This isn't a cheat. It was made on an emulator with extreme slow motion and re-recording features designed for making videos like these. Its called a TAS video and there is a website dedicated to them. I can;t post URL's in here, but doa google search for TAS videos.

a more obvious one would be the level 2 sub boss...you can CLEARLY see that a good number of those squares hit him, but does he die? nah. and dont just look at the subbosses there are also places he should have died but didnt in other normal levels. I could go on and on but i will let you all see for yourselves

he definatly had like some sort of invincibility hack...if you look at the first level with the 2 volcanoes, if you look closely you can see that some of them acually touched the ship, but it went right through it.

I say your speedrun of Gradius is so-so. You somehow used a cheating device to go through the enemies. If you want a real challenge, I can play Gradius I on the Gradius Portable game for my PSP. I can get through Gradius I without getting a scratch. I use some save files if I mess up.

This run was done by a player named Morimoto, and yes it's tool-assisted. For entertainment. He went to the trouble of learning how the hitboxes work with full speed ups, etc. So you can see him do seemingly impossible maneuvers that are only possible with full speed. Very cool.

To clarify: No cheats were used here. Only thing is , the author of the video probably used an emulator to surpass human limitations such as reflexes and dexterity. And the Speed Ups helped because the player unit "skipped" more pixels than normal, particularly those pixels occupied by terrain, enemy units or enemy projectiles, thus avoiding death.

If I were wrong in my presumptions, the pilot of the ship would have to be a coordinater.
