  • If you're curious about his gear there's an old article somewhere on the internet where he talks about what he's modified, his pedals, and his cabs (old Traynor 8x10s).

The heads are (were) two Acoustic 450s and a Peavey Festival Series F-800B. All these heads have distortion knobs that are set all the way up. When I saw them recently, it looked like he only uses the Peavey now. These heads are cheap if you can find them.

  • This makes me which I was David Wyn Casey.

  • I've been using my bass pod xt live and come pretty close to getting the right sound, but the original always sounds better

  • You guys should check out The Strzebonsky Noizescene. They have a similar distorted bass sound with hard pounding drums that will blow your brains out.

  • can't. fuckin'. wait.

  • with the bass come goose bumps to those who experienced the magic of london 5/5

  • I use a jazz bass, guitar overdrive pedal, light compression, and a tube preamp to get this sound. Don't forget a pick! I think an octaver would do wonders on it too, but I have yet to try.

  • how to create a typical DFA1979 Song:

    1) Take a blurred bass-guitar

    2) take a plec

    3) experimenting with the guitar some riffs

  • I actually have pretty good success with the DFA tone by plugging my bass into my brother's old 15 watt guitar amp, then cranking the gain all the way up in overdrive. It isn't exact, but it's pretty close and a fun sound on it's own.

  • @Ravemecaptain That's cos its a 15 watt guitar amp, the distortion you hear isn't coming from the amp, its the speaker clipping itself hundreds of times because the magnet that was designed for a guitar can't handle the low frequencies of the bass. Eventually the speaker is going to kill itself. good thing its only a shitty 15 watt amp.

  • WERE LOOKING FOR WIVES SO TIRED OF SLUTS COMING TO US IN CLUBS WITH THEIR COCAINE

  • 19 people dont saw the fucking rickenbaker

  • 0:34

  • the bass sounds inmense and the drums... meh. Like trash cans

  • the bass sounds inmanse and the drums... meh. Like trash cans

  • I'M SEEING THEM IN LONDON

  • @TheTomWIlliams HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY? I PAID 70, BUT I WOULD HAVE PAID 700

  • @TheTomWIlliams

    when are they playing?

  • @TheTomWIlliams 0.o i thought they broke up

  • wow, if someone can't tell a bass from a guitar, visually, sonically, or stylistically, they deserve some death from above.

  • COME TO NY

  • @swingAE86 They will be at Camp Bisco X in upstate NY this July.

  • From the ashes, Death From Above 1979 return.

  • @crobs10 they have risen...

  • La cocainaa no es buena para su salud. La cocainaa is no gooood for yoou!

  • the drums sound like shit!

  • It's a 4 String Rickenbacker Bass? OMFG!

  • you JUST CANT listen on youtube and know what its like to ba at a DFA show. that bass is fucking intense!!!!!!!! I fucking love these guys, are they back or are they just doing one show at Coachella?? any1 know>>>?

  • @numbchucking I want to know too cause I'm about to do whatever it takes to go if it's the only show.

  • @numbchucking Check the website. Blog post from the band, and they've announced a show in Austria also. They're back. PHO REEEAL

  • they are back.

  • Sounds like he's using a bit of chorus aswell. Might be the recording though.

  • Looking at the comments it appears 90% of us viewers are simply bassist masturbating over Jesse's tone

  • @achickensandwich Girls Against Boys and DFA1979 revolutionized conceptual bass playing. Many a joke are made about just cutting out the bass, these bands went almost entirely the other way on that one. I appreciate it so much.

  • @halifuckinfan I dunno if it's a revolution - DFA is sort of Stoner Rock riffage meets Disco groove. But it certainly took a man such as this to epic-ly nail the fuck out of it and blow a few peoples minds.

  • @achickensandwich To fill so much space sonically with the bass in a non slap and pop mannor blows me away.

  • @achickensandwich Stoner rock riffage meets disco groove meets hardcore punk. Yeah?

  • @achickensandwich you make that sound like it's a bad thing ;) a lot of their grooves are deep and sexy enough to consider baby making music, though the title "dead womb" might be a bit of a turn off :P

  • @achickensandwich you sir are correct

  • @achickensandwich What else is there to do over his tone?

  • rickenbacker 4001 with 2 traynor cabs wired with PA speakers...a wah pedal, a Ibanez synth bass pedal...and im pretty sure he messed with the pick ups to get the distortion on his 4001, but on his gibson G3 or whatever model it was, he uses an Ibanez distortion pedal...plus it runs through his korg or moog synth so the sound is even beefy-er

  • I swear to god, at 1:11 and 1:15 it sounds like a fucking jungle cat coming out of that bass.

  • can anyone suggest some bands similar to this?

    it's so fucking good

  • @nerflung The Carps. Their also from toronto and use bass/drum. Search "Compton To Scarboro"

  • @nerflung And So I Watch You From Afar.. (not that similar but fuckin awesome and you will like them ;)

  • Fuck yes.

  • Post wave

  • This video is A-mazing. Sounds terrific for live footage

  • Saw these guys at the El Mocambo in Toronto about a year before this, back when they were just Death From Above. Best show I've ever seen. They hit the stage like a bomb going off and didn't take the foot off the pedal for the entire set.

  • epic video

    5 thumbs up

  • epic performance anyhaw lol

  • What kind of guitar is that? I play bass but I'm thinking of switching to the electric guitar and I want one like that.

  • @Donnieosmond its a rickenbacker bass, you troll

  • @Donnieosmond LOL

  • @Donnieosmond lol thats hilarious

  • are you guys seriously retarted? its a 4 string rickenbacker bass with distortion wow you people dont know your instruments

  • the only reason i watch this video is cuz of the white ric

  • @angelscrush same, i want one :(

  • watch as he rapes the ric with a pick what a disgrace

  • @bassmaster0425 you are a tard.

  • @goronstyle you can't even take the time to spell retard? I'm sorry he cant play bass with his fingers. He should be playing a squire or an esp if he wants to use a pick not destroy the pick guard and a $3000 dollar bass that has a two year waiting list.

  • @bassmaster0425 Hey man, I'm taking my 3rd year in the jazz program in university, I have a '78 fender jazz bass, and a '73 Rickenbacker 4001. They are basses, and as a bass player you have to accept that, you can't go around saying shit like that.

My rick cost me 1200 bucks CANADIAN. Its amazing what you can find. I play my rick like that sometimes...it's his money, he can do whatever the fuck he wants with it...fucking idiot.

  • @ianonfire first off im talking new ric ass hole i dont care about you little program or bullshit of the such im saying personal preference, fingers. most skill, fingers. yes it is his money but play the instruments on your level dont fucking rape a beautiful work of art and as an american i can say what ever i want, and when did i ever say they weren't basses??

  • @bassmaster0425 I was referring the basses as instruments in general. They are art, but with out someone,it's just a bass. Are you are one of those people who will just stand in front of an instrument, dumbstruck by the look of it, and then wont use it as it should be used? Ricks were made to be played on. Basses were made to be played on. I have personally held Jesses bass. Its is in amazing condition, but WAIT I see something that is a dealbraker as a buyer of instruments a DIRTY PICKGUARD!

  • @ianonfire on a bass that expensive if i was buying a used one it would be a deal breaker all im saying is with a pick u risk damaging it and i agree 100% they are for playing but i believe a bass is better played with your fingers rather than a pick

  • @bassmaster0425 You can't get that sound on my rick unless you realy attack with your fingers. The sound you get on any guitar, when played with a pick sounds completely different than with fingers. So he wouldn't be able to play this without his intensity and his playability with a pick. Plus it doesn't feel right playing a rick with your fingers...it's just... not natural.

  • @ianonfire if u have a thick enough calis or u use the back of ur finger with the nail u can get that same sound and what kind of amp do you play out of and i love playing a ric with my fingers i mean look at how cliff burton did it or geddy lee it just seems right when u feel it but thats personal preference thats all but i do have to say for a pick the intro is very well writtem but the vocals i can live without

  • @bassmaster0425 See now you're just telling me different things you don't like about this video, just don't watch it if it disturbs you so much. And I am using either an SWR 350 head, with 4x10 cab, or an ampeg like the one JFK uses. I'm sure it's not my equipment. Play it like you said to play it. I've been playing bass for 15 years, i'm sure my calluses are tough enough to play hard enough, but you wont be able to get the sound of a pick with your fingers. Not saying its impossible.

  • @bassmaster0425 you can't have a name like bassmaster if you're disregarding the use of plectrums it's another technique like slapping and playing with your fingers none of them require more skill than any others the skill is in using them right like imagine a death from above song with slap bass it just wouldn't work to get the really heavy tone jesse has he's rewired it and his amps and he feels that how he has it works best with their songs it's his choice his money and his band

  • @bassmaster0425 Sometimes when dealing with full on narrow minded wastes of good people oxygen who think they know best and think their word is testament, in this case, you, I use slang words that come across as a spelling mistake to the ignorant, again in this case, you.

  • @goronstyle Wow did you take the whole month to write that? its not being narrow minded its a matter of preference and knowing the style and technique and its place in music there are many pick using bassist that have more skill than most ex. Justin Chancellor of Tool the ignorant individual is you to to the fact you obviously think that this is my only musical horizon and the fact that i never called it a spelling mistake but insulted your laziness for not taking the time to spell out the word

  • @bassmaster0425 you know what. i dont care. lets just have a drink n be happy

  • @goronstyle agreed, a toast: To all music brand or breed, be it picked or plucked, screamed sung or rapped, music is music and it keeps the art alive for years to come, it will never die and always prosper, let us drink for bands and music to come for styles may come and go but the heart will live for ever!

  • trash

  • great song, great band

fuck mstrcrft give me dfa or give me death

btw anybody saying thats a guitar with bass strings is tool clearly its a bass and the idea of some one taking a guitar rewiring it, giving it new pick ups and changing the pegs is ridiculous b/c it still would sound shitty compared to actual bass

as for the overdrive i cant really tell, considering dfa rarely uses strings that arnt overdriven its quite likely theres no peddles but dfa is an effect oriented band so there is also

  • Fucking in love with taht intro

  • That's weird it's a guitar with heavy strings and only 4 of them. I've never heard of that before..

  • @TheblankofDeath

    thats a bass guitar dude

  • @TheblankofDeath what in the world are you smoking bro?

  • @TheblankofDeath

    SUCCESSFUL TROLL IS SUCCESSFUL!

  • @TheblankofDeath

Well you've never seen a bass, congrats!

  • @TheblankofDeath BASS GUITAR. Look it up.

  • @TheblankofDeath

omffgg, I can't belive the complete lack of sarcasem people have!!!

Is it not obvious this guy was joking people?? :P:P:P

  • @TheblankofDeath lol, i dont think this guy was serious.

  • Best 2:49 of my life every time I watch it. Thanks so much for posting.

  • This band seems very intresting to me as bassist, though I'm not sure if I could pull off the whole Lemmy chordal bass thing, but this guy does it really good.

  • lookin for husbands so tired of testosterone jacked pricks creepin on us in da club. errr, well, what the hell else was I supposed to expect at the club?

  • we're lookin for wives so tired of sluts come up to us in clubs with their cocaine

  • It's not guitar, its Rickenbacker and Ric itself has pretty much distortion and when you combine it with thick distortion pedal and amp, you get that sound.

Man, some people are just so fucking stupid.

  • @HellOnHeaven theres no distortion pedal, the distortion comes from a solid state amp with the drive up. if you see its a peddle its a cry baby wah. and it is a guitar... a bass guitar.

  • @mercuriusfm

Yes, i wasn't sure was it pedal or just a state amp but i agree with you.

  • yeah, and it was taken by perhaps the best band ever to have existed

  • patev4 you have got to be the dumbest person in the world, for one thing dfa is know for just being bass and drums...and saying youre in a band with a friend who has a 4 string guitar? either his guitar has two empty spots or hes also dumb enough to not know he owns a bass, i want to kill you

  • i agree, that guy is a fucking idiot. he calls everyone on here retards when he's quite CLEARLy wrong lol

  • haha... good point mate.... I want to kill the cunt too!

  • HAHA MAN!! shut up you yo yo's I've seen them over a dozen times, its a BASS and drums. THey were known for having an insanely rocking full sound with only two members.

  • I got into these guys right after they broke up, and once I found out about that break-up, I haven't been happy ever since.

  • Wrong....retard. It's a Rickenbacker, looks like a 4003FL. And that is a shit ton of effects he has on it namely distortion.

  • *facepalm*

  • Double post, my bad.

  • Fuckin retard it is a bass guitar with distortion

  • weird bro, clearly it has four strings. But whatever...

  • yer, its called a bass.

mate, it is clearly a bass with very thick distortion.

lsiten to the sound properly if you still don't believe EVERYONE here

  • What the fuck. I should punch you in the face with my foot fist.

  • @PATEv4 Oh wow..... Dude shut up.

  • *facepalm*

  • Actually, it's a bass with a PA which is feedbacking (Is that even a word? lol)

  • you better be trolling or learn to count. there are only four tuning pegs on that headstock because it's a 4 string bass not a 6+ string guitar.

It's really easy to get feedback on a bass if the amp is loud enough. I got it on a cheapy fender squire by turning the tiny amp all the way up and getting the bass right next to it. Hummed to a crescendo and i stopped it before the speaker blew out.

  • @matoro1989 hes not using a bass amp, its just normal 8x10 AP speakers. He is using 2 bass heads though.

  • @chipthetormentor I didn't say what kind of amp he was using. I don't know much about amp types, I was just telling PATEv4 that it's a bass, not a guitar, whatever the amplification system is.

  • @matoro1989 fuzz no more needs saying

  • @matoro1989

distorted basses are something that is dangerous to your amp unless you know what your doing or in JFK's case amps which will produce that sound naturally

  • @tom5677 you mean the feedback? yeah, i was young and stupid, but as soon as it sounded like too much i dampened the strings and turned down the volume. Now I'm trying to learn to play again, and learning how to use my crybaby bass wah. ^...^ I played with other instruments for the first time is about 5 years today. I totally sucked, but I'ma keep at it.

  • @matoro1989

ive discovered the closest i can get to JFK's tone is using my big muff wth my morley wah slightly pushed down (not so much its too wahhy but not so little the tone is filtered)

  • @tom5677 sweet, ima need to see if any of my bass playing friends have some of that stuff.

  • @matoro1989

it works well the big muff is great on basses i only payed around £50-60 for mine and the distortion on it is amazing with the mix of seymour duncans

  • @tom5677 Interesting... I just use an old, pretty brutal distortion pedal (Boss Heavy Metal or some shit) and a shitty chorus pedal (to get the feedback to dance around like that). I hated the big muff on its own, maybe the wah makes a difference.

  • @achickensandwich

it generally filters the fuzz so its good to have it half pressed

i was wondering what the boss metal pedal sounds like though (i use a boss ds2 for my guitar)

  • No it isn't.

  • @PATEv4 wow...

  • Comment removed

  • @DuBSTePPiN92 go fuck off you fucking retarded cunt, moron, utter dipshit. die cunty bloody fagget. you know shit off music epic fail!

  • @PATEv4 achike manko

  • @DuBSTePPiN92

You can play guitar through a bass amp no problems at all. I do it all the time. However you CAN NOT play bass through a guitar amp that will blow some stuff lol try it sometime its fun

  • Man I miss DFA, they uised to come to London Ontario A LOT and play at Call the Office, I was there for every show. Then the last time I saw them was with NIN and QOTSA in Toronto right before they broke up. it was weird to see them play at a big venue. I miss these guys

  • @numbchucking yeah man

i hate it when i just become old enough to start going to shows and then all these bands that i would love to go to , that i have liked for years, are broken up, dead or the closest tour stop near me is a plane ticket away.

    fml

  • sick, sick, sick

  • white stripes

  • Yeah, that's the very interesting thing about them, only drums & bass ( synths too sometimes).

  • work of a genius

  • it's called distortion

  • awesome vid! thanks for uploading it.

has anyone heard of a Scottish band called The Fire and I ? they are great, too!

  • I wish everyone in the crowd would move like JFK :D

  • Comment removed

  • what bass is he playing? it looks real nice :P

  • look's like a rickenbacker...

not sure what though.. i think rickenbacker 4003. don't count on that though.

  • Ive looked at a rickenbacker and a picture of jfk. In one pic i seen a faint Rickenbacker on the head, plus the head shape is the same.

  • @themagicnaza yeah, it really is a ruckenbacker 4003!

  • @themagicnaza Yeah, it's a 4003, but apparently from what I've heard it's a custom one...

  • @themagicnaza It's probably a late 70's or early 80's 4001

  • @Cover95

    white Rickenbacker 4001

  • rickenbaker

  • i think i am blocking you for your relentless stupidity. sorry brah.

  • who the fuck cares... listen to the damn song

  • Since I filmed this, I have to let you know that: YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Filmed at Empty Bottle in Chicago with audio from an external camera mic.

  • theres a delay, dumbfuck.

  • Comment removed

  • Is he playing bass throung a guitar amp? PHAT sound

  • This sounds so much better than the EP version. I love the intro on this one.

  • yea man these guys are waaay better live

  • its only one sample untrust got it from these badasses

  • The with this song and Untrust Us is interesting.

Was it just a joke between the two bands or some kind of sick coincidence.

  • what happened to these guys?! i loved the funky, sexy beats and his singing is so awesome.

  • you don't prefer a live version of it?

  • It's a bass, because guitars don't fucking sound like this and anyone who can master a bass like this man is a genious.
