I wonder if Guillermo del Toro had this story in his mind when he directed his first movie called Cronos in which the main character transforms into a vampire after getting stung with the serum of an insect

This is really close to how i pictured this scene while i was reading it.I read the first two books and am about to start the third. The book reads like an action vampire script. It's really good. I just hope they use actual Latinos in it instead of Brad Pitt or someone doing a terrrible accent.

I hope they don't try to make these into movies. There is too much back story and side line stories of various characters in the books. Great for the book, but I don't think it would work well in a movie.

gives you a good scare and a reality of what the book is like. These vampires are not what we have come to expect, they are truly a scarey breed unleashed on a society not anywhere ready to deal with. I've been reading this first book, The Strain and I can't put it down, it reminds me some of Stephen Kings' take on vampires, swift, deadly, with no concience but to feed and multiply, this is one of the better books I've read in years! a real page turner, unforgettable

@littlebibs It's not the first time I've read a take on vampires where they were a biological strain. Scott Ciencin (sp?) wrote a trilogy many years ago. A little porn-y in places, but pretty good. Those vampires looked and acted more human, though.

you know what's amazing about this novel? They found a way to make vampires horrific again...yet, "The Master" is as intelligent as Dracula and perhaps just as powerful. It reveals vampirism in a scientific manner while holding steady to the supernatural aspect of it. (Super speed, hypnosis {The way The Master had Eph in a trance}, intelligence,ect.) It's very macabre, and very poetic. Gritty.

The Strain was a great read. Although can someone tell me why Jusef Sardu is listed as a Polish nobleman and then at the end of the book mentioned as an Albanian nobleman? Jusef is not a Polish name (that would be Jozef), and Sardu is certainly not. Why is there this blaring discrepency in the book? Also, why does the Jewish protagonist Setrakian have an Armenian name? I hope theres a reason for these things in the next two books.

Yeah, it is only a promotion. This is the trailer for the book, but yeah, hopefully he'll make it into a movie after he's done with the two "The Hobbit" movie and "Slaugtherhouse Five" and "At The Mountains of Madness". He's got a lot on his plate and we don't know for sure if he has INDEFINITELY confirmed this. Don't forget, he also has Hellboy 3 the make =). I don't know what movies he'll make first though, I can't wait to get eh book either!!! (I'm not a Del Toro fan at all...lol)
