And again, dogs don't distinguish between a grill and a wall, they aren't stupid animals, they know things can't get at them through a cage. You should also be putting your cage in the smallest, warmest room in your house,eg a utility room
If my dog couldnt get into his cage for some reason and it wanted to sleep it would find the most confined place it could to lie down, normally between all the chair legs under the table
Just because you don't think it looks "nice" doesnt mean an animal doesnt
Yeah, except we don't have the same needs, we certainly don't have the same wants. Lots of humans like chocolate, try feeding it to your dog as a "treat" and you'll kill it.
Humans have an extremely low tolerance to temperature change due to the size of our brains, what we find uncomfortable, most animals wont even notice. If you are having to put clothes on your pet due to the climate you live in you shouldn't own that animal where you live.
@2244number I don't think they did... Most people don't. If you look on the exotic pet community forums, you'll be more able to understand. Its also why pet chimpanzees eat people's faces off and all that good stuff, because they see their pet as a human and don't understand its behavior or needs. Even research though, is not good enough. My mother did a ton of research before getting a wolfdog, and well, bad things still happened, but it wasn't the wolfdogs fault, just my moms.
Little guy looks like he's got some defensive posturing going on, but he's probably just grumpy, since he didn't shred that dude's finger. He obviously knows the handler and isn't afraid, probably just a bit moody.
thinkin of gettin one are they tame as a breed dog i dont see any harm since its really a dog and tons of cats and dogs are saved from the wild and breed from pups
@vinngrizzle No they are not a tame breed of dog, they are a wild animal. It actually isn't a dog, dog is canis familiaris, fennec foxes are vulpes zerda. They aren't even of the same genus, they wouldn't even be able to breed, that is how far apart the two are. But, they still do make good pets, if you know how to care for them and what their behaviors are.
Lots of dogs (and I assume foxes) will choose to sleep in a cage if you provide one for them. It's not to shut them in (I doubt it even has a door, mine doesn't) it's about providing them with somewhere they feel safe enough to sleep.
If you don't provide them with an area like this they will most likely choose the most cage like area in your house to sleep. In a corner, under a table, behind sofas. They naturally feel safest when they are closed in.
@ringosis So why not just one of those small plastic dog houses? They are ALOT more homey than a metal cage. This cage seems to open for me. No privacy for the fox. It really wouldn't cost all that much to buy it somehting decent.
That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with plastic or even wooden kennels, if you prefer the aesthetic, but don't kid yourself that it's making your dog happier, you are buying it for yourself not your pet.
Also, the dog doesn't want privacy, it wants protection. It doesn't care that the walls aren't solid, just that there are walls. You need to stop thinking your pet is a little human. You are one step away from buying it little clothes...and that really is cruel.
@ringosis Um, no, they do care if it has walls. In the wild they have dens, they are not transparent and you can only see out of them from the opening, like a dog house, which is why dog houses have walls. Cages are like sleeping at night without a blanket, you feel exposed (and also cold...) and that is why you can't sleep. They need a safe place where they can be hidden. In a way thinking of your pet as a little human isn't as impractical as it sounds, because we both have the same needs
We created clothes for warmth. Putting clothing on your dog is not cruel, the dog isn't suffering, its only your mentality that is. Dogs like Chihuahuas need sweaters in the winter, are you implying they should go out without one and freeze? Sled dogs need booties in the winter or some will have their paws bleed, so would you want them to go on in pain and bleed, possibly even loose their paws? Is that not cruel?
You generally shouldn't provide your dog with anything plastic that it might chew. You need to stop anthropomorphising animals. Dogs don't distinguish small plastic boxes in the shape of a little house as "more homey" and in a lot of cases they would become uncomfortably hot, would be less hygienic, and potentially toxic.
What a dog finds homey is an enclosed space not too much bigger than itself with a soft floor. It couldn't care less what it's made of or what shape it is.
THIS IS NOT A DOG. Unless you are an expert on foxes, don't judge It's behavior. If this was a dog it would be easy to assume he wasn't happy. Considering it didn't draw blood or hardly move, it's obviously fine. If you watch other videos on YouTube, their attitude is similar but not the same as a regular pet. Don't attack the poster for something you don't know about...
I'm not gonna be an ass about this but it doesn't look like it wants to play. I'm not saying you aren't a good trainer or anything. But I think you should try to find out if it's playing or not. Cause to me it just looks annoyed.
well it's not the noise it's the way it' ears are. If never seen an animal being happy with the ears put back. That's kind of to protection, isn't it so at the moment, it's kinda stressed.

To the person who thinks they can only live in a desert. You are wrong. There is a fennec fox living wild in south Florida in a forest fit the past 4 years. I'm sure it is a fennec as I own one myself.
well do you want an animal that plays with you? you know, i have a cat. my brother sometimes plays with it like in the video, while i dont. and my brother gets bitten very often, while i dont.
Although it looks as though he's extremely peed-off, I have two chinchillas and their way of showing affection is nibbling on youre nose, my female will sit and nibble my knuckles all day not actually breaking the skin or hurting but its their way of registering you as a member of the pack. Foxes are the same playfullness developes bonds and boundaries between each-other, its a social interaction more so than aggression. If it was aggression that guy would have a finger left.
My German Shepards did this as well. When you petted them they would try and grab your wrists or hands. It freaked visitors out but definitely wasn't aggressive, they would never apply any more pressure than you would if you were shaking someone's hand.
If they didn't want to be petted they would get up and leave. The pawing and chewing was playful.
@cumgullet88 Um, chinchillas are rodents. Fennec foxes are canids. Completely different behaviors. It is indeed pissed off, because canids will put their ears back when submitting. He has his ears back showing submission but was biting to try and stop her/him, him/her having a finger left means nothing, it merely means the fox did not want to hurt him/her.
Dogs who have not been conditioned to grooming will bite the handler, but just because they haven't drawn blood doesn't mean they don't find the experience negative. Further attempts to groom the dog without making the negative experience positive, will only result in more turmoil when it comes to grooming, especially if you only make the experience even more negative.
@cumgullet88 Also, PACK? LOL. Chinchillas travel in GROUPS, not PACKS. Rodents do not know what pack hierarchy is... The grooming is merely a nurturing behavior, rodents like to clean themselves and their family, which is what your chinchilla sees you as, family, not alpha. When a chinchilla is acting dominant or having dominance issues, it will bite, mount, spray urine, etc.
Really, Robeyta I love your fennecs, they are so cute and lively and I hope you take good care.
I won't try to explain again all that thing about foxes playful habits... The guys who say something like that are just helpless idiots. Freeding tamed Fennec lead it to a certain death. Wild Fennec cannot live with humans cause they're affraid of us and tamed cannot be fred until some survey training. And they live in the desert, they cannot survive on forest or somewhere else.
Its not like they are taken from the wild Fennec foxe's that are sold as pet's are breed in captivity and raised by human's from birth. Are they more wild than a domesticated dog/cat? Of course they are they havent been selectivley breed for hundreds of years
But captive breed fennec's would not survive if they where dumped in the wild, so everyone who say's its cruel to keep these as pet's are complete moron's it would be equally cruel to release a animal thats reliant on humans into the wild
its a fennec fox. your practically saying all dogs should be in the wild. all cats should be in the wild, all fish should be in the wild, not in a lonely cage, not in a loney cat castle, not in a lonely fish bowl.

im not 1 of those stupid youtubers =.= and maybe its 2 scared to act in the way of growling loudly and hissing.... it is cornered..... if some giant had you in a cage wouldn't you be 2 terrified 2 stand up 2 it and defend yourself? probably.... but i bet you would still cry and whine just like the fox is doing.....
U seem to forget that this fox has probably been in the care of this person since it was a kit (yes real term for a baby fox) if it truly was scared it would of attacked the hand unmercifully and torn it to shreds. They are also very agile probably more so than cats so it can easily out maneuver a human even in a cage like that and is would not be afraid to bite. Considering this, tell me how that fox looks scared?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
happy? you think the little thing is happy? how do you know, did you asked it? and? did it said yes? unbelivable gow selfish you are to keep a litte wild animal like that in you rhome just because their cute, those thing belong into the wild not in your house, and besides when you say ''as they where raised by humans they can't go back to the wild'' thats true but as long as people wants to keep them as a pet, they won't stop breeeding them.. so frommy point of vieuw your just a sellfish basterd
Seriously, how do you keep them occupied? I heard they are quite active animals... And how do you work around the digging issue? I mean that compulsive digging they seem to be subject to...
You people are all idiots. This fennec is playing with Robeyta; its signs of anger and affection are not the same as cats and dogs because they AREN'T CATS OR DOGS. It's not annoyed or mad, the growling noise is a common sound among foxes. If you read, this fennec isn't kept in this cage. It lives a longer, a hppier life than in the wild and is always warm, safe, and loved, and fed, which are all very unlikely things in the desert where it comes from, where it often is hawk and other bird food.
he makes the same sounds my papillion makes when he is half asleep and playing with me like that, when I pull away he always gets up and hap-hazardly walks over to me to continue playing
I don't get why all those people say this fennec fox is all pissed off and stuff like that. If it was why isn't he biting very hard and why isn't he ripping off the humans finger? It's just playing. God damnit. People who think the owner is bad is just really weird or it doesn't look good enough. He is playing and giving attention and the fennec just does what a fennec does when if it is happy.
Anyway, very good looking fennec and really cute noises! It's beautiful <3
The short growl thats barely audible is actually an unhappy sound they make when they feel threatened. Another video titled "Pissy Fennec" displays this same sound from a wild fennec but louder. The one titled "Earl morning madness with Scout" is happy sounds. This one is not extremely mad, just annoyed.
They do eat live animals, and some will feed them live mice as treats to provide some added stimulation. As omnivores, they eat a wide variety of stuff, and too much of the same thing can be both unnutritional and boring. Their diet in the wild consists mainly of berries and insects, as well as many other food sources whenever they can reach them.
If the fennec in this video actually wanted to bite with the intent to injure or dissuade, the man in this video would be BLEEDING. He's not. Fennec teeth are very sharp.
Nibbling and biting gently are shows of affection for fennecs, much like parakeeps and other birds which often nip to show affection.
Fennecs are not dogs, okay? Their body language and noises are different. Just because they look "pissed off" to you doesn't mean they ARE. This is a happy, playful, well adjusted fennec fox.
Humans can often misread animal body language and noises because they are NOT THE SAME as humans, or indeed other animals we're familiar with. The "fear" face on a chimpanzee looks like a human _smile_. Learn more about them before you judge.
I had a doberman like that. He acts protective around my uncles kids aswell as me because we love him. I used to be around circus animals on a daily business. Especially this baby anaconda. It would slide up my arm and rest around my neck. Peaple would scream worried about me because I was half its size. That's why I know that the peaple leaving stupid comments about how this animal is angry at be penned up are mental.
If ANY of you haters knew ANYTHING about wild-breed canids, you'd know that dominance plays a key role. That is a submissive play gesture, and the fox is making contended sounds. Also, keeping a fennec in a roomy, clean cage with access to food and water is actually safer than having it roam around and get into things. Animals raised around humans find the huamn to be a surrogate parent, and a "pack" member. Do your research, n00bs! xD
My physics teacher had a pet dog who definitely had the "pack" mentality. She would piddle herself when he came home because he was the 'Alpha Male' and she was so happy to see him. In turn she treated his wife 'Alpha Female' with aloofness.
If you read elsewhere, this owner doesn't close the cages or seal the fennec foxes in, it's just there for a bed area. And also, don't talk about animals you know nothing about. That's how they sound and act when happy and playing.

It look like that little guy is either weak or tired by ripping your finger off. If you want, feed him some whatever food chunks he like. But instead of bringing it to him, let him come to you if he's hungry. Show him at a far distance. he'll come to you
Take note foxes aren't expressive like cats and dogs. They dont pin their ears when scared or angry and those growly sounds are common of foxes. Its is playing. If it was pissed off, poor robeyta would be missing a finger. </3
I like his ears.

It's closer to a love bite. Fennecs nip to show affection and they bite gently during play.
Jetman123 2 years ago
i think she was telling you to piss off
Sabzi10 2 years ago
No! that is how they play... When there happy they bite!
I know is sounds strange, but I had one and they do that!
Also they yelp when eating something good! :)
NETTMEDIA 2 years ago 3
It's just play-bites, like a cat pawing at your finger. That little whining noise is also their happy nose, it's equivalent to a cat purring.
He may look a little POed to the average observer, but it's really just that he's tiredly playing a bit before he goes to bed.

If it was aggression that guy would have a finger left.
cumgullet88 2 years ago 35
@cumgullet88
My German Shepards did this as well. When you petted them they would try and grab your wrists or hands. It freaked visitors out but definitely wasn't aggressive, they would never apply any more pressure than you would if you were shaking someone's hand.
If they didn't want to be petted they would get up and leave. The pawing and chewing was playful.
ringosis 8 months ago
@cumgullet88 Um, chinchillas are rodents. Fennec foxes are canids. Completely different behaviors. It is indeed pissed off, because canids will put their ears back when submitting. He has his ears back showing submission but was biting to try and stop her/him, him/her having a finger left means nothing, it merely means the fox did not want to hurt him/her.
ItsWolfeh 3 months ago
Dogs who have not been conditioned to grooming will bite the handler, but just because they haven't drawn blood doesn't mean they don't find the experience negative. Further attempts to groom the dog without making the negative experience positive, will only result in more turmoil when it comes to grooming, especially if you only make the experience even more negative.
ItsWolfeh 3 months ago

And they live in the desert, they cannot survive on forest or somewhere else.

leohadyourmum 2 years ago
Its not like they are taken from the wild Fennec foxe's that are sold as pet's are breed in captivity and raised by human's from birth. Are they more wild than a domesticated dog/cat? Of course they are they havent been selectivley breed for hundreds of years
But captive breed fennec's would not survive if they where dumped in the wild, so everyone who say's its cruel to keep these as pet's are complete moron's it would be equally cruel to release a animal thats reliant on humans into the wild

im not 1 of those stupid youtubers =.= and maybe its 2 scared to act in the way of growling loudly and hissing.... it is cornered..... if some giant had you in a cage wouldn't you be 2 terrified 2 stand up 2 it and defend yourself? probably.... but i bet you would still cry and whine just like the fox is doing.....
MrBlueSora 2 years ago
U seem to forget that this fox has probably been in the care of this person since it was a kit (yes real term for a baby fox) if it truly was scared it would of attacked the hand unmercifully and torn it to shreds. They are also very agile probably more so than cats so it can easily out maneuver a human even in a cage like that and is would not be afraid to bite. Considering this, tell me how that fox looks scared?
migetX 2 years ago
Animals dont think like that...... Fight or flight, it would try to run or try to bite.

It's beautiful <3

generalaone 2 years ago
The short growl thats barely audible is actually an unhappy sound they make when they feel threatened. Another video titled "Pissy Fennec" displays this same sound from a wild fennec but louder. The one titled "Earl morning madness with Scout" is happy sounds. This one is not extremely mad, just annoyed.
MalevolentLyset 2 years ago
do people feed them live animals or do they eat dog food or something similar?
tettra 2 years ago
They do eat live animals, and some will feed them live mice as treats to provide some added stimulation. As omnivores, they eat a wide variety of stuff, and too much of the same thing can be both unnutritional and boring. Their diet in the wild consists mainly of berries and insects, as well as many other food sources whenever they can reach them.
Jetman123 2 years ago
it doesnt look pissed off at all :S i really want one.
utubemusic12 2 years ago
I think he may just be sleepy. He wants to play but is kinda too tired to put his heart into it all the way. :P
Jetman123 2 years ago 2
If the fennec in this video actually wanted to bite with the intent to injure or dissuade, the man in this video would be BLEEDING. He's not. Fennec teeth are very sharp.
Nibbling and biting gently are shows of affection for fennecs, much like parakeeps and other birds which often nip to show affection.

MonkeyPieshaha 2 years ago

Do your research, n00bs! xD
crystalsubaru123 3 years ago 11
@ crystalsubaru123
