i have a question umm if i back up my data on my ps3 and go to my friends ps3 and restore it will he get the same files as i got under game data utility.
Could someone tell me if I can creat a partition on my PC HDD, format it to FAT32 then remove HDD, place it into a external case and use it to back up my ps3 then when I'm finished return it to my PC without losing anything PC related from the HDD ?
how do i back it up with a media harddrive? it keeps saying 'connect media server to save destination' why is it say that it has been done but its not doing it now?
yo man i accidentally RESTORED my PS3, all data, games, trophies, etc,. were deleted..and i check my free GB and it says i got 293 GB, supposively i should've got 320..how do i back up those data's games trophies and etc,.?
hey guys i need help ! ive got a external 500gb fat32 to backup my ps3 game data . but when it start backing up it said THE BACK UP OPERATION COULD NOT BE FOUND (8002002A) please someone help me
i have an external hardrive but it does mot show up on ps3, it tells me to insert usb or something which i did, its a seagate hardrive if that helps please reply
Guys I need help! When I try to back up my data, right when the screen heits the loading screeen and is trying to estimate how long it will take, it cancells and says it couldn't be done! it doesn't any anything else as to why it failed! I really need to back up my crap so help right would be appreciated! D:
Ok, I want to do this right just so I don't lose any data. So quick question:
Once I've backed all my data on an external hard drive, and keep it plugged in, the data will still be there and if I were to install something it would install on the external hard drive?
OR: Once I've backed it up, I take it out and delete all the data from the PS3, and whenever I need the data on the external hard drive, I have to plug it back in?
@kooliofreezy72 once you've backed up all your data, the original data will still be on the PS3. The only time you need to connect the external hard drive in again is if you want to backup again, or restore your backed-up data in case you lost something or upgraded your hard drive.
I restored my ps3 system and i believe that I lost some data. so when I went to play my game, all the memery was deleted and I had to start over. Any suggestions?
Alright so I am getting a new 320 GB ps3 move bundle and I was wondering what the effects of the backup would have on it. I am going to keep the same PSN so would I still be able to play all my old games with the saved data from my other console?
@KingFatalis158 Make sure you deactivate your console and backup all your content from you old PS3. Restoring the data to the new PS3 will mean not all data will be copied over. In which case, you can use the data transfer utility to copy everything off the PS3 onto the new one. This will allow you to copy everything.
@v2GriiMeZx not sure how the PS3 deals with homebrew software. If you want to get rid of it, best to backup software and then do a firmware restore before restoring it.
is there no way to choose what you want to back up? for instance i just want to get my girlfriend's shitty shows off my ps3 and onto an external hard drive?
@mrsailorbear with videos and music, press TRIANGLE and select 'Copy Multiple' to move multiple files to an external hard drive. Then delete these files from your console. Then when you run backup, these files won't be copied over.
@benny446 No. Your trophies are linked to your PSN account and cannot be transferred to a new one. Trophies are not saved on the console, they are synched online to your PSN account, so be sure to sync your trophies before backing up / restoring your console.
Your saved data is only on the console and not stored on the PSN. Some games do not allow you to transfer savedata between different PSN (or PS3) accounts.
@sweatysniper your trophies and PSN profile (friends, username, PSN wallet) is all saved online. Only the game data (saved data, install data, videos, music etc) are saved on the PS3. Just remember to sync your PS3 with the PSN regularly. It should sync automatically when you try to view your trophies or view your own PSN profile from the friends menu.
@JaredDrakeFenton external hard drives cannot be used to save games. You can only use it for all other media (music, photos, videos etc). Everything else is saved to the PS3, so if you run out of space you should upgrade the internal hard drive first.
QUESTION! My ps3 ran out of space yesterday, so i got anew 2TB external hardrive. I formatted it and the ps3 recognizes it, but if the hdd on the ps3 runs out of space, will it automatically start saving to the external hard drive?
@Mrbest1235 The PS3 doesn't automatically use the external drive. All data is stored to the internal one unless you manually move or copy it to the external drive. In addition, you cannot put games or install data on the external hard drive, it can only be used for photos, music and video content.
My friend has been playing on my PS3 and he wants his save data since he finally got his own. I thought about just backing up my PS3 and restoring the data on his PS3, this should work, right? And that's how I would put the data on his, by restoring? Never done this before and the terms are confusing... Thanks!
@roaddict4life you can back up your data and restore it on another console, but some data will not be transfered. This includes protected saved data (some games do not let you transfer the saved data across to other consoles), games and other copy-protected DLC. Most save data files will work just fine on the other console as long as the same PSN profile is used.
There's one thing that is bothering me. Say that you already formatted your external hard drive to FAT32. Then you plug it in with your USB and all of a sudden, it doesn't show up. I'm so confused about this. Help?
@BigNewt23 Your questions is a little confusing to me. The hard drive must be formatted to FAT32 in order for it to be detected by the PS3. Using NTFS, Linux, Mac partitions won't work on the PS3.
@dynoman60 depending on how much content you have, the backup process can take ages to prepare and then eventually copy the stuff over. It's best to start the backup process before you go to bed, so that its all done when u wake up in the morning.
If i have downloaded content from the playstation store and backup my ps3. then put it on a new internal hdd, wud it still be there? Im going to upgrade my hdd soon but i was just wanting to know, thanks.
ok my ps3 would not load any thing it wouldn't even turn off soooo i had to turn it off manually went to turn it back on it said your system is corrupted.... now restoring i don't know what happened it worked fine the day before then all the sudden it said this what the fuck!
i do all the steps but before i can select my spare hard drive it says "connect storage media at the save destination" what does this mean? my PS3 is a fat 80gig, do i have to connect my new harddrive straight up to the PS3 through USB or do i have to connect it to a different slot other than usb
@m4110y You need to backup your old content onto a different hard drive (not the new drive you want to connect). Then you need to swap out the 80GB for the new one and transfer the content from the backup drive to the new drive.
In summary, you need two hard drives not including the 80GB one.
im upgrading my ps3 and when i try to backup everything onto my external harddrive it says backup could not be completed and a number in parentheses. I think it was 800138 please help!!! i've been having this problem for the last 2 months and i cant seem to find a solution!!!
@MGForgotten You need to try and repair the hard drive first and then try backing up. Search for the PS3 Recovery Menu for instructions on how to repair the disk.
Umm...ok.But is that how you do it?Plus what's the best way to get rid of data cause I have like 4,000mb left out of 74gb.Do other accounts, even if they dont have game data on it,take up so bites?Cause they probably dont make 100gb usb flash drive things.
@raiden08100 you should buy a portable hard drive to backup your data on to. If you have used up 70gb, the backup will be slightly smaller (say around 50-60gb) as game install data isn't backed up, but all user data is backed up.
I've had my PS3 for 2yrs. now and i'm probably gonna get the yellow flash soon.So 1st I have to get flash drive/Usb memory card.I plug in and back up data. Then I have to (After backed up) I plug it in New or other PS3 and then click restore? It transfers all data?Right?Reply please
I'm making a Modern Warfare 2 Challenge Lobby And You Need To Delete The Game Utilitys And Data... So If Back Up My PS3 With My USB Will My Back Be In My USB When I Need It?
If I was to back up my PS3 now as i'm having freezing problems what would I do after it? A restore file system? Rebuild Database? or Restore PS3 System? and after doing the right one of the 3 options will I be able to put the data back on? Please reply asap, thanks.... John
@JpOwningSince1993 I would try doing a Rebuild Database. If that doesn't work then restore the file system and restore your data using the backup utility.
Ok i need help on what to do. My old (60 GB Ps3) Broke. My dad bought me a new (2008 Backwards Compatible 80 GB) How do i get the data that was is on the broken 60GB ps3 to the new 2008 Backwards Compatible 80GB ps3. ***NOTE*** I cant turn on the broken 60GB.... I can only take the hardrive out. ---------I was thinking about getting the old hardrive from the broken 60GB and sticking it in the 2008 Backwards Compatible 80 GB ps3--------- Reply back on what I should do please.
@Universal247 you won't be about to use your old 60gb drive on your new console. if you put it in, you will be asked to format. The only way you can keep your data is to transfer it from your old 60gb console to the 80gb one, but if its broken then you can't do that.
@KHRAIASE005 The backup feature backs up the entire console except for trophies, which are stored on the PSN. You can only restore all the data to the same console.
Ok so I read the few recent comments lol, I have a seagate ext. hdd and I formatted it but my ps3 didn't read it, so I read the comments and I have to format it to FAT32 I think, but I don't know how.
On my computer when I'm gonna format the ext. hdd it says
Capacity: 298 GB
File System: exFAT
Allocation Unit Size: 32 Kilobytes
Is that FAT32? Cause I haven't formatted it this way yet.
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM thanks for that advice and solved. but i encounter another problem, as i done removing the hd and replacing my previous 40gb with the 160gb 5400rpm sata hd, a text came out saying that it couldnt find any ps3 system or press Start+select to find the latest update(ive done this over n over still had the same outcome) then it say's press the PS button to restart the ps3 to refresh(as i done this, the same text came out all over again) duz da new HD need 2 b formted to FAT32 aswel?
@ssanang if the drive isn't formatted, the PS3 would do it for you. If the PS3 fails to find the drive, it means it's incompatible with the PS3. What happens if you pop in the original 40GB drive?
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM well, when i put the original 40GB back everything is fine. it shows nothing out of the ordinary. So that means the drive that i bought isn't compat with my PS3.(sigh) wat a waste of my money. well thanx for everything. il try to exchange the drive with my friends or anyone that have drive that is compatible with my PS3. btw what kind of drive that is compatible to a PS3?
so what type on fileswont it back up? ive got some games and save files on mine will it back them up ? also ive got 2 ps3 slims can i use that for the back up? i wanna upgrade the hard drive but i dont wanna lose my stuff
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM how do you format a hard drive to FAT32? I have a 320 GB Seagate Freeagent Pro that I wish to use to back my PS3 up. Please get back to me.
just buy a new 500G hard drive and a hard drive case for 10 bucks, take the old hard drive out of your PS3, put the new one in, format the new one. put the old one in the 10 dollar case, connect it via usb and run your back up. then do a firmware update via usb flash. your done and you have a external hard drive for whatever you want in the future.
Firmware 2.40 crashed a number of PS3 when it was released. Firmware 2.41 fixed the issue but broken PS3s had to be returned, meaning all data on the console was lost.
Completely incorrect. Trophies are stored on the PSN and only cached on your console. As long as you Sync your trophies you are fine. You cannot back them up to a external device.
hi ppl, im gettin realy pissed with the whole copy-locked data i.e skate 2, nfs prostreet etc. is there a way around this prohibited data so that i can copy them?
Might be possible. Only if you have a Ethernet-to-USB cable. USB goes in the PS3 and the Ethernet cable into your Laptop. You basically have to share the laptop hard drive as a "virtual" drive.
wut kind of USB External Hardrive I should get to bak up my files wit? Im gettin a a new 500gb for my ps3 so I want to knw which USB External Hardrive I should buy that will work well
hey, i have a 160gig western dig hard drive......n it has four partition out of which three are formatd in fat32 and the fourth one is in ntfs. but my ps3 reads only one drive of fat32. Every fat32 has 31gb space, can any1 plz tell me how to format my whole hd in fat32 or any other alternative to increase my memory for that particular drive......i would be grateful.thanks
I was able to save all the wanted items in the save data utility, does that mean all my saved game data will be avalable when I copy it onto another console?
what should i do? my cod4 wont work but every other game will and i dont want to loose my online file and i dont want to loose my saved data but i really want my cod4 to work.

What does backing up do exactly?does it take all your ps3 data, put it on a jump drive, so u can have more space on your ps3?
jjdabaddes 11 months ago
@jjdabaddes backup creates a copy of the data so if anything happens to your PS3 you can restore it. It doesn't free up any space.

I'm making a Modern Warfare 2 Challenge Lobby And You Need To Delete The Game Utilitys And Data... So If Back Up My PS3 With My USB Will My Back Be In My USB When I Need It?
Snip3rGodzClan 1 year ago
If I was to back up my PS3 now as i'm having freezing problems what would I do after it? A restore file system? Rebuild Database? or Restore PS3 System? and after doing the right one of the 3 options will I be able to put the data back on? Please reply asap, thanks.... John
JpOwningSince1993 1 year ago

Universal247 1 year ago
@Universal247 you won't be about to use your old 60gb drive on your new console. if you put it in, you will be asked to format. The only way you can keep your data is to transfer it from your old 60gb console to the 80gb one, but if its broken then you can't do that.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 1 year ago
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM The system (the ps3 itself is broken) the hardrive itself isnt

is a back up neccesary when i want to put a new harddrive in ? I don't have a usb or external harddrive in my house that support that many gig.
powerpats 1 year ago
@powerpats Yes it is. If you don't back up your data and install a new hard drive you will lose all your games and save data.

what if you get an error msg while it is backing up
justicekage 1 year ago
@justicekage If you get a error message, use the recovery menu to fix the file system. I have a video on the recovery menu too.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 1 year ago
does that back up all settings, game data, media, and dlc?
KHRAIASE005 1 year ago
@KHRAIASE005 The backup feature backs up the entire console except for trophies, which are stored on the PSN. You can only restore all the data to the same console.

Ok so I read the few recent comments lol, I have a seagate ext. hdd and I formatted it but my ps3 didn't read it, so I read the comments and I have to format it to FAT32 I think, but I don't know how.
On my computer when I'm gonna format the ext. hdd it says
Capacity: 298 GB
File System: exFAT
Allocation Unit Size: 32 Kilobytes
Is that FAT32? Cause I haven't formatted it this way yet.

my ps3 couldnt read my ex-hard drive. can you help me.
ssanang 1 year ago
@ssanang Make sure it's formatted to FAT32.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 1 year ago
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM thanks for that advice and solved. but i encounter another problem, as i done removing the hd and replacing my previous 40gb with the 160gb 5400rpm sata hd, a text came out saying that it couldnt find any ps3 system or press Start+select to find the latest update(ive done this over n over still had the same outcome) then it say's press the PS button to restart the ps3 to refresh(as i done this, the same text came out all over again) duz da new HD need 2 b formted to FAT32 aswel?
ssanang 1 year ago
@ssanang if the drive isn't formatted, the PS3 would do it for you. If the PS3 fails to find the drive, it means it's incompatible with the PS3. What happens if you pop in the original 40GB drive?
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 1 year ago
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM well, when i put the original 40GB back everything is fine. it shows nothing out of the ordinary. So that means the drive that i bought isn't compat with my PS3.(sigh) wat a waste of my money. well thanx for everything. il try to exchange the drive with my friends or anyone that have drive that is compatible with my PS3. btw what kind of drive that is compatible to a PS3?
ssanang 1 year ago
@ssanang most laptop drives are compatible with the PS3. Did you try formatting the drive on a PC/Mac before putting it into the PS3? It might help.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 1 year ago
@XTREMEPSPDOTCOM no, i havnt done that yet. ok il give it a try.

Can I hook up my PS3 to my MAC Desktop to use as the computer's HDD to hold the back up utility?

@viewer5123 Unfortunately, this is not possible. An external hard drive or flash drive must be used.

No. Update should not corrupt data unless it was from an unreliable source.

just buy a new 500G hard drive and a hard drive case for 10 bucks, take the old hard drive out of your PS3, put the new one in, format the new one. put the old one in the 10 dollar case, connect it via usb and run your back up. then do a firmware update via usb flash. your done and you have a external hard drive for whatever you want in the future.
magman20005 2 years ago
why would you be scared of firmware 2.40?
kc1597 2 years ago
Firmware 2.40 crashed a number of PS3 when it was released. Firmware 2.41 fixed the issue but broken PS3s had to be returned, meaning all data on the console was lost.

Use the recovery menu to fix any corrupted areas on your hard drive, and try backing up again.

can i use a blank bluray disc???
dominican1227 2 years ago
Don't mean to be rude but that's a stupid question. The PS3 doesn't write to Blu-Ray discs.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 2 years ago
the only way to transfer trophys over is to go to the trophy menu and run through them and save each to a drive..."so i'm told"
whatblack2284 2 years ago
Completely incorrect. Trophies are stored on the PSN and only cached on your console. As long as you Sync your trophies you are fine. You cannot back them up to a external device.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 2 years ago
how save trophy??
abdiel92392 2 years ago
You don't need to backup trophy information. It's stored online, not on the PS3.

hi ppl, im gettin realy pissed with the whole copy-locked data i.e skate 2, nfs prostreet etc. is there a way around this prohibited data so that i can copy them?
samr500 2 years ago
Unfortunately not. The developers tend to lock the savedata so people don't use it to unlock trophies easily.
XTREMEPSPDOTCOM 2 years ago
thanks mate

would it be possible to save your stuff in a laptop instead of an external harddrive?
AOD1113 2 years ago
Might be possible. Only if you have a Ethernet-to-USB cable. USB goes in the PS3 and the Ethernet cable into your Laptop. You basically have to share the laptop hard drive as a "virtual" drive.
