  • its just a matter of intonation on the top hand which is a bit weak but this tone is quite ´´sweet´´ to some ears I suppose

  • They sound great to me.lovely steady drones too.

  • The top hand doesn't sound as good as cane tbh.

  • I will too. That's incredible. I might use it this next competition season if I do.

  • do you have tape over any of your finger holes? does the reed keep the chanter in tune?

  • @2400346

If you care to watch longer than 14 seconds you'll hear them kick in perfectly in tune.

  • freeeeeeedoooooooom!

  • wow a plastic reed 0_o please can u tell me what the price is for a strength 15 reed ?

  • @NCPiper Re your comment 9 months ago - what do you think of the reed now, 9 months on? What strength is it? Has there been any change in the reed over the 9 months? Does it still choke with grips from high A?

  • not bad, not bad at all.

The High A sounds a bit weak and squeaky, but it's definetely not bad at all.

  • Was that Vodka that you dipped it in?

  • Now, let´s go for the uilleann...

  • the highest note is neither as loud as the rest nor does it sound as full. the rest of the notes sound fine!!! I'd buy one.

  • incredible but cant make out any melody, maybe try some balkan music. did you drink the water afterwards?

  • Pretty convincing. Still a little evident in the top hand and the gracings.

  • What especially impressed me about these McLaren synthetic chanter reeds is the extensive array of dynamics and overtones that I have not heard with cane chanter reeds for the GHB. Very beautiful chanter sound, and moreover, you can leave your pipes in the box for six months and when you pick them up again, the chanter is still perfectly in tune. No such luck with the traditional cane reeds! Bravo Malcolm - yet another a significant advance in bagpipe technology!

  • Good enough for some basic gigs!

    for the liveliest piping forum

    Mark Grewar

  • Very cool...you need to let people know how to order one. Email me and let me know. B

  • B, contact details are to the right in the 'more info' section. Cheers, ausdag

  • Well, sounds better than those Clanrye things.. I'd try one.

  • I have several of these reeds of Malcolm's, and I now don't even bother with any other reeds at all..they are that good. The best innovation in piping since synthetic drone reeds. Best wishes Malcolm, David

  • well, i'm a listener to the highland bagpipes, though i don't play and i certainly can't tell the difference. very nice.

  • Mal I know you have worked very hard on this reed and I hope it brings you the rewards you deserve. I will bring it to the attention of the boys in the band and in general conversation at the games for the rest of the scottish season.

    Kind regards as always,

    Tam McGirr

  • Well now, why would you bother with any other reed. Malcolm, you've hit perfection !!! Well done lads.

  • for any wondering- the chanter is a 2002 blackwood naill chanter- un altered with a sliver of tape on high G and D. the drones are 1999 christies made from australian gidgea wood.

  • Well done. I hope it brings you well deserved fame and fortune!

You have managed to capture a good "bagpipe sound" as well in the recording. It is a very difficult instrument to record and get good results like that. (Gotta be the reed!)

Cory has also done the reed justice.

    Regards

    A
