"We have a lot more work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say 'common struggle' because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination."
Yes, all these arguments were made during the trial, and the other side took them apart. Even the ones making them could not defend them in a court room, as they were indefensible.
There is a high correlation between a person’s position on marriage and their vote between Turner and Weprin. Those who agree marriage should only be between a man and a woman voted for Turner 81% - 19%. Turner won Orthodox Jews 91% - 9%; Catholics by 72%-28%; Other Christians 53% - 47%. Weprin won among non-Orthodox Jews 69% - 29%; among Other/None/DK 76%-24%.
Moreover, among those who agree with the traditional definition of marriage, 44% said Weprin’s position was a factor in their vote, while 29% of those who disagree said his position was a factor. Voters told the pollster that David Weprin’s position on same-sex marriage was a specific factor in the voting decision of 72% of Orthodox Jews, 29% of Other Jews, 27% of Catholics, 33% of Other Christians, 27% of other/None/DK.
Its funny, Fundamentalist are for letting people vote on matters if the State legislature votes on something that they (the fundies) disapprove, but if the State Legislature votes on a matter that fundamentalist approve (South Dakota's draconian anti-abortion law is a prime example here) the Fundies say do not let the people vote. Can we say Hypocrit???? I think so!!! (Pardon my spelling)
There are radical Gays and there are radical straight people, too, just as there are respectable members of both groups. You do have a valid argument, there.
@YesProp8 so now gays, 1 to 3 percent of the population according to nom's own stats, are destroying democracy and the world... come on.. get a grip..why do you guys hate us so much.. i still don't get that..
My husband is dead. Mahlon Craig McFarlin died in my arms on July 2nd, 2011. I watched the life go out of his eyes that day and the only thing protecting me from being homeless is the fact that he was legally my husband before he died. What two loving people created together over the span of nine years was not destroyed by the fear-worshipping people who falsely label themselves "Christian." There is nothing Christ-like about what you are trying to do. Very Sincerely, John Joseph Koons
@TheatreGrove I could use that same argument to argue for incest marriage, and polygamy. In the state of California gays had ALL the same rights and yet they sued the state of California. Radical gays don't care about rights. They only want to sue those who don't agree with their agenda.
@YesProp8 look we didn't start this war.. we didn't start raising tons of monies and getting ballot initiatives just to deny another group their rights.. don't put this shit on us... if you hate us, cool.. but don't be mad because we're defending ourselves..
@brigantty Defending yourself? The Supreme Court has had to protect the Yes on Prop 8 side along with the police and the FBI because of what you call defending yourself. I don't buy it.
@YesProp8 you don't have to buy shit, it's out there and no matter how condescendingly you try to spin it so that you're the victim. anyone with any reason can see this is an attack on gay people.. we just want the same rights, not special rights, the same rights.... puhlease....
@mormonslovefamilies, You want to vote against equal rights for all so who's really the bully here. And please change your deceitful user name to momonslovefamiliesexclusionsapply.
@MormonsLoveFamilies Your name .. does that include my Mormon Bishop father who had my brothers hold me down while he kicked me in the head until I was nearly unconscious .. because I became a Christian and left the LDS church? YOUR name only works for people who don't know what really goes on behind the scenes in the Mormon Church.
How about we put whether or not to send you back to the cotton fields on a ballot since you are big on putting civil rights up to a vote? And naturally, I do not want to see slavery reimposed, but it's real rich seeing you saying civil rights should be up for a vote.

All these arguments were made in the Prop 8 trial, and couldn't stand up under legal
scrutiny.

One can blame the fall of democracy on the radical gays who only want those who can be bought to make decisions.
