This makes me sick, I'm a christian, and i was yelling throughout this shes gay not demonised!!! I have gay christian friends!! Jesus loves everyone, no matter what, and this is goes against all his principles of love and acceptance and kindness.
@elmochick94 exactly!! even if people are religious they should still accept and be respectful of all people b/c they are human beings no matter what their orientation is. the religious people we don;t like are the fanatical ones who think other people should be like them. very good point. thnk you =)
NO. PLEASE! Understand. Not all Christians are like this. I am one. I am baptist but I promise you as soon one with a gay friend, I have no ill will against gay people. Jesus actually does love them too. Don't tar us with the same brush. We wouldn't never go to someone's house and perform fake exorcisms etc. I wouldn't, nobody who really loves the Lord would ever do that. Women like her mother are the ones that get it wrong. I don't hate anyone as a Bible believing Christian
There is a segment missing. Has anyone seen it? There seems to be a oranges are not the only fruit (part 2) - 6 missing. When you finish oranges are not the only fruit (part 2) - 5, the next one is part 3-1 and it is definitely ahead. Anyone have any suggestions?
are there bits missing? because when jess is in that womans house, then it goes back to her house- does it miss a bit? and at the end..? where can i watch the whole film without buying it ??
or at least, watch the bits that have been skiped..?
@AOD901 I'm not sure that's relevant. After all, isn't the priest correct when he says 'it's softer than Hell'? *If* their beliefs are correct, and she'll suffer the most fate imaginable without their intervention, then what possible abnegation of her rights in the prevention of that isn't doing her a favour?
This film/book still petrifies me to this day. I dont hate winterson or anything, but as a lesbian woman herself I have no idea why she created such a claustraphobic novel. hmm.
I know what you mean, it's suffocating to watch at times.
I wonder-- they say Ingmar Bergman was often punished as a child by getting locked in a dark closet, and that's why his movies are often "claustrophobic". Maybe this is a similar thing, the constrictive nature of her childhood is coming out.
I think the real question is why human beings tend to recanvas their traumas in their art-- it's a weird phenomenon. You'd think we'd shove them down and never want to hear from them again.
they are all filth Jessica is the only good one I feel like reacing in and saving her and stamping on them all like beetles. They don't love her. Pleasure is'nt always easy! I'll crucify them for doing that to her!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol those are roman catholics who do that sort of thing or othodox. Since this is just a show it is very interesting how the use her as a demon it is hilarious i think all lesbians who put lables on them selves in cluding bisexuals could get the same treatment.
I've always considered this story as man's inhumanity against man, more than anti-religion.
There are plenty of religious people who are perfectly reasonable, and they understand that this is not the way to handle anything that they disagree with.
When your beliefs are so powerful that they are contrary to their original purpose, it's time to accept that it's not other people that are sick, it's you.
These religious fanatics are just sick and don't face reality. To be honest with you I don't attend church and I don't believe god wrote the bible. These sick religious fanatics believe they are god's people and anyone who doesn't accept Jesus would go to hell. Thats a lot of crap.
I don't think this series is anti-religion, more against dangerous fanatical people who as surgez said are hiding their own prejudices. After all Mrs Jewsbury and Elsie are symbols of actual Christian kindness.
I've always been anti-religion too, from personal experiences and what I've seen/heard in the world I've hated it with a passion. But this story made me think. I hate people like the mother, but Jess never lost her belief, all the bad things that happened to her she knew it was the other people in her church that were at fault. She never questioned her own faith, it made her strong. That's what religion should be but unfortunately it usually takes the mother's form.
I think you missed my point. My opinion was that the people in this film who were against Jess were against her because of their own prejudice which they disguised as their 'faith', whereas she truly had faith that gave her strength. I was saying that this mini series and book made me rethink my own ideas about religion. It seems you only half read my post and decided to take offence without really thinking about or listening to what I was saying.
First part 2 - 3 is missing, now part 2 - 6. Has someone purposefully tried to censor certain parts or is this just a coincidence? Nevertheless its one hell of an annoyance:(
In the book, Jessi had been talking an awful lot about Melanie and even tried to describe her feelings about her to her mom. Guess that's what made her mom suspicious. Come to think of it, I suspect that her mom is lesbian who's still hiding in her closet.
I always thought there was a hint of that too. Like the photo of Pierre's sister she had in the 'past flings' section of her photograph album. She removed it when Jeanette (Jess in the mini series) asked about it. It was never explained but that was one of the things I loved about the book, so much was left open to interpretation. It was so so much about the shades of grey, even the mother despite the fact that she didn't believe in grey herself.
Interesting theory - do you think she turned so strongly to religion because she was gay? And do you think that the story of Pierre was fake? And was actually a woman?
Could be. My aunt had an affair with a woman when she was in college and today, her daughters (my cousins) HATE homosexuals and despise everything about it.
My gooosssh!! i thought they were going to kill her lol

Maybe exorcism is like this. The person is actually frightened; not possessed by the demon.

Actually it really doesn't. I'm Gay and a Christian, and the ones who are horrible towards homosexuals are in the minority of the Christian faith.
I've received far more trouble from Atheists than I have from any religion.
