What I don't understand is why mercenary organizations such as the late-Blackwater (it has downsized to lower-level security positions and renamed itself "Xe" after severe criticism) and Titan (the organization involved with the "torture" scandal) are under such harse criticism. They operate no differently than any other contracting company in our society: the employers send contracted employees to complete work for money. HEY..Blackwater is GREAT. These guys ARE paid very well. With that good pay and not being part of the US Military, THEY ARE 100% EXPENDABLE. If they die, so what, they are paid to take that chance. These guys are NOT heroes. They are NOT to be held up in high praise. The REAL heroes are our guys in uniform with the flag on their shoulder.
Blackwater presents a very sticky problem for American citizens. What if they are turned on US? Shooting them would be legal, as they are NOT law enforcement.

They did a fantastic job under the most difficult and sometimes confusing circumstances. Most of the men are honorably discharged special operations types and combat experienced pilots. Problems can happen with persononell and certain teams, but these guys are the real professionals. These are the same guys that are training many Iraqis and Afghans in security.
