Why hang it from its rear legs if you're gutting it? Stupid. If you can't do it on the ground, then hang it from its head - at least then some of the blood will help clean out some stuff. Plus, it's easier. How are you going to get the heart, lungs, and esophagus out hanging from its rear legs?

Got that right! Hanging it from the head is much easier. It's actually not nessasary to gut the deer at all. You can quarter him out, get the backstraps & the tenders without gutting him. Same goes with hogs.Leave the rest for the coyote's.
hanging it by the head is by far the worst way to do it. i skin, gut and clean about 25 deer every year on a ranch i work and give me 15 minutes and i can have have a deer quartered in the cooler. its much cleaner and also faster
Im 13 I shot and gutted my first deer today it was an 8 point buck that weighed 200 after feild dressed and it wasnt on a game farm. I live in kentucky.
WTF?? You always take guts out fast to cool the meat down . You need a new technique for removing the anus. IF you split the pelvic bone the intestine will pull the anus compltely out without getting your knife dirty.
Actually I thought since I was going to have the deer caped it would have been better to hang it upside down, but it worked out great after I cut out the anus and the tissue around the vicera sac, the guts almost pulled themselves out. All I had to do was cut the throat and the connecting tissue from the thorasic cavity & I was done. One of the cleanest field dressing I have ever done.

Actually I thought since I was going to have the deer caped it would have been better to hang it upside down, but it worked out great after I cut out the anus and the tissue around the vicera sac, the guts almost pulled themselves out. All I had to do was cut the throat and the connecting tissue from the thorasic cavity & I was done. One of the cleanest field dressing I have ever done.
