Practice like mad and spend alot of time listening to multiple genres of music (Broadway/Opera/Cabaret/Rock/Hip Hop or whatever) as this can all help you expand your vocal signature

I thought this was lovely. I saw a production of this in Chicago a while ago, and the actress playing Elphaba was every bit as "dramatic" as this, and she was INCREDIBLE. It probably seems more dramatic because we're viewing it up close, not as a theatre audience. And apparently no one knows this, but Defying Gravity is intense and dramatic. God forbid she do her own rendition and not try to be Idina Menzel. Everyone has things to improve in in any art and craft. So let's not be judgy-judge here

It's really impressing that you can hit those high notes without using your headvoice, but I agree with geekdancer... It can do some damage if you don't start using that instead of your chest voice...
@Stilletos96 Defying Gravity is supposed to be sung with a belt (that is actually required to play the role of Elphaba in Wicked) Belting is not just singing high in your chest voice. belting uses more diaphragm and is in a completely different part of your throat. unfortunately that is one of the mistakes many people make, and it can be very damaging and can cause nodules.
your good, but you really need to sing with your diaphram or your really going to damage your voice, especially when hitting the high notes. you don't want to belt.
Yes about the diaphragm part, but this song is meant to be sung with a belt. yes it can ruin your voice if you sing super high in your chest voice, but that is not what belting is.
I think you could do better to look at what menzel does and how she annunciates the specific syllables. Your version was good, you have the voice for it. Now what you really wnat to do is see how good you are trying to belt it out, like the last few bars of the song?
Also, go back and look at the wicked witch from the original movie. Sure it's a far cry but when you look at Menzel's performance you can see that she did the same thing.
If you put a little more heart into it you'll get it.

What I meant was that if you keep practicing and working real hard on it you will be able to hit all the really high notes like a pro, its not like I can do any better, in fact I am really bad at singing in general and I am jealous and you are really good.

soo i read the comments first and i was kinda scared to watch it, but jeeezz people, she isnt that bad. yes she is over-enunciating a little but i think she was just trying to compensate for her microphone. and a lot of elphabas go to their head FOR THE BEGINNING (no one yell at me, i kno the climax must be a belt). however, for the lighter beginning, some elphabas went to their head voices to prevent it from getting to heavy.

my onlyt comment would be to not exagerate the pauses and try to feel the song more. focus on what it is saying instead of how good you sound and it will sound better.

It's really impressing that you can hit those high notes without using your headvoice, but I agree with geekdancer... It can do some damage if you don't start using that instead of your chest voice...

@Stilletos96 Defying Gravity is supposed to be sung with a belt (that is actually required to play the role of Elphaba in Wicked) Belting is not just singing high in your chest voice. belting uses more diaphragm and is in a completely different part of your throat. unfortunately that is one of the mistakes many people make, and it can be very damaging and can cause nodules.
P.S. she WAS singing in her head voice.

your good, but you really need to sing with your diaphram or your really going to damage your voice, especially when hitting the high notes. you don't want to belt.

Yes about the diaphragm part, but this song is meant to be sung with a belt. yes it can ruin your voice if you sing super high in your chest voice, but that is not what belting is.

I think you could do better to look at what menzel does and how she annunciates the specific syllables. Your version was good, you have the voice for it. Now what you really wnat to do is see how good you are trying to belt it out, like the last few bars of the song?
Also, go back and look at the wicked witch from the original movie. Sure it's a far cry but when you look at Menzel's performance you can see that she did the same thing.
If you put a little more heart into it you'll get it.
