my god you people have got to be totally retarded cretins to actually wrack your tiny drug addled brains to find something negative to say about arnold trying to get people healthier and to live longer better lives.
some of you thick idiots must be beyond anyones help....shame on you......
opening school gyms after hours = awesome idea! even better if they keep it free or close to free, but again even charging a dollar per person (50 cents for kids!) should help cover most costs or even help with the higher costs of putting healthier food in the schools
Obesity is a huge problem but there's no simple answers. Sugar and refined carbs are the enemy. School lunches make kids fat. If the government could change one thing to make a huge impact immediately they'd change that program.
Give this man your respect for what he said in this video.... Clearly these changes are the foundations of a healthier America. I goto school in 8th grade, and i see lots and lots and lots and lots of obese kids... And its basically linked to what Arnold has said.. The bad influences in home and school foods is what plays a major role in obesity. All Im saying is that im thankful to be perfectly in shape and muscular compared to others. Not that Im saying Im better, but overall. Go Arnold!
Hey 'SuperEnoughAlready' - please shut up! Your rant is tired and irrelevant. I'm so sick of that scapegoat. Sure, it's easy to blame disenfranchised people who can't even vote (but incidentally pick all the fruit and vegetables you eat) for the problems of your state or country- but concentrating on the real causes is so much more effective. Grow up and stop blaming poor people (who are exploited, if anything), for California's issues. Become part of the solution- not the political blame game.
The so called poor illegal alien people whom pick all our fruits and vegetables, have pushed all the farm workers labor union members out of a job, you idiot.
You know, that union that Cesar Chavez worked so hard to form back in the 1960's Yes, all those jobs were once occupied by 'legal' American immigrants whom have since been displaced by unfair illegal foreign competition. Apparently you don't give a damn if your state or country goes down the drain. Now piss off, punk!
How about all the illegal aliens whom are getting fat on the foodstamps we supply them with while they steal our jobs and suck our social service system dry to the bone.
C'mon Arnold, we spent over 13 billion on illegals last year, yet you won't even admit that they are a problem and a huge part of the reason that we are bankrupt.
You should get out and drive around a little Arnold, because Ca. is starting to look alot like Tijuana. We want an end to sanctuary cities, Arnold do your job
Hey Arnold, maybe we could have an 'INVASION SUMMIT' where we could discuss what you're going to do, or not do, about the largest invasion by illegal foreignors into California and the US that the world has ever seen.
Why do you refuse to do anything about all the sanctuary cities that fill our state. They are openly breaking federal and state laws, Arnold! Did'nt you take an oath to protect Americans and uphold the constitution. C'mon Arnold, quit ignoring our #1 problem and be a man for once!
Obesity in America is not caused by eating too much.
It is caused by eating the wrong food. Most of the food we eat in America is processed food which contains ingredients our bodies cannot easily digest so people become fat.
Eat lots of fruits and veg and organic meat but dont eat processed food such as burgers and McDonalds and fizzy drinks.
If you eat the right food you dont need to exercise.
If you're so tired, it's not because of big government, it's your fat ass dragging you down in everything you do. When are you going to stop thinking about all the rights you have, but about the things you should do to be successful. We have the worst education system of any industrialized country and the least access to inexpensive health care, everybody pretend to be a Christian but nobody gives a damn about the other guy's well being. Welcome to the USA. Just throw money at it, who cares?
I am so tired of Big Brother deciding what is and is not "good for the people" where does it stop!!!!!!!!! The country was founded on personal freedom not Goverment intervention! Stay out of personal decisions.
I'm a California resident who's only in the last year decided to take charge of my life in terms of diet and regular exercise. Beyond the hard costs, the intangible benefits, like reduced stress, higher self esteem and motivation to be an active and productive member of society make a focus on fitness well worth it.
Thanks, Governor, for this message and for prompting us to change our mindset.
Good speech Harnold, 5 star. I hope those fat morons out there get the message and learn how to eat. $15 B a year I guess, just for that shit, its lot fucking money, why?
those money can be toward to build more gyms around the country and offer the service to all the people for FREE..thats right gyms should be for free, $15 B you can pay off private trainers too,Conclusion: Free Gym for who lives in the US and more taxes to who getting fat..Try this system Mr, and you will see that you will
Hey Arnold...shouldnt you be focusing on getting California's budget back on track before you default?? Wow....I just burned 3 calories typing this.....
@TheNRA4ever i think thats alot more to do with the situation the nation is in... not necessarily his fault, but whatever fat people are gonna be fat no matter what.... laziness doesnt just shed from someone telling you about it.
It's true, 18% of the world population and we are number 1 in being the fattest. That does disturb me, how did we let it get to this point. We were supposed top be the land of milk and honey..not chocolate and double cheese burgers.
He Arnold, if you can come govern Texas for a while, the guy we got isn't cutting it. I'll vote for ya if this is truly the kind of thinking your all about. Keep up the good work.
3:00 is an incredibly good point. On the surface it seems like requiring water for lunches is absurdly unnecessary, but in the entire 12 years I was in the public school system I never ONCE had water with lunch. Every day I would have one chocolate milk and one fruit juice (read: sugar water). No wonder I got headaches all the time considering I didn't have any water during class either! I will encourage my kids in the future to carry water with them all the time.
what milkshake have 1.3k of calories in it?.. we talking about normal size glass here? And what (scone or cone ? ) has 480 calories. Anyone know what he talking about plz give me a reply.
Dairy Queen's large milkshakes are 1000 calories with 100% of your saturated fat for the day. Gifford's Icecream is higher calorie, but they dont list their shake nutritional facts, just upto 290calories per 100g. Im sure there are local places in california that use whole milk or cream in place of 2% milk DQ uses.
First of all, I really like Arnold's presentation and non rehearsed way of speaking. I also love his enthusiasm.
I think one of the big answers to health and fitness is to get people off of the focus on results and end-goals. The point of exercise for me is how incredible I feel WHILE doing it, not just the great benefits I get outside of it like a good body and less health problems.
I don't quite agree with forcing people to live a particular way (which includes eating) because that's just having the government dictate your life, but I have to agree that the obesity problem is a real drain on our system. I think a better way of doing this would be to instate taxes on those who choose not to be fit. Everyone with over 30% body fat should not have to be covered by those of us who choose to make the most of our lives.
@Chetnik2 One of the flaws with this is that it gives the government no reason to encourage people to get fit since they are getting more money from those who are unfit. But not only that, where do you draw the line of where someone who has a condition that causes them to have 30% body fat versus them just being lazy.
The system is certainly being drained by overweight people but I don't think taxing people is a viable solution at all.
@phatcorn How do you propose we go about doing this then? My idea has its flaws, and obviously, there would need to be a lot of thought and preparation going into it before it could be implemented. I don't know, I just really agree with the governor on this because I hate paying crazy healthcare premiums just because so many people are too fat and lazy to go one week without a doctor's visit when he's just going to give them the same advice and medication as before: diabetes meds and LOSE WEIGHT
@Chetnik2 I think what Arnold is doing right now is pretty much all you can do, which is try and educate people as best you can, especially changing the system in schools for young people. I think things like posting the calories like he said they have done in California and banning sugary drinks in schools. I don't think you can help the people who are older and already overweight. We need to start with the younger generation and get them fit and healthy.
@Chetnik2 But there are even bigger more fundamental problems with our whole dietary system in the first place. I mean, I can go to Burger king and get 2 whopper jrs., a chicken sandwich, and a value fries for literally 4.40 dollars. There is something very wrong with the fact that I can buy those burgers and chicken sandwiches cheaper than what it would cost me to make a healthy meal for myself.
very true, it's expensive to eat 3 full healthy meals a day. I was running a bill of 90$ to 120$ a week for a diet, and it was nothing special. I even went store brand on stuff and I was still behind on bills. Now I eat dollar menu...i gained the weight back and I feel horrible.
Exercise can help you even if you eat the dollar menu, now granted it would be better to eat right AND work out but like you said sometimes eating right is costly.
120 bucks a week just to eat right? Damn, I don't like the sound of that! What were you buying sooo I can avoid it?
I'm a furniture mover by trade so exercise is not an issue, I get plenty. And the food I was buying was Lean meats, eggs, grapefruit, salad stuff, bacon, sausage, and seasoning for the meat. I was on the Mayo Clinic diet for people needing to drop weight fast for surgery. It got to the point I was dropping almost a pound a day. Went from 280 to 230 in 2 1/2 months, I try like hell to stay around 230, any heavier and my job would suck ass.
Sorry to hear that. I know it's tough to eat right when it's just so much easier to get the dollar menu. For me personally, whenever I do eat the dollar menu I just make sure I get some aerobic exercise where I actually have to breathe hard (that is after I wait a few hours for my food coma to wear off). I know you said your job provides plenty of exercise, but that sounds more anaerobic. You can try some light jogging or bike riding to get the lungs moving.
And wouldn't it be great if we lived in a time where we still made our own food and actually had to work for it? I'm probably alone on that actually and the people who do work in fields would probably trade places with me in a second.
Actually I'm with you on that, I think everyone should know how to grow food, it's healthy and useful info to know. The only people prepared for any major trouble are farmers, in my opinion.
Now if we would only ban cigars! That would be a huge step forward in improving the health of all Californians. We should also look at banning cell phones. Clearly, if Maria is unable to follow the law, Cali just needs to crank up the punishments and enforcement! GO GAS!!! Cali leads the nation in Nanny State-ism!
50 billion dollars!! you know how much money that is??? It ain't shit. Let me tell you why.
According to a CBO est. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will cost taxpayers a total of $2.4 trillion dollars by 2017. This is taking in to account the fact that we borrow a substantial amount of the money we use to finance the war.
Seriously, one day we are going to wake up and realize the political elite class (if you haven't realized already) has completely manipulated us into a position of subordinace.
@thatguy488 i know what you mean, but on a smaller scale such as in california, 50 billion dollars means a lot more and can get a lot more done. like the governor said, it covers our current education or a modern transportation system.
I think we need an increase in the quantity and quality of convenient healthy food. Most times people eat "bad" food, its because its easier to obtain/make and it tastes better many times. Use the lazy to the healthy foods advantage!
Arnold mate, you're not going to cure the obesity issue by telling people how to live their lives. It doesn't work that way.
See, maybe if the world wasn't so messed up, people wouldn't be using food for comfort. No, society is to blame, it's everyone for themselves. Nobody gives a hoot about anyone else, do you think anyone's going to lose weight just to satisfy your concerns?
Greed and selfishness are the main causes of obesity, not sports drinks in schools.
I would say it's becaues of the lack of education behind the correlation between what you eat, how much you eat, and how your body works is what's causing people to eat. Well that, and people love to eat in the U.S. just for the hell of it.
Greed and selfishness fades into the garbage that passes for manufactured foods.
I think that FDA needs to step up its critical eye for food labels. Different serving sizes, sugar being hidden under five different ingredient names, msg, "natural" flavors- or just "flavoring" for that matter all need to be addressed. Nutrition Content labels were created so that people can know what they're eating and how good or bad it is for them... companies have found the loopholes and the FDA hasn't.
I wager the obese already know when they're eating something whether it's good or bad for them. The label is a lie, sure, but I doubt it really makes a whole lot of difference.
No, the problem is the world in which we live. Schwarzenegger is a great guy, but people aren't going to get up off the couch just because he can't stand an obese California.
You have to think about why people are eating, but nobody wants to, because nobody really cares.
Sure would be nice if we could be the Number One in fittest Nation, for sure. It is just like we have given up to caring about fitness. Hope that we can turn it around for our kids NOW. Seems like the kids are not focused on physical activity anymore but more Sex and material things. Creative and active play has been replace by electronics and video games. It is sad that the pressure is no for our youth to be thinking about being involved in sex, early on and not about studies and fitness.
Was that Gustav? Good looking Lab! Give him a pat for me please!
Thank you for trying to instill your passion in the kids, and their folks! You are heading up a fantastic service, some parents do not realize all the dangers of not eating right and lack of movement. A lot of kids walking around pre-diabetic and not even in high school yet!
He's absolutely right about sports drinks at school lunches. People often erroneously equate sports drinks with healthy lifestyles. The truth is sports drinks are engineered to replenish calories lost during exercise -- if you're not exercising, they're a fast-track to weight gain. Go Arnold!
If I had a kid that had to go to fat camp, I'd just tell them they were invited to attend the obesity summit

I'm probably alone on that actually and the people who do work in fields would probably trade places with me in a second.
phatcorns 1 year ago
Actually I'm with you on that, I think everyone should know how to grow food, it's healthy and useful info to know. The only people prepared for any major trouble are farmers, in my opinion.

California has to lead the way. The fact that 40 percent of schools don't even have drinking water is scary.

That's what happens when you go through the diet and exercise movement of the 80s and 90s. Next we will cure global warming.

Seriously, one day we are going to wake up and realize the political elite class (if you haven't realized already) has completely manipulated us into a position of subordinace.
thatguy488 1 year ago
@thatguy488 i know what you mean, but on a smaller scale such as in california, 50 billion dollars means a lot more and can get a lot more done. like the governor said, it covers our current education or a modern transportation system.

I think we need an increase in the quantity and quality of convenient healthy food. Most times people eat "bad" food, its because its easier to obtain/make and it tastes better many times. Use the lazy to the healthy foods advantage!

Do you really think all these methods of control and new legislation are going to affect how people treat themselves?
GiVeMeAbReAkWaKeUp 1 year ago
Arnold mate, you're not going to cure the obesity issue by telling people how to live their lives. It doesn't work that way.
See, maybe if the world wasn't so messed up, people wouldn't be using food for comfort. No, society is to blame, it's everyone for themselves. Nobody gives a hoot about anyone else, do you think anyone's going to lose weight just to satisfy your concerns?
Greed and selfishness are the main causes of obesity, not sports drinks in schools.
Venturai 1 year ago
I would say it's becaues of the lack of education behind the correlation between what you eat, how much you eat, and how your body works is what's causing people to eat. Well that, and people love to eat in the U.S. just for the hell of it.
bmariano 1 year ago
Greed and selfishness fades into the garbage that passes for manufactured foods.
I think that FDA needs to step up its critical eye for food labels. Different serving sizes, sugar being hidden under five different ingredient names, msg, "natural" flavors- or just "flavoring" for that matter all need to be addressed. Nutrition Content labels were created so that people can know what they're eating and how good or bad it is for them... companies have found the loopholes and the FDA hasn't.
DeadHopeless 1 year ago

Thank you for trying to instill your passion in the kids, and their folks! You are heading up a fantastic service, some parents do not realize all the dangers of not eating right and lack of movement. A lot of kids walking around pre-diabetic and not even in high school yet!
Keep up the good work Governor!

He's absolutely right about sports drinks at school lunches. People often erroneously equate sports drinks with healthy lifestyles. The truth is sports drinks are engineered to replenish calories lost during exercise -- if you're not exercising, they're a fast-track to weight gain. Go Arnold!
