  • Classic example of how a sweet sounding kit makes something not that complex, just sound amazing. Dont get me wrong hes playing a really cool groove with some cool dynamics Chad is one of my favorite drummers but that kit is just so smooth. Perfect kit for their style of music they play. Not a huge fan of the band.. The players are great, but Hexum and SA get a little annoying sometimes and it makes the sound of the music redundant.

  • i likes this

  • Sexiest sounding snare I've heard in a while.

  • Comment removed

  • I wrote a song using drums from this vid and Pharrell Williams vocals from another vid

  • Two of my favorite drummers happen to be named chad (smith and sexton) and both use pearl now!

  • @sgcwproductions1 Chad Smith has always used Pearl from day one with the Chili Peppers. He did use Grestch very briefly when he joined the Peppers early on.

  • WHAT SNARE IS THAT?

  • @xXParanormalPunxXx

    OC 16-ply 14x5" w/ (4) large vent-holes

  • @311Vision yo do u kno the snare's head as well, most likely some sort of remos right?

  • @bobabeens Always REMO.

    Any of these heads:

    "Ambassador" (Coated)

    "Emperor" (Coated)

"Falam" (kevlar marching-snare head he used in the 90's)

  • chad is sick, just wish he was his old self on the last two albums. sort of a let down.

  • @gatorman22 Agreed. Seems lazy and bored, doesn't he?

  • @JPPraterCO08 ya, I mean he still brings it live, so at least we know he's still got what it takes. musicians change with age I guess. but I would buy a whole album of late 90's Chad just jamming alone.

  • errrrhhh!! the best drumming is when hees talking wtf!!

  • He's had some cool OCDP kits, but his new Pearl reference kit is freakin' awesome

  • bring the snare back

  • listen to that snare!!! Chad your the man!

  • certified badass

  • thank god he uses pearl

  • i like that he's a pearl man now.

  • @ granpastreetz ... I KNOOOOOWWW RIGHT??? I've seen this video a thousand times and every time, that pisses me off haha

  • gnarliest ghost beats ever heard! The king!

  • The best beat Chad was playing was around the 2:00 mark.....while he was talking..wtf

  • nothing special

  • chad definitely has his own voice in music

  • Absolutely agreed, very clean, perfect in fact.... but that's how it's meant to be isn't it???.....if you did less than that in grading you wouldn't get the distinction.

If you don't already want to get to this basic....but excellent level of percussion you should be trying harder!!

  • such a skilled and smooth drummer

  • this explains why there is sex in his last name lol

  • bullshit

  • I hear the melody in the groove.

  • @djhoitz Not live or studio. Ive seen pictures/video of him in the studio he uses a custom made cover/blanket over the bass drum, that isolates the drum for maximum sound isloation..

  • his double strokes are really nice - even and tight

does anyone know if chad uses triggers - either live or in studio?

  • @adriandrum i'm pretty sure he doesn't. he's nasty.

  • @100xines i ment his drum endorsement.

  • i think most people forget the fact that he played Pearl first and went to OCDP now he is back to Pearl .

  • What is amazing about this guy???Check out Elvin Jones,Tony Williams,Vinnie Colaiuta...One of the cleanest drummers out there???Ahhhhhhh

  • LOL so he loved OCDP so much, he switched to Pearl

  • this guy has such a random selection of videos on his channel lol

  • @311Vision it is rimshots, right near the edge of the head

  • everyone, search chad sexton snare tone its a vid. He explains it all...

  • the funny thing is that he plays for pearl now.

  • its not tight...its just rim shots

  • @ka24love It's not rim-shots, and it is tuned moderately tight. The pitch you are hearing is mainly due to the fact he is playing on a 14x5" 20-ply snare with (4) 2.25" vents, that gives it the dry/sensitive crack sound. I own several 20-ply OC snares. The 4 large vent's makes the drum a hell of a lot louder.

  • @311Vision dude..it's rimshots..he says so in a video.

  • @311Vision Yeah dude he's rimshotting.. that's why you can hear a variation of the snare sound throughout his playing (rolling on the head and rim shotting and whatnot).. Knowing that he WAS a marching band snare drummer, he tends to use this because, as with my own experience playing in drumline, you're taught to 'play through the head' as they call it to give louder accents and better tonality. As for the size, that doesn't really matter besides pitch and ringing.

  • @abstractpercussion My bad. I misunderstood that guy. I thought he was saying that Chad was rim-shotting thru the whole video only, which is what was giving the snare tone. Yeah he was doing a lot of rim-shots and ping-shots in this video.

  • A snare? Too tight? Too tight is when the skins tear apart and slap you right in the cock.

  • snare sounds way to tight

  • @drummer4life54 you must not listen to 311

  • hes holding a tennis ball during the interview ha!

  • Whoever edited this video was probably over the age of 45

  • @MattsArchive Take a look at how I use this vid to write a song. Very creative editing..

  • such a unique and underratted drummer!

  • hey othreeeleven...you made me lol! thanks

  • chad had/has the strangest rack tom positioning...

  • Really good, but

  • I still think that whoever did the editing of this video needs to get punched in the dick

  • Chad must have had some Tennis practice afterwards. What up with the tennis ball Chad?

  • How he hits a bass drum for every crash is a stylistic note I still find myself using to this day and the marching snare drum rolls are one of a kind. I've been trying to play like this guy since I was 12 and still, he amazes me.

  • lol he looks like flea from about 10-15 feet away

  • i love how his snare can sound like a marching snare

  • Less shitty editing and wipes, more drumming.

  • such a distinctive snare in the industry

  • @chjohnst hell ya, him and jimmy chamberlain too ... im my opinion at least

  • this isn't as amazing as everyone is talking it up to be. he's a lot better now. but in this video....? weak sauce.

  • one man marching band

  • i think this is funny he uses pearl now

  • @ritalinrush No joke? I didn't know that. Thought he would be OCDP for life.

  • @soundwaveCTR ya your right sorry i love pearl though

  • @ritalinrush I hear ya. I owned a pearl export (basic set) years ago and love it.

  • @soundwaveCTR no what he dos us oearl now sorry my bad

  • @ritalinrush i mean pearl

  • @soundwaveCTR Me too! And I was shocked to learn that he had switched to Pearl, After so many custom-kits from OCDP, he goes with a Pearl Reference kit? haha but after a while I warmed up to his new drums, Chad could make a fisher price kit sound cool.

  • that was fuckin rad!

  • OWNED!

  • 1:36 - 1:54 HOLY SHIT! That's some fast hands!

  • @SlipKnoTdrummer04 thats not even fast

  • hes fuckin good. i love his snare

  • does he have a double kick

  • Comment removed

  • I think he's a great drummer, but I HATE his snare sound. It might as well be a f**king trash can lid he's hitting.

  • he's a beast

  • WTF Who edited this crap?

  • one of the best drummers, and the best BAND. GO 311

  • its not like he's tryin to play the best of his ability, theres no doubt that chad sexton is a an amazing drummer, he's jus layin down some simple grooves so what if other people can play them thats not the point its just a promotional video anyways n now hes BACK WITH PEARL nice. Pear, DW, an OCDP all the way!!!

  • Not bad, but all very basic beats that any decent drumer can do. Don't see the reason for any hype.

  • @bochelizedyogurt

I guarantee you or most other drummers cant make it sound this clean, i promise that, chad sexton is a way better drummer than you'll ever be, just accept that

  • @jhazlem You don't know me. You're right of course, but then I'm not a drummer. If I was a drummer and I couldn't play that well after a few years I would quit which is what you should probobly do if you really believe you'll never be any good. Lets face it, if this is a showcase of his talent, he is over rated. And 311 sucks balls.

  • @bochelizedyogurt well the hype is...he is chad sexton. 'nough said.....

  • i want my snare like that so bad

  • @turf453 hey hagan i sent u a video to show u see u at school tomorrow

  • @turf453 you could always just flick an empty coke can

  • Possibly the worst display of video editing ever!

  • Uplifter is a nice album. Glad to hear this man playing drums still. Tasty snare sounds throughout his years.

  • Clean. Tight. No shoes. Smooth.

  • @dennyinsdca just how i like my women.

  • So obvious that he marches DCI haha.

  • Really hope There next album is a improvement. Didnt like Uplifter at all.

  • @FunK0Slap0GB I didnt like it at first either, but it grew on me.

  • nice...

  • one of the cleanest drummers out there

  • @cresfresh552 i agree

  • God, I LOVE him.

  • pearl reference drums sound great. but ocdp snare drums, theres no comparison

  • i know right :)

  • he could easily be a jazz drummer

  • Hawt...Chad is a beast.

  • From orange county to pearl??? No, thank you.

  • this is so much fun to play, takes alot of practice to play

  • i love chads chill slow grooves...he's still a great drummer and one of my early influences.

  • :29 - :39

I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY THAT. i tried it, failed. anyone know the sticking?

  • I think Chad threw that in there for kicks because the other parts are pretty easy

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou yeah man, it's not too tricky, I am assuming the part that's giving you fits is the hi-hat doubles? I will spell out the sticking at least what I am playing. R-R-R-RR(play this diddled aka doubled)-L-RR(same as first double)-L(ghost this snare note)-R-L. So in succession its R-R-R-RR-L-RR-L-R-L. If you've got anymore questions about the groove shoot me a message and I'll try to clarify anything I didn't get here. Hope this helps!

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou

looks like it's RRLRRLRL. just play that sticking pattern with the same rhythm

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou RRLRRLRL there it is.

  • i jst jizzed....

  • what kind of snare does he use?!?! if anybody knows, please comment back!!

  • i love OCD but the pearl drums are dissapointing. Chad playing is characterised by a tight, crisp sound and he´s lost that with pearl

  • agreed. i watched the promotional video of him with the Remo Heads and i was let down considerably.

  • @FunK0Slap0GB well put.

  • . . . . i can dance to this

  • What's the snare in this vid...it sounds very trick, crisp and clean!

  • yea man ur right...i saw them live back in july 2007, hes got mad skill. he could move around the kit if he wanted to, but ur right he can make use of whats right there instead of using everything and it still sounds fantastic

  • true that he's not an explosive drummer who moves around the kit at the speed of light and does crazy like polyrythmic shit and maybe calling this a solo isnt really right, but theres something about his feel which is just incredible. 311 are awesome and he got me into them coz his and their feel really hit the spot :)

  • I really odn't see what the hype is all about.. He's a good drummer, but I wouldn't even hint at "amazing"/ Everyone's entitled to an opinion. I thought he played OCDP..

  • @GrungeNYC: I respect your opinion...check this...as you listen to various solos...just close your eyes and listen to the SOUND...it's all about the groove that makes you tap your feet and rock your head...Damn that sounds good!!

    Jballzzz: Leader of Men!

  • He gets the snare sound through a vented 14 x 5.5 right? maple

  • he uses a pearl free floating snare.

  • no...he uses a OCDP custom vented snare with DW hardware.

  • actually he uses a 8x14 pearl brass free floating snare

  • making rudimentary sound amazing : chad sexton

  • He is way to good of a drummer to have the video effects ruin his solo.

Also I just watched Chad play in KC with 311 six days ago and he was playing a pearl kit.

  • Is he using Pearl drums again? I saw the video of 311 on Jimmy Kimmel and he had a Pearl kit.

Chad was the drummer who got me into OCDP. I got one of their snares just because they are so high pitched and ringy. I love it.

If anyone knows if he's switched I'd like to know. Thanks.

  • yea. he endorses pearl drum now.

  • no, hes stil on the ocdp artist list

  • @spongedar1

they probably havent updated their list

he uses pearl now. pearl had a segment about it on their website

  • he makes the simple seem not so simple

  • above everything else, i wish i had his feet. i dont know of anyone else who can groove as well as he can, and play so well with their feet (no double bass) and his bass patterns are brilliant.

  • @tangoyankee28 he is solid with his feet, but there are drummers who use single pedals and do alot more. still an amazing drummer though.

  • @muddcnt yes there are...but i'm not only talking about his single pedal bass playing. he is solid with both feet, especially the left one. a lot of the things he does with the high hat sound so crisp and clean because of his left foot. not too fast with the feet, but because of the excellent timing he has makes him really precise, and that is what i wish i had more than anything. and i'm still working on it haha.

  • nothing really special

  • I like how he uses his high hat in this drum solo

  • this has some parts from hydroponic

  • whoever edited this video needs to go shoot themselves

  • @TheJonathanPace lol..what you didnt like the dizzying array of camera angles?

  • This video is YAWN city!

  • @Pauliewanna Agree100%

  • @TheJonathanPace yeah seriously what is with all these studio videos having such terrible editing? we just want to see musicians playing, not a demo of every transition Imovie can do.

  • @TheJonathanPace what if chad edited this video 0.o

  • whats with the tennis ball in his hand at the end?

  • Strengthens his hand, by squeezing it, It's probably his lacrosse injury from a few years back...

  • ahhh thanks, i didnt know that

  • Does anyone know the sticking for the lick from 0:30 to 0:39

  • Chad Sexton, 311, I've been a 311 fan since '94. Yes. I've heard of 'Him".

  • RRLRRLR L

  • Its 16 note triplets he diddles the hi hat and adds in his off beat snare pattern RRL RRL RL snare is left

  • Dudes ever hear of this drummer?

I stumbled across this drum solo video via Vic Firth's website.

    Just type and search:

Paul Wandtke Vic Firth full live drum solo Mandeville, Louisiana

    This guy is badass too!!!!

  • u trator

  • This should have been edited on the musical changes, not random clipboard fades

  • and Chad , whay you are now with PEARL !!!??? MORE MONEY !!!??? better gear, more gear, better service !!!???

  • i wounder that my self i play an ocdp set and they are so much nice to play

  • His words were, "its an easier kit to play"

  • yeah "wright" ! PEARL is one of the biggest world drum companyes , good kits, good service,money,...... !

  • Im being dead serious, he really liked the Pearl Reference series, loved the way they play/sound and decided to switch back to pearl, which is where he was in the begining before OCDP. Chad has nothing against OCDP, but as every great drummer does, is continue to change drums to be constantly inspired by sound. He loves his new Pearl kit.

  • i might get a OCDP set they sound so great

  • i love mine get one

  • an apple?

  • whats in his hand during the interview?

  • A tennis ball. haha

  • it looks like a stress ball

  • a tennis ball!
