I just a rendition of this song on The Simpsons - rushed to the computer and thank heavens for UTube - haven't heard his song in over 30 years. Just beautiful. Hope it won all the awards, I remember it was No.1. What happened to the writer and the band?
They were big influences of Todd Rundgren's whose vocal arrangements often would mimic the style of voicings The Association used. Of course, Todd has a style all his own but his influences are many and obvious.
I don't know if any of you have ever tried to actually play this song, but it's a REALLY hard song to pull off live, especially when they have to do all the playing and singing live at the same time. Sure, there are a few harsh blends in the harmonies, but boy... this performance is impressive.
Jim Yester is the greatest singer and even today has the same voice. I am so thankful God put these men together to form the association. It brings back memories when I grew up in California during this time. Keep on singing and bring it to Oklahoma City.
@thomasehunt What a beautiful thing to say. The Association meant so much to me. That music was a huge part of my life. Saw them in 1967 and again in 1982. Great music. West Coast music.
"A-Plus" performance...and yes, I believe they are not all on key at all, but you can see how they put every ounce of their feeling into the performance, and the audience was so loving, they really gave back everything they had to them.
YES! It was in Oct of 67, I was in the LaCrescenta High school auditorium, Montrose CA, Foothill Blvd,& Community Ave, ..they made us form lines outside and as we walked into the auditorium, The Association started to playing...they were playing a song called, Enter The Young.
Very nice live sound! I am always impressed by 60s groups when captured live on video or film. No one really knows how hard it was for these vocal groups to actually HEAR each other when playing live, they had no monitors so it blows my mind - just how did they harmonise?
I was in the audience when The Association did what they do best... dazzle the crowd. We Cherished the moment they sang that hit. And they sang Never My Love, the seond highest airplay song of all time in the 20th Century (You've Lost That Loving Feeling is No.1, and The Happenings reprised it last night in dramatic, passionate, fabulous form). ... Fabulous.
The Association are on tour in 2011---this weekend---valentines day shows---Feb 12 Queens College Colden Auditorium Flushing New York (with The Vogues & The Happenings); Feb 13 Rams Head Annapolis Maryland.
@rocksinger45@rocksinger45 You're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about the tremolo guitar at the end, that's EXACTLY what did it for me too!!! Still does to this day. What a beautiful production touch that was. In fact, I like how there's TWO different tremolo speeds used; the slower, beautiful one at the end, and the faster one before that during the "...And I do, cherish you...cherish is the word" parts. The 2nd thing that always did it for me was the vocal harmonies on the final chorus on to the end.
@deodato2 Ah yes on all counts of what you wrote and lets not forget the sound of the, what I called the "door bell chimes" an important ingredient in the song.

A hard song.. to perform live.. not bad.. but the studio version has the smooth sweetness that makes the song so great.

Probably THE best vocal pop/rock band ever !!!

This must have been SUCH a hard song to sing live, such complex harmonies. Gutsy of them to go on TV and not lip-synch.

In 67/68 this was the song that made female students panties wet when played at high school graduations.
I saw them do this live in Hollywood as a kid, it was always the tremolo at the end of the song that got me to be a fan. Great song Great Band.
Thanks for the memories & post 60's POP GOLD
