She was singing "The Star-Spangled Banner!" Does anyone have ears enough to recognize the damn melody? She simply combined the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" with the melody of the official national anthem, very creative and appropriate. The melding of Johnson's song of hope with the soaring music of the Star Spangled Banner created a new expression of faith in all that is good in our country. She simply combined the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" with the melody of the official national anthem, very creative and appropriate. I didn't realize that there was a law that stated an artist isn't allowed to be creative or put their individual stamp when performing our national anthem.

I don't find anything wrong with replacing a national anthem. after all it was a long time before the Star Spangled Banner was even considered to be the national anthem... and many countries in Europe had them later than America. Italy still uses an anthem left over from fascism and the country is divided on its use, but still it is the anthem.

I mean slavery and segregation is just as much apart of American History as the Star Spangled Banner. Segregation ended only about 40 years ago. So as long as this country has individuals who were affected by racial equality there will always be "complaining" for lack of better words.

As a musican, If I were so honored to be asked to sing the banner, I would not take it upon myself to express anything but what I was asked to. She is clearly gifted. I see this self serving kind of thing happening with alot of..artists It's too bad. At any other place / time I would have loved to hear her gift. This was not brave, this was self serving and arrogant. I'd have to fully agree with MrGilliardMusic. We need not worry about Foreign countries or entities dividing and conquering us, we seem quite willing to do so all on our own accord. Truth is I liked the song. Beautiful in it's own right. Powerful and moving, but this was not the place or time to sing it.

Listen though the timing of this expression might have been a little off. The truth still lies in the song. that song was what was in her heart and we as humans should not cower from another expressing their right of speech.
