A number of artifacts recovered by TIGHAR would suggest that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, made a forced landing on the island's smooth, flat coral reef.
According to Gillespie, who is set to embark on a new $500,000 Nikumaroro expedition next summer, the two became castaways and eventually died there.

@12345ruby54321 The closest and most accurate of all of the theories is that she was captured by the japs and killed. At least, thats the best theory that I found supported by the most evidence.
@KesslersCross When I worked at the Kwajalein Lagoon in the Marshall Islands back in the late 80's,I knew a few old native guys that were kids during the Japanese occupation in the 30's and lasting til 1944. They remember seeing a white woman (first they'd ever seen) up on the island of Roi Namur. She was a prisoner of the Japanese and the natives were forced to watch her beheaded. The Japanese executed her for being a spy. This was around the time of A.E.'s disappearance.
@nerblebun Wow, that is amazing! I wonder why more people still only consider this unsolved. I have always been interested in this but never looked into it till lately. I heard that if you go there you will come back a believer that she was there. From everything that I have read, my money is that she was there.
@KesslersCross What amazed me about their story was, I didn't ask about it. It just came up in conversation and the fact is....none of these guys had ever heard the story of A.E. I know Howland Island is several hundered miles from the Kwajalein Atoll, but the Japanese could have easily transported her to Roi. Roi Namur was the Imperial Army headquarters in that area of the Pacific.
wikipedia:During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.
i believe she died and thats what them bones where about found in 1940 but were misplaced and never found again they wanted her not to be found for some reason maybe its cuz she was trying to gather intelligence from japan
@rapcarblue The trouble is because of the war the bones were sent to Fiji and not London (it was a British Colony that found them) had they been sent on to London they would still be in store. They might well be stored somewhere the paper trail is cold. Personally I think she was have stayed near the reef and wreaked ship as that would have been her best change of being spotted by search planes. She was trained in search and rescue so would have known how to up the odds.
I believed they purposely killed her. As a pilot, you would have known better to bring enough fuel to fly across the globe, I mean, go figure.. As you can see, she was very known and loved by many, maybe that was the issue. Thats what the government was afraid of. She had the ability to change the World and they could not let that happen so they had to take her out.
if the japanese had captured her, you should have known by today, cause the war is over now. there is also strong current under a sea, when it land on one spot, it might end up on a far away spot.
@leedumett444 Yes, most likely. Run out of gas crashed onto the Ocean and now the plane is at the bottom of the Pacific, somewhere between Honolulu and Australia... a friking immensity, where most likely she will never be found.
They have some compelling evidence that she landed the plane on a coral reef and was a castaway for some time- the plane ultimately went over the reef into the deep. Check out the videos by archaeorama and Discovery Network, Finding Amelia. It was an awful way to end from the sound of it.
@InternetPilgrim Nothing conclusive. They found few fragments, small bits here and there. Just one lousy aluminum plate that could have been anything, from a piece of a metal boat to the roof of hut. They also found a ruined old leather shoe which might belong to Ferdinand Magellan or Robinson Crusoe, go figure.
@pixelsilva Yes but these were artifacts from the 2007 expedition. There was an expedition in 2010 that found artifacts which could carry DNA- they are testing them now. Enter “Finding Amelia” on youtube search. The first entry is 12 min long & posted only 2 months ago. Her plane gave off directional signals for a few days & the aircraft company says these would've ceased when it sank. I believe the skeleton found there was hers, although she could’ve been picked up there by the Japanese later.
She ran out of fuel and went down in Pacific. I don't know why it's so hard to accept the obvious when it comes to these "larger than life" public figures.
I grew up on Guam and I've flown over vast areas of the North, West and South Pacific. With the technology they had, not to mention her navigator having a drinking problem, finding something like Howland - Baker was 50-50 under ideal circumstances. I understand that their HF antenna may have been damaged on takeoff from Lae PNG...
@kh2hbTV usually it wouldn't be very hard to accept...except for the fact that if they did crash, there would be A LOT more cleared up things. For example, they were being led to an island by a ship. They went off course, but the ship would've seen them. Also, the airplane would've floated a while before sinking because she left most of her supplies back in South America. The search parties came right away and even if the plane did sink, ot would've left quite some oil floating on the ocean.
@StuffedSuperstars Emmm... You have some good ideas, but my dad was a B-52/D pilot. Fuel reading were not as accurate back then as they are now and a lot would depend on her speed and altitude when she ran out of fuel. The other thing you would need to consider is the position on water impact... I think the odds of some "movie-style" glide into the water landing unlikely.
Oil slicks? Debris fields? Very little on that aircraft, if at all. Even a drum of oil, impossible to spot...
What was Amelia's sexual orientation? Was Fred Noonan a lonely man with needs only another could fill? Was Amelia knocked unconscious by a clamshell while Fred did things?
If the bones found on Nikumaroro Island are not her's then I would say that she crash landed on the Marshal Islands where the Japanese captured her and murdered her along with Noonan.
UPDATE: On Dec 17,2010 investigators found three bone fragments on a South pacific island, And they found some old makeup, glass bottles, and shells that had been cut open. But in 1940 a British overseer found a human skeleton, a women shoe ,and a sextant box. They believe that the sextant box was fred noonan's, they also found an aluminum panel from the electra , and another women shoe. TRY TO SEE YAHOO NEWS FOR MORE UPDATES JUST TYPE IN AMELIA EARHART.
Albert Einstein still right , energy is not destroyed, is transformed, Emilia's energy is transformed into us talking about her for years, and maybe into many other things thanks to her.
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich said it best when she told the world that "Well-behaved women rarely make history". If she had "stayed in the kitchen" like some of you say, she would have been an ordinary woman, leading an ordinary life. You only live once, and though her life was brief, her death mysterious and tragic, she did what she lived for. Thank you, Amelia Earhart, for being an inspiration for so many people to follow their dreams.
I've seen pretty convincing evidence that she was captured and killed by the japs. What incentive would they have to cover that up? We've already had Pearl Harbor.
@joshooaa21 wikipedia:During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.

There is a good website; type search "Irene-Amelia" and check out the link, "Some Common Misperceptions of Amelia Earhart's 1937 Disappearance." The above video shows a National Geographic special produced years ago...
Amelia Earhart was a promotion. She made several records in the AutoGyro. Her conventional flying career was marked by poor decisions and mediocre technique. Maybe if she hadn't smashed the Electra on takeoff on the original around the world trip and didn't reverse her direction on the second attempt things would have been different. Maybe if she had used her trailing antenna instead of refusing to she would have been in contact with Itasca. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Maybe can get you killed flying.
She did everything possible to blow it. She missed her target, simple. I will be glad if they succeed in finding her airplane underwater. It will end all of the nonsense. Maybe if she had deployed her trailing antenna she would have had more communication luck. Poor pilot, questionable navigator, poor judgement=disaster.
she changed her identity? what would be the reason behind that?
being captured by the japanese seems somewhat possible too.
although some say that she ran out of gas and crashed, most people speculates that if she had continued on track she could have at least over flown the island in 15 minutes about, but she didn't.
@endlesssoul731 im believing she came back. jealous pilots didnt like her, and besides she was a women. being in a mans world se probally was given the assignement.and asked to return with another identity. but like kg says anything is possible.
@RodneyPlusGirls ya I know that but this person started bitching at me! that I was not realated to her! so all I am sayin is that I do not care if you don't belive me not tryin to be rude
I have an English presentation and report about her. I chose her simply cos shes amazing, unique and truly a woman. She makes me so proud to be a woman!....and if the government do knows the truth bout her disappearance, well fuck'em cos we have the right to know!!
as someone else said - check out the "Irene - Amelia' website .. there is a boat load of information on this case, nearly proving that Amelia survived. It's sad really as Nat Geo Channel is notorious for leaving out whole truths that stir up controversy.. It's a good channel, but they are not very honest when delivering the facts, or they do a good job of NOT presenting all of them.. check out that site and you'll see what I mean..
i read a biography about amelia and one theory that i bellive is that she landed by japan and was taken to an island and was taken by japanese soilders to a jail type place and there she might have been exacuted for them thiking she was a spy or died from disese and there was a woman who heard people saying white woman so she went to see and then in the 1950s that same girl who saw the plane wrote about it in the news paperand they asked people and they say they remember it
It's 2010... & time to bring the great, legendary Amelia Earhart home for good. For 'reality' based answers peruse the award winning Irene-Amelia website. Featuring twenty different page links, it is the comprehensive basis for a new, controversial documentary film due out in August. To this day there has never been an official investigation into Earhart's 1937 disappearance. 'Wait til you see what's coming next...
To be honest, I don't know the reasons of these speculations about the last flight of Amelia. The truth is tragically simple. You have to consider how is big that portion of ocean....... more than 2.000 miles of flight...No modern istruments for navigation..... A little error...... Lost in a desert of water fliyng around and searching... No more gas on the engines..... The end.
Only the eternal waves of the ocean can tell to us the truth.
This National Geo trailer is limited. There were THREE Irene Craigmiles, and one of them definitely was the former Amelia Earhart. It's even obvious anymore. Wake up America! You're all asleep about this. Conventionally accepted reality is not always true reality. 'Facts' are nothing more than parts of commonly accepted information. It's a fact: Amelia 'vanished without a trace.' It's also a 'fact' people don't disappear into thin air. Simply put: Amelia lived and changed her name. Wake up.
the reality is only the government knows the truth and will always and forever keep the wool over our eyes regarding amelia's attacks with judy range on japanese subs during ww 2 and the subsequent pearl harbor retaliation not surprise attack as we are lead to believe......
"When it comes to the national news media, the American public is guided by it at times to not see the forest for the trees." From the Irene-Amelia website regarding Amelia's 1937 disappearance. Believe it or not, Earhart did not die in 1937, rather, with important endorsements she chose a future life of anonymity. No on knows why to this day. She just did. See the Irene-Amelia website for the story.
A number of artifacts recovered by TIGHAR would suggest that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, made a forced landing on the island's smooth, flat coral reef.

she changed her identity? what would be the reason behind that?
being captured by the japanese seems somewhat possible too.
although some say that she ran out of gas and crashed, most people speculates that if she had continued on track she could have at least over flown the island in 15 minutes about, but she didn't.
endlesssoul731 1 year ago
@endlesssoul731 im believing she came back. jealous pilots didnt like her, and besides she was a women. being in a mans world se probally was given the assignement.and asked to return with another identity. but like kg says anything is possible.
halkiphulkiben 1 year ago
1.run out fuel and crashed into the ocean
2.faked her own death, returned to america and changed her identity
3.captured my japanese and executed

as someone else said - check out the "Irene - Amelia' website .. there is a boat load of information on this case, nearly proving that Amelia survived.

'Wait til you see what's coming next...
neilnils 2 years ago

Wake up.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology and sociology:
(1) What does flying and aviation mean to females?
(2) Why do girls want to fly high and become a pilot?
(3) How can flying benefit a females personal life?
(4) Through flying, what have female pilots proved and demonstrated to the world? or, What kind of social value(s) have female pilots brought up?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

the reality is only the government knows the truth and will always and forever keep the wool over our eyes regarding amelia's attacks with judy range on japanese subs during ww 2 and the subsequent pearl harbor retaliation not surprise attack as we are lead to believe......
