@soapbarbob, yeah an' sell my clothes, i don't need'em anymore :)
leo is awesome... i have at least one of his albums, maybe two and was lucky enuff to see him do a walk on at a lyle lovett show in t.o. i barely remember lyle, but i sometimes think back on it as if it were a leo concert. lol :)
I don't know who wrote the song, but this is an acoustic cover of Arms of Mary, a 1976 hit for Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. The lyrics are very poignant.
I used to play this on the old Epiphone. The difference is that Leo can play it flawlessly. It's not an especially difficult piece, but it's hard not to have a few clunkers.
love to see you try to Waltz to this! a waltz is written in 3/4 time, you'ld be all over the place mate! Don't apply for strictly come dancing!!! you could end up making John Sergeant look like the dog's bo***cks Nice playing though.
After he left his fingerpicks, I always thought he played without nails, but it really looks like he's got some here, obviously the thumb is grown out a little.
Who did this song first? Was it the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver? (see video elsewhere here on YouTube). Nicely done, I love Kottke's style. Thanks for posting.
My ooh My! the memories... me from Macon GA, and my two buddies from Pine Bluff ARK, and Midland TX sitting around the Marine Corps barracks in 76. If only we had video back then.
(Oh Lordy!.. the time we first discovered fruit loops in Hollywood CA on weekend liberty.)
what I love about Kottke is that even that this is so obvioulsy deeply emotional, he doesn't play sentimentally...there's never any "ear candy " with him...its just the meat and potatoes...unlike Bensusan and the rest of that type of guitarist's playing....
I have no shame in saying that this song made me cry. His style breaks your heart and pieces it back together before the last strum. Can I please have the tabs to this aswell? Of his stuff, this is the closest to my level, but surely he's just fooling us into thinking that its as simple as he's making it look.
I think the sound is OK. Not great, but as good as most on youtube. I am just thrilled to have some good video shots of Leo's fingers playing the piece.
if you 'dislike' this, you simply can't grok pure, perfect music. period.

Yet another example of Leo Kottke's genius taking a classic song and thoroughly making it his own.

@donaldwilliam The song was written and originally done by Sutherland Brothers and Quiver from Scotland. Chilliwack does a great version though.

So what is it about this astounding unique musician who can make sounds somehow transformatory?
martifingers 3 years ago 2
You MUST hear him play"Rings" recorded
at Rio theater,TX.He added an extra 2 or 3
mins of "JAM".Near the end you would SWEAR you could hear a CELLO in the
background. When I listened to his records and before I saw him in person
I thought he had background musicians or overdubed guitar.Truly the best!!-and
he's also funny as hell.

Sweetheart, he has 6 strings, but the last two are invincible - and can only be heard by people who are advanced listeners.
