It's an utter shame that Safin lost this match. If he had won, he probably would've found himself in the SFs against Federer. Haas also gave him a tough loss in Paris later that year; had he won that match, he probably would've won the tournament.
@ActionRadar886 Totally agree with you. Even though he had a good year that year coming back from that annoying knee injury the year before, and getting into the top 25, he was unlucky throughout. I remember he made several semis and finals that year and just could not close out the deal when he was in a winning position, probably would have been in the top 10-15 had he done what he should have in those matches. He said so himself. He had WAY too many of those kind of matches 2006-2009.
