Cant beat a bitta Slim Simmit. Grew up wid dis choon ya.....boss music! And when the version come in every sound man a play wid him equalizer. Bring up di bass likkle more no man!!
I went to my mechanic 5yrs ago & this riddim was blaring in loudest bass (female singer singing some love songs), I was simply blown away by the riddim...SInce then I have wanted to know the origin and story behind the riddim...wicked thing this!
What a masterful performance by the late great Slim Smith on the Lloyd Coxone Dodd label. Listening to the rhythem track enhances what to me is one of Slim's greatest to name but a few. Excellent.
ANY ONE KNOW WHAT SON THIS COMES FROM...." i feel the fire burning its getting tougher than tough, the haves will want to be in the shoes of the have nots, if the signs on your door then you will be saved for sure, but if you do not repent your on the wrong side of the fence...." any ideas other than marcia griffith???
@49browning Marcia did a version of Fire Burning with Cutty Ranks and Bob Andy did a version on his own...I will check my stuff see if I have it by anyone else.
@49browning Sounds like it comes from the black Freud, the brilliant revolutionary psychoanalyst, Dr. Frantz Fanon...or Marx...or Jesus...or Malcolm...or the BPP...or the 99%. 1%ers better wake up. If I can paraphrase James Baldwin: "If there isn't some serious noblesse oblige, it's gonna be the fire next time." Great sounds. Slim Smith is one of the great voices from the golden age of the rock steady to reggae transition movement. Huge Curtis Mayfield influence on Slim Smith, Pat Kelly etc.
yeah, Sanchez used this whole riff on "Missing You" which was written by Michael Bolton! So we have a direct connection from Slim Smith to Michael Bolton....
"you'll get crushed in the rush...straighten up, straighten up....lord, help them please....." i love this tune...its one of slim's few attempts at being 'rough and tough'
Hiya, it is actually the 'rougher yet' riddim or that was what it was known as originally, some folk think its the same as the 'love bump' because they are similar...check out my Sanchez 'Missing You' that has the 'love bump'. Im sure there have been arguements on these riddims, but not from me....take care :-)
@clanccy There's no difference between this and the Love Bump rhythm. Back in 1979, it was just a simple case of removing Slim Smith's vocals from the original master of "Rougher Yet" and letting Lone Ranger do his DJ thing on the instrumental.
@clanccy :it's the same riddim, they just call it "Love bump" since it's the name of the Lone Ranger cut that revived the riddim years after Slim Smith cut came out !
The original. Nuff recuts/re-versions of this riddim over the years I don't know how many versions of this I must have in my collection..! I also love 'Happy Times' by Slim Smith.

@Ayanfe13 Gotta love Slim Smith bringing his high tenor laments to such a lyrically substantial effort. Killer beat that makes you have to move.
