It wa$ a really good deal however It did belch smoke like the volvo when started. Then, once it warmed up it went along pretty good. It did'nt hold up traffic or anything.
A characteristic of all round engines is that oil seeps into the lower cylinders after they sit for a while. It can be removed by scavenge pumps or by manually removing spark plugs. This is why you see ground crew turning the prop to check for fluid in the lower cylinders, since this can destroy an engine on startup. (Hydraulic lock) The smoke comes from the small amount of oil that remains in the cylinders and exhaust.
These replicas were built with a new 3-blade prop, but one example had a failure in the electric prop control and crashed. (It's being repaired.) The 4-blade prop is an original matched propeller for the ASh-82 engines in these replicas, and it was used as a precaution. The problem with the new 3-blade prop is now fixed (changed to mechanical prop control) and this example now uses the 3-blade prop.
@weedeaterbike no fake at all, in germany its forbidden to have the swastika on anything which is not 100% originally from ww2.... for example, if the plane gets a new part or new color, its forbidden to put the swastika on. Also on German airshows no swastikas allowed
Nope. But the Flying Heritage Museum has just taken delivery of their restored original A-5 with a BMW 801. There are a few running/flight videos available. The next scheduled public flight is August 6. A second BMW-powered original Fw190 A-8 will be completed for flight soon. Restoration has not reached the point of building new engines (yet) but new parts often have to be copied and manufactured to complete an engine restoration.
@IamtheAlienator Chinese? I'm quite sure that these new Wulf's are powered by an Ash-82. Ironic because that was an engine that powered Lavochkins! I would love to see BMW 801s being drawn up to original specs as well. I will lose sleep until I hear the real thing!
@CrotalusKid I looked it up again, for I was pretty sure they used a Chinese engine from what I read in one of my aircraft magazines. Here is what I found on wikipedia: "Dongan HS7 A Chinese license built copy of the ASh-82V, and the chosen engine for powering modern 21st century reproductions of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A built in Germany". They are cheap and easy to come by and fit relatively well into the cowling, so that

If you're gonna make a WW2 German plane, it has to be authentic. Obviously, this is a remake, so I guess I can understand no swasticka on the tail. But it just doesn't have that feel of realism.
The 4-blade prop was temporary (and an original prop for the engine) after another example suffered a prop failure with the new 3-blade and crashed. The prop problem is fixed and the 3-blade is now installed. Forward of the firewall is a different engine with a large capacity oil tank in the upper gun bay and odd-looking oil coolers in the wings which vent out of the gun covers. Good engineering for a replica since original BMW motors are so rare.
@gruppenfuhrer45 Ok, YOU find an Original engine and give it to Jerry. It's a Chinese copy of a Russian copy of the original engine. The swaz is missing because in Germany it is illegal . This plane was restored in Germany, test flown there and dissassembled. Then it was sent to the States for re-assembly. Give this man credit for doing what he has done, his collection is unbelieveable and I'm glad I live close enough to see these warbirds fly at their home.
The ASh-82 engine is not a copy of the original BMW, but this is often repeated incorrectly. The ASh-82 engine is an improved design more based on the Wright Cyclone engines build under license in Russia. Jerry has not taken delivery of this plane yet, I believe. But it will probably be shipped over soon.
@FiveCentsPlease LOL, I saw it Sat. It has been there for two weeks. I was just repeating what one of his engineers/mechanics told me about the engine after I inquired about the bulges in the wing roots. He said it was a Chinese copy of a Russian copy of a German Engine, albeit updated.
The wing root bulges are an improvement to the oil cooling system done by Meier. The wing gun bays now have oil coolers in them and the oil tank capacity has been increased so the oil runs cooler. It's a small change but the vents on top of the wing are hard to miss. The prop-mounted engine cooling fan is also now gone.
This political correctness is sickening. No original swastika on the tail? Instead a flag of the modern German state? Unbelievable... Stalin dispatches over 20 million souls and the hammer-sickle flew proudly for almost 100 years.
@Tiberiotertio -- Yeah, I realized that the shows are preformed in Germany after I wrote that, but to keep it authentic, I'd have the logo right back up there for state-side performances, being that I'm not a big fan of Orwellian re-writing of history for the sake of political correctness.
I suspect the 4-blader is temporary while FlugWerk investigates the crash of F-AZZJ which may have been caused by a failure in the three-bladed propeller hub. (F-AZZJ is now out of the water and in a shop for rebuild.)

Is there a company that builds new BMW 801 based on the original plans? I want to hear the "real" sound of the plane, not the Chinese sound...
