It's a shame that the film didn't have more scenes like this that presented strong emotions for the characters to deal with. Having Kirk's emotional shock lead into his physical disorientation in the Enterprise corridors really brought home what an enormous gamble he was taking by reassuming command of the ship.
if you can get hold of the book it gives a very graphic and unpleasant account of the whole scene. 'a writhing skeletal mass, pumping organs on the outside of their bodies'etc. nasty! scared me shitless!
Personally, I think that it's most likely that when Sonak and the unnamed crew member were beamed back to Earth, their molecular patterns were completely lost in the datastream, and they disintegrated. Which is fortunate because, even if they had been beamed back in one piece, they still would have died due to the damage to their cellular structure.
I reckon they included this scene in the first movie, to satisfy the curiosity of all those trekkies who probably posed such questions at Star Trek conventions, however, what if an insect had strayed into the transporter beam like in 'The Fly'
This scene always blows my mind, serious nightmare fuel. I don't blame McCoy in the slightest for freaking out about beaming up later on in the movie. He probably saw the bodies :(
Or another good visual depiction (excuse my jumping films and genre's here but...) can be seen in the Japanese anime film "Akira". Near the end of the film, what happens to the body of the character of Tetsuo is almost beyond imagining. It's a good thing it's animated or it would just be to gross to watch.
They probably rematerialized as two (or worse-one) inside out, screaming, palpitating mass of twisted flesh and organs. I imagine something like the horrific mess of creatures depicted in John Carpenter's The Thing. But not for long, fortunately.
I really REALLY wanted to see what they looked like when they got them back on the other side!! Creeped me the hell out, but you never got to see what happened to them! To this day I still wonder what they looked like!
@GeneralHoohah I can only guess that (by the screams) their vocal cords were still intact enough to make sounds, and their nervous systems were still intact enough for them to feel... not good.
But yeah, this is easily in the top ten of the most disturbing things Ive ever seen in the movies.
@skrat5 Yeah, just look closely and watch the shape of her face and head, I mean the woman on he right! Imagine what it must have looked like what was rematerialized at the starbase, what they said about that "it didn't live long... fortunaltely." Shudder! I can undeerstand people like Lt. Barkley, who was so afraid of getting beamed.
the transporter has always given me the creeps! but why the hell were they using the damn thing when they knew it was faulty?! "the main transport censor wasn't functioning , NO BACKUP" said decker!
Great pierce of music. And very fraking fitting to the scene.
btw the novelisation of ST:TMP (by Gene Roddenberry himself) reveals that the other person who got killed with Sonak in this scene was Vce Admiral Lori Ciana.
@FekLeyrTarg I remember some unknown scene of another transporter accident and they found the victims in a hallway, merged toghether with the floor. Dont know if it was a comic, movie or an episode - so if anyone knows: PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
@FekLeyrTarg yes, thats been it, checked the episode at youbute. always thought it was a transporter malfunction. btw, the uss-pegasus incident, i think there may have been crewmen who were also merged toghegher with the rock of that asteroid, huh? all this is not exactly transporter-caused, but kind of the same gruesome death imho. poor transporter crew that had to clean up the remains in star trek 1 movie. thinking about that scene in "gallaxy quest".

So like what seemed to have really happened to to them both? Especially with having them shrink just before having them materializining?
Xwingpilot 1 year ago
@Xwingpilot Oh, the shrinking? I guess the damaged tissue structure was too weak and partially collapsed into itself.

@FekLeyrTarg were they stuck in the floor to the hips?

Inside the bulkhead.
But there's the TNG episode 4x25 "In Theory" in which some crewmembers get stuck inside the floor because of a darkmatter nebula.
