North Vietnam was actually ready to give up but Giap decided to wait a couple weeks when he saw the anti-war groups were protesting. After a couple weeks, the North Vietnamese decided to wait it out and they did so until 1975 when America had left and South Vietnam was weak and corrupt. Then they invaded South Vietnam ... something they never would have dared do with the Americans still in country.
