What a tragic miscarriage of justice! Why on earth didn't the investigators look into the yellow truck owner for a start. One poor man spent 10 years of his life in anguish for someone else's misdeeds.
WAIT A SEC!! They said that the victims sent letters BACK to the guy. How did they know where to send the letters to because there was no return address on the letters??
Wait a minute? She started an affair *after* the letters? What, did it give her a good idea and turn her on so much so figured, "Well, if I'm going to be accused of having an affair, I might as well?" This whole town sounds morally-challenged.
I remember watching this show when I was a teen. Unsolved Mysteries, That's Incredible, and Real People were some of my favorites. Damn Im getting old...
Did they check the envelopes for DNA?? They better do that NOW!
This case is full of screw-ups. Most people would be released from jail if the letters keep continuing while they are in there and you are sure they aren't the author. It is so unfair. Ohio owes that innocent man a HUGE debt and apology. They fucked up!
Yeah right! Why would Mary and the Superintendent start an affair AFTER all the accusations and threats. If anything, they would want to stay AWAY from each other after all the mysterious turmoil. That affair happened before those letters started circulating.
The original writer of the letters is Kenneth Reid. A disgruntled employee of the schools who ished to get back at Superintendent Gordon Massie by exposing his affair. Karen Freshour (Paul's ex-wife) set the booby trap for Mary. It was intended to frame Paul. She took Paul's handgun from his garage and the yellow El Camino belonged to her other brother. Her new lover John Sorrick was the one who was seen setting it up. Paul Freshour sent the letter to UM, to coax them into airing his story.
Im calling that Mary set up the whole thing to get her husband killed so that the affair could happen without having her husband in the way. Im just trying to figure out why the hell the handwriting test is a huge setup
@acenace24 I'm inclined to agree with you. If she did do it, she certainly did a pretty good job of it. Then again, who wrote the letters when freshour was in solitary? That's when it falls to pieces.
@ziatease Both Sheriff Radcliffe and Attorney Roger Kline were behind Paul's setup. They were both trying to cover their own hides. The Sheriff did not want the whole thing to reflect poorly on him and kills his political aspirations. Some letters accused Kline of a murder he may or may not have committed against former teacher Vicki Koch. They were both convinced of Freshour's guilt and could not wait for proper justice.
In the beginning The Letter read.. (This is no Joke). What Happen .. Is it a Joke Now? HA HA HA... Now that Paul is in Jail... The Joke is on Him... ?
Its not the same writer ... his vocabulary changed ... Listen Well to the choice of words ... Different Vocabulary .....
You know what's REALLY weird, the guy sent the letter to Unsloved Mysteries in 1993 BEFORE the show was originaly first aired in 1994, THAT'S some weird shit
@CrimeK could be... I believe it was Mary or her Lover, or her Lover's lover or wife.. If it wasnt Mary herself... it was her lover.. I dont believe Mary started a relationship After ... It was Before...
This is so creepy. I can't believe that this letter writing campaign went on for so long. And poor Paul, he shouldn't be in jail. Really--what kind of handwriting test was that???? COME ON!!!!
Ok let me get this straight...Mary is driving down the road which looks like it has a bunch of trees and branches how in the world did she see a sign that looked like it was behind a bunch of branches and didn't look eligible enough to read, and what a coincidence that Mary was the one who pulled over to remove the sign and the gun did not go off. Stupid woman seems to me she did it herself. And she was having an affair but only after the fact...bullshit!!!
Wow, What a really strange case, The only thing I could think of is that maybe the anonyomous letter writer was a former lover or someone who was obssesed with Mary for a very long time and did all of this out of jealousy.. I doubt very much that her husband`s death was an accident, I think the letter writer murdered him and then tried to murder Mary and set up Paul.. Or maybe Paul was behind it and just had a friend send out the letters when he was in prison.. We`ll never know
@Goldenchild795 i reckon the letter writer was other mary, her lover OR someone that knows them both well a.k.a a co-worker. s/he framed paul, killed ron and got away with it
exactly - Paul did have something to do with this, why else would he erase the serial number from the gun - that takes a lot of effort to do. If someone else would have stolen the gun, it would have been the perfect plan to leave the serial number there and frame Paul. Paul wasn't set up, he was caught. But someone else who wanted to see him free helped him continue to write the letters to sidetrack the police.
Also, if it wasn't Paul, why would the Circleville writer rub off the guns serial number? The writer had nothing to worry about as it wasn't his gun. It was either Paul, or this one story is fake, or the writer rubbed the serial number off to try to trick.
little hard to believe Freshour did not have anything to do with it. His gun is best evidence .. of course if he was involved why would be so stupid to use his own weapon to set up the bobby trap? anyways, intial victims said they were convinced that they knew the i.d. of the letter writer..so who did they suspect?
God, why would you tell him to copy the letters? Could you make it more obvious for him to avoid? Just get a sample from his tax returns or something. WTF?
She obviously was having the affair before the letters started, how come they supposedly started going out right after her husband died yo? I bet they were going out before that. You know how I know? Because I AM the Circleville writer ha ha ha!

He was railroaded I think but I got to be honest, instead of keeping quiet they should have went to the cops immediately whether they were actually having an affair was irrelevant.
This is a interesting story. Really creepy though. I don't know if that man did it though, it all seems pretty bizarre if you ask me. But I think Mary Gillespie knows more than she's telling. Hmmmmm, I don't know what to believe. But Paul did seem to be railroaded. I mean, what's up with the handwriting test???? Who does that??? Totally rigged
This is a interesting story. Really creepy though. I don't know if that man did it though, it all seems pretty bizarre if you ask me. But I think Mary Gillespie knows more than she's telling. Hmmmmm
I suspect the Sheriff. He is in a perfect position to know everyone's dirty secrets, to cover up exculpatory evidence. and his behavior in the case is beneath contempt. He coached Paul on how to look guilty in a RIGGED handwriting test, and then used it against him, withheld evidence at the trial, and continued to influence the Paul's treatment after he was imprisoned, even when he was obviously wrong. If he's not the culprit, he's shielding the culprit.
yes. dunno if the sheriff is the writer but he needs to be FIRED. if he wants justice, he shouldnt do things like that because it only makes the real killer walks free.
I don't believe Mary Gillespi, I don't believe the booby trap gun, How could she tell that it was a booby trap and why would she analyze it. I think she planted the booby trap and framed the guy
that poor guy! considering he was RAILROADED! he should have been set free after the first letter was sent after he was "convicted"! the police and the prosecutors should have to serve time for railroading an innocent man!
This case is definitely one of the creepiest UM has done. I read an update in 2009 that said the letters were examined and the examiner felt the Circleville writer was a woman because of some of the language and wording used.
I have always thought a woman wrote some of the letters as well. Can you tell me where you read this update about the examiner? I would be interested in seeing that.
@b1naryd1g1t5 The update was actually posted by another commenter on another video of this case which was unfortunately removed by You Tube. The obsession with an affair between school employees seems something a woman would be concerned with, not so much a man. I always thought Mary Gillispie herself wrote the first letters, stole Paul's gun and had assistance in setting up the booby trap, and her accomplice killed her husband.
@MidAtlanticGal I suspected that it might have been a woman because of the style of writing. Women tend to use curves more so than men when writing, men tend to use more angles. Some of the letters look like they have strong curves more so than angles.
do you expect me to believe that this guy put his gun in his garage not locked away not reported stolen . not to mention the cereal number was rubbed off if you were goin to frame someone why go to all that trouble this dude knows somethin
Yeah, I think I am one of the few UM fans that think Paul did have something to do with all of this. I don't think he acted alone, however. I think he definitely wrote some of the letters, but I think someone in his family planted the gun (his wife perhaps? She was Ron's sister after all). Also the guy in the El Camino was never identified on the segment, but I suspect he is also a family member or close friend.
I also thought it was strange that someone would try to set Paul up and then rub the serial numbers off his gun. However, it said that they were still able to determine the serial number despite the attempt to rub it off, so maybe the person(s) who set him up knew how to make a crude "rub off" attempt so that the police could still determine the number, thus making Paul look even more guilty. Not saying that's true. It just occurred to me.
@AdrianIsaacs my whole thing is remember when paul got that letter and it said "i told you when we set them up they stay set up""wtf is that supposed to mean also marys husband knew immediatly who was on the phone when went after him that tells me paul was involved someway.I think its possible paul found out about the affair and was jealous because he liked his sis in law and manipulated his wife to write the letters and it got out of hand and he also had her write letters when he
@TheFara1979 was in jail so he could have an alabi . i love this show but they are notorious for not giving the viewer all of the facts in favor for the creep out effect

@Tizmaole
yes. dunno if the sheriff is the writer but he needs to be FIRED. if he wants justice, he shouldnt do things like that because it only makes the real killer walks free.

HOW COULD U PUT THE HALF BROTHER IN PRISON?? this is BEYOND RIDICULOUS....its like a bunch of kindergarden ppl worked on this case.
safarigurl150 2 months ago
Absolutely, the person has to be female. Why would a male care if she was having an affair with the Superintendent. Paul was framed.

I don't believe Mary Gillespi, I don't believe the booby trap gun, How could she tell that it was a booby trap and why would she analyze it. I think she planted the booby trap and framed the guy

@lsatep I agree with you. I think she does know a lot more than she's telling
caitieness26 8 months ago
@lsatep To add, if she weren't guilty Mary Gillespi should have been interviewed by Unsolved Mysteries. So, that raises the suspicion.

I just love how they did finally admit an affair, they are hiding something

I felt straight away it was a woman who wrote the letters
cobbax9916 9 months ago
that poor guy! considering he was RAILROADED! he should have been set free after the first letter was sent after he was "convicted"! the police and the prosecutors should have to serve time for railroading an innocent man!

This case is definitely one of the creepiest UM has done. I read an update in 2009 that said the letters were examined and the examiner felt the Circleville writer was a woman because of some of the language and wording used.

@MidAtlanticGal
I have always thought a woman wrote some of the letters as well. Can you tell me where you read this update about the examiner? I would be interested in seeing that.
b1naryd1g1t5 11 months ago 5
@b1naryd1g1t5 The update was actually posted by another commenter on another video of this case which was unfortunately removed by You Tube. The obsession with an affair between school employees seems something a woman would be concerned with, not so much a man. I always thought Mary Gillispie herself wrote the first letters, stole Paul's gun and had assistance in setting up the booby trap, and her accomplice killed her husband.

@MidAtlanticGal People who do this kind of stuff have WAY to much time on their hands.

@MidAtlanticGal Sounds like the Shirley Jackson short story 'The Possibility of Evil.'

@MidAtlanticGal I suspected that it might have been a woman because of the style of writing. Women tend to use curves more so than men when writing, men tend to use more angles. Some of the letters look like they have strong curves more so than angles.

@TheFara1979

@b1naryd1g1t5 the letters continued after he was in prison
