Watching since n93. Wandy was good back in Pride for several reasons. The most important reason is that he was younger. As time went by, he beat the crap out of everyone, so they paired him with Mark Hunt and Cro Cop, and since then, his body has taken a serious beating. Secondly, Pride rules suited Chute Boxe's style. Lastly, you've got to be stupid not to know EVERYONE in Pride was juicing. Ever seen Sak grapple in college? Super small, now he has classic moon face from juice.

Wanderlei was so good in PRIDE but not so much in UFC for two reasons: Father time and different ruleset. PRIDE rules gave strikers a significantly wider toolset that they don't have today. Knees to grounded opponents, stomps and soccer kicks made Wanderlei's legend in PRIDE. Now not only is he older, slower (and the chin isnt the same, but eating bombs will do that over time), but half his finishing power is illegal.

I mean when you're doing no head gear full boar sparring, rotating between A. Silva, Shogun & Ninja Rua, etc..stepping in the ring against Jap subm. fighters/average strikers seems like a cake walk, so he sort of felt invincible back then. Also a lot of the comp. was sub-par compared to the UFC today
