even though 5.7 million is a huge number it is still only 0.57% of the population of India. The media sensationalizes it too much like its an endemic out there it's still less than 1% of the population that has aids. African countries have far higher rates like Botswana where the infection rate is 1 out of every 3 people.
Therein lies the crux - when you're dealing with 1 billion people, 1% equals ten million - additionally, you have a situation with diseases that once you reach the 1% margin, it is said that the disease has reached the endemic stage. Everyone must do what they can to prevent it from happening.
