • Does anyone know the composer or title of the song from the trailer for this movie? It's so beautiful but I can't find it anywhere!

  • "Leise flehen meine Lieder" by Franz Schubert.

  • I have seen in Spain, is excellent!!

The best from Germany since "Elementarteilchen"

  • Am I gonna Die too?

  • Just watched it yesterday at Film Forum in NY. A must-see, Haneke's best.

But didn't like how this excerpts were cut. Take away the best moments of both scenes.

  • this movie was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think they give a lot of expectations to the trailer .. may be that when you finish watching the movie disappointments .. I say ...

  • lesbian bitch!

  • the movie impressed me. it took my breath because i can imagine this to have been real. no space for warmth, no space for hope.

  • Not an easy film, sure, but it's so worth it. This film will not be forgotten soon, it's beautiful, and it makes you smarter.

  • its so old but it is nice to watch this....

  • stupid?

  • lol what do you mean by "so old"?

  • Bellissimo!

  • The film mixes fiction and reality to an extent that it can be called an "essay" at best. The houses look northern German. The people behave like Calvinists. But they speak like people from Vienna (in Northern Germany nobody spoke high German at that time but flat German which is similar to English). this film will be forgotten soon. It simply shows people what they want to see. it works with clichees.

  • "Plattdeutsch" in English means "low German", and people did not generally speak low German in Northern Germany. For example around Hannover or Magdeburg people spoke high German.

And by the way the dialect of Vienna sounds different, too.

And there are still lots of differences between low German and English, believe me.

  • @Orjas67

Not true, around Hannover people spoke Plattdeutsch in the villages.

The old people like my grandma still do.

  • "The White Ribbon" is a very sophisticated movie. Comparable to movies made by Ingmar Bergman or Lars von Trier. Only for intellectual "egg-heads", thus.

  • Exactly the response one would expect from someone who probably has little to no knowledge of German cinema.

  • well, maybe your intelligence can only handle movies like titanic, scary movie or winnie pooh.

  • hahahahhahahaha gd point

  • Are you kidding? Did you understand nothing?

  • OK, I have nothing to say now. Very well-testified opinion.

  • the best of heneke's so far.

  • Really?! A must see then.

  • is this a dwight schrute biopic?

  • HAHAHAHAH well done!

  • 5*****'s I don't think it will be a big hit in Australia

  • This is comment of shit english.

you might want to elaborate on your comment?

  • dwight schrute is gonna love this movie

  • "my german is pre-industrial and mostly religious"

  • YES!!!

  • People who intend to see an awarded Cannes Festival movie are smart enough for making out a conclusion with less than two minutes.

I am so going to see this one.

  • Well I give it 5 "starts" because I find it pretty interesting.

  • it's called: subtext

  • you can't deny the holocaust man. The cruel treatment of Palestine has to be rectified and I agree that taking the Palestinian land and making it Israel has caused devastation, but this kind of ignorant jargon that hurts the Palestinian plight.

If we who are trying to expose the nightmare that is gaza and the west bank question things like the holocaust it takes away the credibility of the movement.

  • So true.

  • I am a very open minded person and I believe you are retarded. If your going to make a point then make one that is worthy of one you fucking ass maggot! Propaganda? FUCK YOU PANGACONSULTANT!! My Grandfather did not go through hell for kicks!

  • Looks a laugh a minute. I'm booking my ticket now.

  • This reminds me a bit of Heimat, although this is pre-war...

  • Apart from it not being about the Nazis, or even WWII, nor by an old jew-unless he is a very lucky one, you are spot on....in other words not at all.

  • are you retarded?

  • This film is set before WW1, so its nothing to do with Nazis anyway^^ And even if it did, you're still a cunt. The Holocaust happened. Get over it.

  • @Nizlopi2 Haneke's own words: "This is the Nazi generation, but I didn't want the film to be reduced to this example, to this specific model. I could do a film about modern-day Iran and ask the same question: how does fanaticism start?". Whilst it isn't concerned solely with facism, this film has A LOT to do with the Nazis.

  • @Nizlopi2 This movie deals with the mentalities in many parts of the German-speaking world (and Europe in general) that led to ww2. The kids in this movie will be adults by the time of ww2, and the silent rebellion they started in this movie, their lack of sympathy, their attraction to macabre violence and fascination with immoral acts will by then have bloomed into something bigger and even more terrifying.

  • @Nizlopi2 It does have to do with the nazi regime in that the kids woukd be the generation to follow nazi-germany.

I reckon Haneke has thought alot about what made germany follow Hitler, and why people will do atrocities in general.

  • @Nizlopi2

While the movie is not about the Holocaust, it is however about the generation that was involved.

We see, how they lived, how they were raised, intolerant and brutal, and how many double standards they faced and leaned to accept.

And how they accepted authority as being even above ethics and justice.

    Far above.

Exactly the conditions, under which crimes like those in the leaden time could be possible.

  • had someone stood up then to protect victims (jews, gypsies, AND MANY OTHERS) we would not need to remind ourselves of that evil time. from where im standing the people who inflicted such horror deserve the title 'bitter and twisted', so too do tthose who persist in belitting the systematic beating, torture, abuse and gassing of millions. talk to a survivor, you'll soon see it was no fairytale, it was the worst nightmare imaginable. your comments prove we need constant reminders of what WW2

  • this looks really interesting

  • The movie is set in 1913, for those who didnt know.

  • Haneke may be influenced by Bergman in various ways... That does not make him a copy...

  • Haneke is one of the best directors of our time. He's created a huge diversity of films--all of which are at very least, incredibly interesting. Can't wait to see this.

  • it's not set in the 1800s. And aren't most small town/village environments conservative? Are you seriously saying most of bergman's films were set in the 1800s and also black & white? have you seen his later films, do you not understand that when he started making movies, all movies were in black & white? Have you even seen haneke's other films? I would love to understand why you think he is a "copy" of bergman?

to think that you based this thought of yours on a short clip.

  • "on the eve of World War I. "

Read the description or learn your history better.

Haneke's films don't have music in them. Many other films are in black and white, especially if they're period pieces. I wouldn't call him "a copy."

  • I don`t think Haneke used black and white to emphasise the period; I think he used it more to emphasise the austerity of the story. I think Haneke is one of the most important film directors working today, and I agree to accuse him of copying Bergman (as opposed to being influenced by him) is absurd.

  • Well said. Or written. Conveyed.
