  • Tutorial for picking on more than 2 freacking strings!!!!!, i can't do it:(((((((((

  • Comment removed

  • WOW, NO WAY DUDE ... I am playing this first outside thing at halfspeed and haven't even memorized it quite safely - and already I feel my licks taking off. Like ... that very final lick of the stairway to heaven solo - I could play it before, but I'm rippin' that fucker now. Hell, it's been 2(!) hours and I have spent days with alt. picking exercises before without feeling anything. Hands down, best lesson I've ever had - ALREADY. I feel like paying you. Is that possible?

  • @MasslRockss lol u can thank the god john petrucci

  • The Al De Mi oh riff is better than this i think still pretty good tho!

  • I lost my picking after months of no practicing (too busy at work), this video is quite helpful. motivated me again to play. thanks!

  • hope this would helped me with my triplets....i'll try to play dry county solo which has amazing triplets.... :D thanks

  • Thanks man. I have problems with odd numbered, multi-string scales. Any rules of techniques to follow?

  • I agree with you, outside is easier than inside. Do you arrange your solo's to use outside? or have you mastered inside well enough to not have to think about it? I just learned a solo, playing it flawless (...well.. no string misses or double hits) at half speed, when I tried to speed it up I started missing and double hitting strings (mainly when inside picking) I am thinking now I have to re-learn the solo.... using only outside picking?

  • when i do alternative picking, my right hand goes kinda out of control. any way to fix that? thanks.

  • @aquaagu2 practice very slowly keeping a close watch on your picking hand and keep your movements tight and precise, and build up the speed. That's how I did it.

  • Who needs Berklee, I have youtube.

  • outside picking is easiest than inside that is normaly.........great lesson.....

  • 1st a**hole to dislike this vid will receive my ibanez on the face..

  • thank you very much.. can you suggest me some very basic scales??

  • AMAZING LICK THERE...

  • Very cool video thanks a lot !!

  • You sir are my idol, good job,and thanks for sharing this lesson with us!

  • an interesting alternate picking exercise... Mortal Kombat theme tune...

Try using alternate inside/outside picking to play it and you have quite a good alternating exercise also

  • this is exaclty what i needed. thanks a lot

  • is this exercises from John Petrucci, rock discipline?

  • @Dust0fNation Hey there, no I don't think this lick is in that video. It was more inspired by the lead runs he does before each chorus in "Pull Me Under." :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 I cant relax my fingers holding the pick, what's d exercise to develop my fingers to relax?

  • @GuitarLessons365 I cant relax my fingers holding the pick, what's d exercise to develop my fingers to relax?

  • @Dust0fNation its very similar isnt it

  • Great lessons man, you have helped me alot!!!

  • really nice!! thanks for your time and dedication...From Venezuela

  • really nice!! thanks for your time and dedication...From Venezuela

  • I'm sorry but I really cant stand video lessons without diagrams. Didn't understand any of that.

  • @maca515 Link to the TAB is in the video description. :)

  • @maca515 Looser.......

  • @maca515 Don't rely too much on your eyes. You need to develop your ears. If you didn't understand even the intro, this means your ears are poorly developed. I picked it up straight away thanks to my ear training before the internet-youtube era where guitarists were FORCED to use their ears to figure out leads. Just some words of advice. P.S. Nice intro melody, GuitarLessons365.

  • I did the Petrucci example and can play it nice and clean 'up to speed' as he stated. Still, it's not even close to the speed needed for the licks that come up when playing other stuff. For example, playing the chromatic scale starting on a low e string with a downstroke will make me do the notorious inside picking everytime I change a string, and that's where problems start 4 me - playing the 16th notes at 160bpm or higher. Any suggestions?

  • You're wrong to say inside picking is harder. More often it's the opposite. Beginners and intermediates find outside picking harder. On a 3 note per string major scale, for example, they instinctively want to economy pick precisely where outside alternate picking should be occuring. In contrast, the incidents of inside picking feel much more natural.

  • @lukedeacon That's your opinion and that's fine. After teaching for over 18 years in individual and group classes I find the massive majority of players finding inside the string picking more difficult because when you do inside the string picking you are always going away from the next string you need to pick.

  • @GuitarLessons365 i think it depends if your playing on note per string for example 12 fret on e string and 12 of b string its harder but uf your doing a 3 note per string pattern its easier than outside picking

  • @GuitarLessons365 totally agree i find inside picking much harder

  • @GuitarLessons365 what would be your advice to those with the same problem described by @lukedeacon.

I have been playing for three years now and am pretty frustrated with my picking technique overall. I still more or less instinctively economy pick instead of outside picking . Any way I can break out of this rut i seemed to have entered? I practice exercises almost on a daily basis but i dont seem to be getting anywhere with anything. Its been like this with me for a year...

  • @adarshmcool Hi there. I economy picked (when travelling across strings) for many years then around 3 years ago forced myself to alternate pick across strings (in other words - do tru alternate picking). It's a very painful process but you have to force yourself to do it and if you keep practising it and I guarantee it will pay off and you'll have much better right hand/picking control. See also my response to MichaelLozano12.

  • @lukedeacon yeah man. Thanks a lot. I think the key do anyone being a good "picker" as such is that he or she must try out different styles and a variety of positions and choose one that suits them the best. Which is the part that takes time and work. Your response kind of reminded me of the time and work part of the input that is needed. I now very consciously try to avoid economy picking over strings with a metronome which is the best way anything is drilled home when it comes to playing.

  • @GuitarLessons365 There is not doubt about it. It is much complicated playing inside picking for anyone. I can say that even some scales are played having in mind the proper way to start them to avoid inside picking. :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 after watching the first 3 minutes, it's easily "agreeable" that your right. and it even makes sense (in a way, your picking a higher note and your up-stroking, and your down-picking a lower note, i think it makes more sense)

  • @GuitarLessons365 please could you tell me cause i never find it oin anty alternate pic lesson and that is say mixolydian a i star downstroke yeah 3 notes a string so on the a string not d i start with an upstroke what about when i hit the d string note g is that again a downstrokev or what please help thanks ?????

  • @lukedeacon i think it depends if your playing on note per string for example 12 fret on e string and 12 of b string its harder but uf your doing a 3 note per string pattern its easier than outside picking

  • @lukedeacon you're wrong.

  • @Stringprodigy Give me your evidence. Mine is that I've taught around 120 students over the past three years, the vast majority of whom prefer inside picking. That's a fact. Where are your facts?

  • @lukedeacon that's not evidence, that's just your word, which I don't believe for 2 reasons - 1. Inside picking exclusively is absurd, and I can't believe 120 students would choose such an inefficient way of picking. 2. no offense, but the playing in your Eruption video is pretty sloppy, and there is no way you are getting paid to teach people to play guitar with that level of technique.

  • @Stringprodigy 1) The eruption vid was shot 12 years ago. OK for someone who'd played for just over a year up to then. 2) Get any beginner to alt pick ascend 6 notes on 2 strings (3 per string), starting with upstroke, & they'll do the inside picked down stroke on the 1st note on the 2nd string no probs. Get them to start on a down stroke & they'll instinctively want to economy down pick the 1st note on the 2nd string. Learning to move under the 2nd string then pick back up is NOT instinctive!

  • @lukedeacon I dont think either is harder, it just depends on what playing scenario your on. Certain times one may be easier than the other

  • @MichaelLozano12 At last a voice of reason!! I agree completely with you. The exercises on this vid are probably good examples of when it's easier to outside pick. But playing fast 3 note per string scales across multiple strings is easier (for alt picking beginners) when the travel between strings is inside. My original critique of this vid was that GuitarLessons365 was wrong to generalizse about outside picking. But I, in turn, shoudln't have generalized about insie picking. Amen.

  • @lukedeacon agreed.. when i was starting out i tried to do as the lessons told me to do and outside pick but my picking always converted to inside picking because it felt much more natural and easy. my playing is much more accurate, fast and consistent when i do inside picking so i decided fuck that, i won't even try to learn the "correct" way.

  • on a strat! tut tut

  • 0:01

  • @Tainted369 It can take a while, especially moving from string to string but it will be worth the effort trust me. Stick with it and keep everything relatively basic and your timing even and slowly ramp up the speed you play your exercises over the course of a few months. That should make sure you can not only play it fast, but with proper technique as well. :)

  • Never been so confused in my entire life:(Going back to Beginner Alternate picking)Damn

  • nice !

  • good lesson dude.. thumbs up!

  • ya I has that problem,,thnx...

  • Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Inside picking is a ba-zillion times easier for me

Also descending is so much easier, mentally and physically than ascending for me

    Any suggestions?

....my friends just says its brain mechanics and something I get to deal with

  • @numbersabcdefg Inside is easier for all the guitar players i know. Its also a million times easier for me. Economy picking is actually used to avoid the slowness of going outside the strings so idk what this guy's talking about. Great lesson anyways

  • @Traconiz Actually economy picking is intended to prevent both inside and outside picking across strings. With economy picking you sweep across two or more strings in the same direction. I think you may have miss-understood what I was saying about what constitutes inside the string picking and what is outside.

  • @GuitarLessons365 hmm i still disagree. My point is that in economy picking you only sweep when youre attacking the string in the same direction youre going and on the contrary, when you attack the string in the opposite direction youre going, you just alternate pick the next string (inside picking). Youre saying that you avoid inside picking and turn it into a sweep but then you'd bee very limited in a lot of situations. Anyways you're the pro so i might be wrong.

  • @Traconiz Hey, I think we may be getting our signals crossed about what inside picking is. Inside picking to most guitar players requires you to always pick in the opposite direction of the next string that you are going to hit. That is what makes it more difficult to control and do quickly. Hopefully I didn't confuse anyone with this video with the difference between outside and inside picking. :)

  • carl is there any benefits to master both outside and inside alternate picking? outside alternate picking feels natural to me and I do have troubles with coordination with the inside picking hahaha.

  • @jankrix When u play fast u have got to play altarnate...

  • @rsguitarfan true true I agree with that, my question is that is it that crucial to master both inside and outside picking or not, I also do alternate picking and that's the outside according to this video, I'm still practising the inside though

  • @jankrix I think that most players who use a majority of alternate picking try and develop both so no matter what you try to play on the guitar you can alternate pick it. If you do stick with mostly strict alternate picking you are going to have to play both all the time anyway so it would be good to develop a strong technique with both. Or you can develop a quasi alternate/economy picking technique to try and eliminate the alternate picking string change that you are uncomfortable with. :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 definitely the answer I'm looking for, thanks carl :)

  • kind of Maiden-ish

  • Thanks for another great lesson Carl. Where do you teach by the way?

  • @DistortedV12 Thanks a bunch, I teach in the Los Angeles area. :)

  • Yeah Man I dig it you add this to the finger picking lesson you have a bad country lick LOL

Major and Minor 3rd base lick, Cool in Metal Country Jazz, blues sounding thing a happening here .

I am still picking and a grinning with this one.

    Sweet lick

    Thanks Carl

  • Fucking awesome freee lessons and tabs.

  • Great lesson! Thanks so much!!

  • you make it look to easy!!!

  • the video should be inverted , the picking hand must be the larger image, that where the problem is, change that next time please, im stucked in a riff from a metallicas solo exactly like that...

  • I really enjoy how you setup your lessons. Anyone who wants to learn and understand guitar gets it free. And those who only want to play songs have to pay. Thanks. It promotes learning your instrument.

  • Great lesson Carl. Thanks!!

  • awesome dude, really useful keep it up!!

  • great!

  • Awesome lesson!! Sounds great, really cool stuff and very useful and effective! Just what I have come to expect from GuitarLessons365 ;)

Thumbs up as usual, and thanks!! :)
