what sets him apart from other actors is that although he's gorgeous he didn't claim fame because of his looks or bod but because of his RAW, SUPERB TALENT as an ACTOR. He's not a dumbass too unlike other big muscled, so-called hot actors. He's a Yale Grad , can speak JP and Spanish and has striking wits.

i agree to that from A to Z....he is PROPERLY educated unlike most actors who havent even been to school let alone finishing it...he is a grad from Yale and its no joke even getting into yale....one can feel his sophistication and mannerisms when he speaks...and i have no words to praise his talent for acting.

I had aways heard from friends here in Japan that Edward Norton is fluent in Japanese. Now that I hear him speak, I'd say his Japanese is probably equivalent to someone who has taken a 3-month intensive course. I'm sure that he was much better 12 years ago... doesn't really matter though, he still rocks.

Until recently I was living in Osaka also, working as a teacher for Nova eikaiwa. In one of the schools we found some old textbooks from perhaps the early-90's in which Ed Norton played the character of an American showing a friend around the states. His character's name was Dwayne. It was pretty funny to see. He looked so young but still recognisable. The 90's fashion he wore in the pictures was pretty bad.

Japanese, in comparison with some other widely spoken languages in the world, is not that difficult to learn. Try Greek, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and Russian and their dialects and some other African languages then you'd know how 'difficult' they are. Well, for some reason people do not need to learn those languages in their life.

I think that's because Western people usually are good at communicate with people. Most of us are not as good as you guys even if we want to. We usually get nervous at first. He's thinking not speaking : he's definetely not fluent .

Furthermore his vocabulary and grammar are basic he uses only finished tense while a progressive would be more appropriated.

Last but not least he made at least one mistake: zenzen involves a negative tense .....

I'm not bragging about my skill in japanese : as a matter of fact I'm not yet very good either still I'm able to see he doesn't really speak japanese (even if I love this actor )
