Serious question, where is the governor that maintains engine rpm that he speaks of. Is it some sort of lock on the collective that just holds it in place or what. On turbine powered helos is it a sliding throttle like most jet aircraft? I have flown a piper Cherokee before in the company of a pilot and learned a good bit about airplane operation. Would also like to have the controls of a helicopter down too just in case I was ever in one and the pilot had a heart attack or something.
@shizzle5150 The Governor is activated using a toggle switch in the end of the collective, it is electrical and simply keeps the engine RPM in the green arc on the tacho. They also have a correlator which is a mechanical device which changes the throttle as you move the collective, if you turn off the governor you have to adjust the throttle manually, but you usually have to turn it the wrong way as the correlator will over correct, which could take the RPM out of the green.
The power (rpm) control of the engine with the grip on the pitch only works for reciprocating engines. A turbine engine would use a different system to increase power...as far as i know. But the Robinsons use reciprocating engines so in this case its right. So stealing a Venom would probably go wrong for you vibey1992 if you try to take off fucking around on the Throttle.
@jinksdemon dosent pay to well in the begining i was told that why i not doin it but i 37 if i was younger iwould what a job dont think i could ever get bored flying a chopper
excuse me but if you try to lift up a hellicopter just by using only the coective next second your tai will spin and you ll be dead ! colective sightly up / rudder control / yoke control,, thats the sequense
im left handed. all the videos i see the pilot is using his right hand for the cyclic. and his left hand usis the collective. is the collective only in the middle or is it on the left side of each seat. if so i would sit on the left seat and use the collective with my right hand in the middle of the 2 seats. am i right? or is it unsafe for the both of us to use the same collective? or is there only one collective all together?
@FlightLevelHeaded i write with my left hand but i am so lucky that i do all other things with my right hand like punching an asshole in the face , handle the pc mouse...
I had no trouble. Well technically I'm mainly right handed, I just write with my left hand. Everything else like scissors, Piano/Keyboard. I'm also stronger on my right hand. Really strange.
The controls are duplicated for each seat " if dual controls are fitted" So the collective is always operated with the left hand regardless of where you sit. In general helicopters are flown from the right seat, but some the Schweizer for example are flown from the left.
Does anybody know anything about how to fly a V-22 Osprey? that is the aircraft i want to fly when i become a marine. Which it is different from a "normal" helicopter because it has 2 tilt rotors. if anyone knows i would be very appreciative if you helped me.
Why are some helicopter's nose blunt while others are more pointy. Doesn't helicopter also have form aerodynamic drag. Or is it somewhat compromised by the down-wash from the blades and the momentum of the craft? any experts on this issue.
the reason of the sound is that the engines accually have baffles or mufflers and your hearing the rotor going by the exhaust chopping through the air
Modern helicopters have fuselages designed to minimize aerodynamic drag wherever possible. Whether the nose looks "blunt" or "pointy" is largely a matter of styling esthetics. And military choppers are generally designed for functionality, not looks.
Question: (real life) what % of throttle is normaly used when flying helicopters? (Simulation) I ask cus I fly them in Flight simulator at 100% throttle all the time. I'm not trying to compare real life to the simulation i'm just curious.
I think it would be 100%. Or at least it would be constant, since throttle is only needed to keep the blades spinning, they will do the rest (keep it up/floating)
Nope, definitely not 100% you use a mix of throttle and blade pitch to adjust the altitude....more pitch = more throttle pitch creates lift...it also makes it harder to turn the rotors. I believe most helicopters now have it set up where if you add more pitch by raising the collective the engine will compensate by providing more torque.
You're confusing the throttle with the governor. A governor manipulates the throttle to maintain rotor RPM. More collective means more throttle required. 100% refers to the governor setting, which provides 100% rotor RPM.
That looks easier than it is. Flying a helicopter doesn't mean just pull up the pitch (or collective) and move the stick (cyclic). So I bet you can't even fly the helicopter 2 seconds. ;) And why do you want to know how to start up the aircraft? As I said, you couldn't fly (as non-pilot).
The video clip is excellent and the need to fully understand how things work is vital in either helicopters or stock markets. Disasters occur when people meddle without due care and attention. Michael Stephen Nolan Dublin - Eire
That's what i call the summary. Thanks so much!

We control the speed of the rotors using the throttle, or by changing the pitch of the rotor. At least that's the basic way.
