Absoultely beautiful! Even Al Martino can't beat this! I'be been in love with Ames and this song since it was released when I was a teenager. He's not a bad actor too. He played "Mingo" in the Danial Boone TV series along with Fess Parker. BTW..."My Cup Runneth Over" by Ames is also just as stirring as this song!
@diagreen VERY !!! Just before you posted your comment, we saw him perform in Palm Desert CA on Feb 10th. Still amazing at age 83, sang for about an hour backed by the Gene Krupa Tribute Band. He sang My Cup Runeth Over & signed the 1967 album by that title for me afterwards !!! As mentioned on other Ames videos, he is a very gracious man toward his fans. I'm 54 & appeared to be the youngest at the concert. :(
Just listened 6 times over - this arrangement is sheer perfection !!!
@chkjns REALLY???still performing at 83???i didnt even check other vids to see.i just assumed he retired by now.with KRUPA TO?Watching his performaces from 2007 its kind of strange.its like his voice hasn't aged at all.i new he sang the impossible dream but i didn't no he sang mary in the morning.i get out to palm desert sometimes.im gonna try and see him myself.thanx for the info.i love utube man.PIECE.
@diagreen He lives on his ranch in Utah. I was psyched finding the pristine 1967 album after JUST finding his music on youtube. 'Just for fun' I searced the words: Ed Ames concert calendar. Up popped the McCallum Theater's promo for his appearance there coming up in 11 days, just 4 hours from my home in PHX. Shocked the HECK out of me! God is good !!!! Krupa Tribute Band is musicians who played with Krupa, Goodman & Harry James - a group of ancient gentlemen with all their chops STILL. Heroes!
@2rjswan I can choose, it's THIS version, hands down! Ed's got a passion and intensity, a resonance not found in the other, PLUS, he's doing a duet with the oboe here in this incredible Perry Botkin arrangement. Al's version is nice, this is stupendous. The modulation at 2:16 is MAGIC ! ! ! Come stop by my musical time machine of a channel! chuck
Does anybody remember a radio program hosted by Jim Amici (Don Amici's, the actor's, brother). I was a young girl but I always remembered this song that he opened (or closed) his program with for his wife, Mary. Not sure if it was Ed Ames or somebody else that covered it.
And so did every other great singer also sing a grand version of this song of that unforgettable era namely Al, Glen et al. What is being produced today is crap.
What a truly lovely song...and the vastly talented Ed Ames does his usual superb job with it. What a magnificent voice he has. And the 60's TV show "Daniel Boone" showed he's a good actor too. MANY thanks for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! May you & yours have your HAPPIEST holiday season ever! :)
@JubalCalif I've only rarely seen reruns of Danl Boone, never linked his name as being the singer, thanks for the connect. We're the same age! Glad to see I'm not the only oddball loving this mellow stuff. The beautiful orchestra comes from the brilliant Perry Botkin, Jr who was the KING of this orchestral style back at this time! He arranged pop for kids & this for their folks, just amazing! There should be lots for you to like in my 550 playlists for 350 artists & every yr since 1900! Chuck
You're FAR from an being an "oddball", Chuck! You're obviously not only an intelligent & articulate fellow, but your taste in music is just plain exquisite! The fantastic music at your channel is TOTALLY awesome! My kind of stuff, that's for sure! Your playlists are wonderfully electic & satisfying to the soul. Please keep up the good work, sir....may ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year!!! :-)
@JubalCalif Thanks for all the compliments & your subscription to my music hall of fame! I always think of songs like this as the singer performing a duet with the orchestra. There's magic in every phrase here, Perry Botkin should be a legend. The countermelody here alternates between oboe & strings, glad I had just enough music education to be able to recognize and appreciate this. Listen again, and focus on the countermelody, it's amazing ! ! ! chuck
I had the honor and privilege to meet Ed Ames three times - once backstage at the Ed Sullivan show and once backstage in Las Vegas. He was so nice - he even stopped to speak to my parents. A true gentleman who happens to have a fabulous voice and still does even at his age. God bless you Ed.
Ed is an amzing and wonderful singer. Daniel Boone was a great show and The Ames Brothers were wonderful. Clearly, anything Ed touched had class and quality.
A forgotten classic by the best, in my opinion, power baritone ever, his "my Cup Runneth Over" is one I still do and have since I began singing 40 years ago...keep on....justasinger54
I am a 62 year old man ... I have been in war ... I am a professional ... I am strong and courageous ... I have lived in many places in many countries ... I have done just about everything there is to do ... I don't cry often ... as soon as this song started my eyes got wet ... then a teardrop fell ... what a precious and meaningful song.
Just of the best voices ever..RWB

Love this song. Prefer Elvis' version the best though. If you've never heard it by Elvis you should. His phrasing was superior to anyone. TCB!
