Well... I beg to differ... A believe an M3 is also MUCH heavier then a Subaru, and only with rear wheel drive, where as the Subaru has AWD. I personally think a 98 Subaru will eat a new M3. My brother has a 98 impreza turbo and he has won a few street races with M3's.

Well, Boxer engines are very short and low to the ground so you can stick them longitudinally mounted on a symmetrical awd system to get a lightweight and strong awd system without adding too much weight and maintaining a low center of gravity.

They are durable too but not the best 4cyl config for max power.

Power-wise they might even be inferior to I-4 configurations because they are sitting on the side, aren't as well-balanced and require less than perfect exhaust piping to get packaged n

I'd have to disagree with what you said about Boxers as they do not sit on their 'side'. They literally a 'flat' engine with the pistons/cylinders horizontally opposed. They are also many times more balanced than an I-4. This makes them great for TQ & HP but it doesn't make them ideal for high revs.

Not mine. My GT only makes it to 6500rpm max before the limiter kicks in & even if it didn't, revving my EJ25D to 8400rpm would be murder & way beyond it's efficiency range. Now if we're talking about an EJ20 turbo, then I can see 8500rpm happening with ease.

There are plenty of factors. Maybe the dude in the M3 gave up. A US stock sti will definitely by any means smoke an E46 M3. An M3 will pull up top on a stock M3 with equal drivers. If your boy came across a dude who sucked at driving he could have smoked him but it's not the norm. I've had my subaru coming up on 10 years. Longer then anyone here probably even know what an Impreza was.
