It's funny to me that people don't realize she left him in this song. Marries someone else and he is supportive only becuase he loved her so much. Im sorry but.. this doesn't exist. In real life the man that was SO IN LOVE AND NOT COUNTING THE COST would have been a) an asshole or B) heartbroken and an ass hole.

Bullshit. I've done it twice. Not only that but one I drove 8 hours one way for the wedding. The other I was in the wedding party.
Sometimes you need to look at the person, yourself and the relationship and realize you CAN'T offer that person what they really want and need.
"I walked away and let you have your space." Yes I did. Why, because she was confused. She loved another man, her X.

@Ashbug031 not true. my ex and i were together for 4 1/2 years. i still love him very much and he left me to be with my best friend. and im with someone new as well. and we are both happy for each other. cuz thats what being in love is about. wanting what makes the other happiest and what is best for them over what you yourself want.

@Ashbug031 i wouldn't necessarily agree with you because its about loving a person so much that you would do anything for them that means letting them be with someone else if it makes them happy. Unfortunately not many know of that kind of love, and too often that love is spurned but people like will just keep going on, just so they can see them smile

@Ashbug031 I would normally agree with what this guy is saying. He's basically saying this song is fantasy, in that guys like that don't exist. I would love that to be the truth, would make it a bit easier to not be so 'fantastic', if you would, being that selfless.However.. I know a guy that did just this. He was engaged to a girl, but then she met someone else and apparently there was 'a spark', and she asked if he was willing to let her go. It took him a week to come to it, but he agreed.

@EtheralRejects No, it wasn't me, and yea he's still torn up about it. His basic reasoning was "I could have asked her to stay, and she probably would have.. but I'd have always known I was her cage; not her lover." he said. I've spent more than a few nights with him when he does nothing but drink and cry. I really wish I could help the guy.. I suppose time will do it, but time sure could work faster, it's hard to just pat him on the back and tell him he did good.

Either gender can be the jerk. In this song, the lady strung him along when she never really loved him in the first place & that is SO wrong. It's sad to see unconditional love rejected. . . i was put into a situation where i had to decide to possibly give up the girl of my dreams just to make her happy tonight...hopefully there's hope we will be together but its a risk i had to take for her...it took everything to not be selfish...i really understand what this song means now... its weird that possibly giving up the girl of your dreams could actually make you happy just by knowing it made her happy...i still have faith that we can be together still though :)
